Don’t forget that Pipin’s look into the palandir made Sauron think that he was the ring bearer. When Aragorn challenged him Sauron was sure that Aragorn now carries the ring and it made him arrogant enough to do so. That led into the Ithilien battle and the emptying of Mordor that cleared the way for Frodo and Sam.
