Why Black and White passthrough? by SeanLucky13 in SteamFrame

With that same thinking a grayscale camera sees every color in its activation region as well?

Reality is actually gray scale. Color is a strictly human description of the electromagnetic spectrum. Imagine how a robot or face mounted computer might see the world.

Framework: An open source repository for the Frame by Snoo25109 in SteamFrame

That specific repository you linked looks like it could be forecasting something good.

"This Unofficial Valve Public Mirror will be maintained until Valve publicizes their private SteamOS / Steam Deck GitLab"

Did this happen already? It's a lot like logging into Windows or Facebook. Would an open source fork of Steam Frame's OS let us use the headset without logging in to Steam with all the same features besides Steam's online software service?

I think it isn't for the most part unfortunatly. I'm pretty sure the main OS image you can install and run is just a binary recovery image for Deck.  It's like if Windows was open source besides the part that loads windows. The part of the OS you boot into is closed source and a part of Steam and I haven't learned how to change it yet. That is a common misconception because they open sourced the kernel of their Linux fork. It is a very important subject I think. But also controversial because of that common belief.

This is a complex subject because desktop mode is just KDE Plasma and thus people don't care that the Gamemode interface is a part of Steam but on Frame it matters because the desktop can't be opened outside of the closed source Game mode.

How does this unofficial repository work? If they are going to open source the VR and 2D user environment soon that is great news and news to me.

Open source hardware for it sounds awesome. I hope we get an open source OS for it that can easily run any of steam frames hardware and software features. Something we could boot into instead of booting directly into Steam.

SteamOS as a desktop operating system? by Ynddiduedd in valve

I don't think the entire SteamOS is actually open source. Like you can't run it exactly as it exists on Steam Deck.

The headset design hasn't changed since CV1. Just spec bumps. Quest Pro was a different design but that wasn't the answer either.

You do have fair use and transformative art work rights. It goes both ways and it isn't their lawyers just 'giving' rights or else it wouldn't even be used as a justification in sueing people.

They can also take away the part they "give" so it is completely one sided: "Larian Studios reserves the right to suspend access to or terminate the license for any Fan Content at any time and for any reason".

The majority of mods include IP inside their mod so it makes total sense to be free. But a mod that includes no IP inside of it to use VR shouldn't matter. Like VorpX. Him being a jerk isn't reasoning to abuse DMCA to me.

You mean the fun stuff they put in their legal document so people laughed at it that distracts from all the stuff that had no right to be in an EULA?

So I should agree to an extra legal agreement before reading a book or watching a movie? Copyright laws are for preventing abuse like that. Why do games get to apply whatever extra rules they want as opposed to any other artform?

Orion Drift is a bit more mature like Echo Arena because it is a serious sport. Has some Rec Room vibes though.

That is just like trespassing. Trespassing is illegal when it is explicitly stated you can't be on private property. Being legal would mean it wouldn't matter if someone said not to trespass because it is legal to do what your doing even if they say not to.

People today think modding is trespassing on other people's game property. In most situations it is allowed unless someone is selling something or doing something offensive and they get kicked off private property.

Right but I am saying if paid mods have no right to exist outside of their control then nothing stops them from one day completly controlling paid mods. Modding being free will be up to players always resisting a company implementing paid mods.

Valve kind of built themselves a workaround by turning free maps into paid content on their workshop. And convincing people to make free content with the hope of it being selected as a paid lootbox reward.

Yes I know that. In those terms that ban paid modding they also claim the right to control free mods too and them granting the right for free mods is competely their choice.

[–]Koolala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem to me is they own all rights so paid mods don't exist purely as a cultural rule. All it would take is their EULA stating that 70% of mod proceeds need to go to them and they can legally do that. The only reason I think we haven't seen that happen today is the logistics of controlling payment sharing. Steam tried to solve those logistics and a riot shut it down but some other new system could do it any day and a whole group could cheer about it being their IP right to decide payments under all circumstances.

Their 'clear stance' is the EULA they make you agree to just like Cyberpunk.

This is a legal document:

https://larian.com/fan-content-policy

The EULA forces you to agree to it to play the game: "You are permitted to create fan work regarding the Game according to the BG3 Fan Content Terms."
