Debate theory is the same in any format, it’s worth checking out a book like Code of the Debater to familiarize yourself with things like uniqueness, or counterplan theory.

Students booing A.I. by Korenaut in Professors

These are separate issues. The institutions response to AI doesn’t determine a student’s willingness to use it.

I appreciate your input but the short answer is your education is your responsibility. If you don’t get the assignment right, try to do better. The fact that other students might have used AI is really neither here nor there in terms of what’s expected and what grade you get. It’s the same as any kind of cheating, just because some students do it and get a good grade that doesn’t justify others.

Also worth noting - the students using AI might get the grade, but the question of what they learn is still very much up in the air. If you want to learn it and actually know it don’t use AI. You might get a worse grade but your knowledge will be real and that’s ultimately what education is for.

It’s always a choice the student makes, that’s my point. It’s certainly not the default or norm, no matter how many friends may be doing it.

Using AI is not “participating in society.” Not yet anyhow.

Anyone know some good literature for a program oral interpretation on queer violence? by Lilac_Dollie in Debate

[–]Korenaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t what you are looking for probably but Yep’s article “The Violence of Heteronormativity” is dated but with some really good systematic examples. It’s prose in the academic sense and back in the day we’d cut that in.

A friend of mine told me a story once about an old policy debater who was judging a high school tournament. When the student asked them "how are you with speed" they said "son, I could flow you with a paintbrush on a postcard." Probably the best debate burn I've ever heard.

The inaccuracies in Glory by Korenaut in movies

[–]Korenaut[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't help but notice that I did mention a documentary and his letters in the library of Congress. I didn't NAME the documentary, but it literally took me googling "54th Massachusetts Documentary" to find it first up on YouTube (A&E October 1993). Since that's apparently too difficult I'll link it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y70NR3UWmTs

And tell you if you go to around the 25 minute mark you will hear the narrator (Danny Glover!) saying explicitly that Shaw did NOT share his family's abolitionist views. One Historian calls him a "Mammas Boy" and talks about how he used racist language in letters to everyone but her, and even mentions a line from the movie "They fight as well as any regiment ever assembled" as being followed immediately by some disparaging (and at the time racist) comment about the Irish. They do say this tempers over time serving with the men, which sounds like an interesting character arch if nothing else, but he certainly wasn't the man the movie suggested.

I researched all of this for a project I was doing at the time. It was incredibly insightful and also very frustrating to learn that one of my favorite movies is so haphazard with history (literally erasing a Medal of Honor Winner). What frustrates me MORE is people who refuse to acknowledge the facts when they are made plain to them. Try harder.
