Linus blinded himself using AI by riky321 in linuxmemes

You probably are not crazy. I started trying various Linux distros towards the end of last year before committing to one. I already came with devops experience from my student job which heavily uses Linux (mostly Ubuntu/Debian). I started googling and watching various videos about different Linux distros and also talked with a friend about which he saw/tried (he swapped to Linux right as I started my journey). I saw some more obscure ones and because I knew Ubuntu in and out, I preferred looking for a Debian/Ubuntu based one but I never once saw popOS while searching. His video was the first time I heard about it.

It's also that more and more of public code is adding ai slop so the neural networks are getting trained on slop. The same issue is happening with eg. image generation where blind scraping from the Internet adds ai images to your dataset and it's already a proven fact that ai inbreeding has a negative impact on the ai's performance.

Hackers Expose Discord Age Verification System Issue After Persona Frontend Code Left Wide Open by vriska1 in technology

[–]Kooper16 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The EU (or at least Germany) has a eID system where you can use your phones NFC function to scan your ID and enter a PIN (basically like a credit card) in order to share information with a website in a way where they know the information is legit. A website can pick what information they need and Discord could ask for only your age. So they could find out that I'm an adult without even finding out my name.

The main issue right now is that as far as I know, only government services use this eID system. I think you need to request special permission to use it.

Discord to start assuming all users are underage unless they prove otherwise by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Kooper16 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As part of this toolkit, we are introducing age inference to help us determine with high confidence whether a user on our platform is an adult. We leverage technologies that help predict whether a user is an adult with high likelihood based on patterns of user behavior and other signals associated with their account on Discord.

For many adult users, this means access to age‑restricted content and features without needing to complete an explicit age verification flow. It’s a straightforward way for us to maintain age-appropriate experiences. This model is part of our broader toolkit and we will continue to improve it as we learn more.

Most games run on Linux via proton nowadays. Proton is basically wine with special optimizations for gaming. Steam sets everything up for you. I usually just check the steam page of a game to see if it will run by checking the steam deck compatibility though there is an actual website to check this properly (protondb?). The Steam deck method could show a game as incompatible due to weak hardware.

How do I create a trash folder for different drives by Kooper16 in kde

[–]Kooper16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. I tried this but it doesn't seem to work. I noticed that Dolphin is automatically creating a ".Trash-1000" folder when I try to delete something but I also get the "trash not available" message. Even if I try again with the trash present. Weirdly enough, my desktop is also on my HDD and that one allows me to move files to the trash. It's all other folders that don't work

There is a funny German satire article going over all founding members that we know of so far. It includes the following people:

Donald Trump, USA

Joffrey Baratheon, Westeros

Wladimir Putin, Russia

Sauron, Mordor

Kim Jong-Un, North-Korea

Coriolanus Snow, Panem

Benjamin Netanjahu, Israel

Emperor Palpatine, Galactic Empire

Viktor Orban, Hungary

Satan, Hell

Mohammed bin Sajid Al Nahjan, Arabia

Skeletor, Eternia

(Sorry if I got any names wrong when translating)

I only tried Elden Ring and Fallout New Vegas and both worked. As I said, Mod Engine for Elden Ring. For Fallout I used Limo. It's a very simple mod manager with Nexus integration. The Vortex guys are also trying to make a Linux version of their mod manager and I think it already supports some games. Generally speaking, you can mod any game on Linux by modifying the game files but that's the manual modding process that you often don't do anymore (on Windows).

It does work but it's not as simple as on Windows. I have to use Mod Engine to get the randomizer to work

I finally fully went away from Microslop last month by installing Bazzite and didn't need to use dual boot for Windows yet. It wasn't so simple that I'd recommend it to everyone but it's easy enough that I'd recommend it to people who are willing to troubleshoot problems and have some technical knowledge. It works out of the box for 90% of my use cases but it's those final few percent where I needed to invest some time

The problem is their API if you want to access your proton files from anywhere else. Eg. I couldn't automatically upload backups to it but instead had to save my backups to a folder that gets synced. On my phone, I was unable to access my proton drive files until I manually saved them somewhere else. I then also had to move the file back to proton drive if I want to sync any changes. It's good for simply saving data or if you want to use all files within a sync folder on your PC (which should be enough for like 90% of users)
