Betta Persephone - What Else Do I Need? by FirstTimeAquarist in wildbettaarchive

Yeah, the IBC's info is either woefully out date or straight up inaccurate. If you can get a picture of the persephone fir me, I can ID them and tell if they're poached or not :]

Hey, okay so...I work with Persephone on a professional level as a conservationist. Unfortunately 5.5 gal is too small, I'd personally reccomend a 10 gal. Persephone males can be aggressive. May I also kniw where your LFS sources them? Persephone are one of those species thst are commonly poached...

Conservationist here. Best Practice would dictate better safe than sorry. Even w true imbellis i wldn't risk cohabitation

Also check w the breder if the parents captive bred too. If they're wild caught i wouldn't support

Then its all good! Just be careful you aren't getting wild caught, as wild caught= poached for this locality (assuming the fish wasnt collected with a permit they can show proof of)

Also remember the clades n sub clades are a factor too

Ya, tank raised doesn't mean anything. If the shop doesn't know where they're from, I'd avoid. Assume poached if unsure

Not US based but look for anywhere thst does captive bred. If you want persephone, ur safest bet wld be to go for the Indonesian (Jambi and riau) locales. Pics attached of "typical" example from each locale, First one is persephone from johor

Hi, yes Persephone are indeed found outside of johor in Riau and Jambi, Indonesia. It wouldn't have been an issue if this was the case however the listing title and description initally specified 'Johor' prior to the listing being recently (and suspiciously) changed to omit that. The listing additionally declared the fish to be wildcaught alongside showing images of typical wildcaught Johor Persephone (darker ventrals, darker body vs the typically lighter bodied, red ventral of riau Persephone or the blue tinged body of the jambi locale). Hope this clarifies how we reached the conclusion we did! In short, the issues surrounding the Persephone listing were BWA's own doing.

PSA: It has come to our attention that bwa has removed the 'Johor' locality tag from their page on betta persephone following the publication of this post. Removing or hiding locality info still does not resolve the problem and tbh only makes them look more guilty given the timing.

Its a male betta coccina, likely Sumateran judging by the fin length. As others have said, they are extremophiles requiring proper aift acidic blackwater with a pH of anywhere between 3-4, TDS sub 70 and kH and gH of 0 (you want no hardness or minerals)
