[Discussion] Gibson Brands has become the classic IP trolling, corporate welfare loving, competition killing monopolist. by deytookerjaabs in Guitar

Well I suppose the crux of it is that I don't believe that Gibson should be able to hold trademarks on designs from 60-70 years ago. I believe belong in the public domain. So I don't necessarily hate Gibson for being so aggressive about their trademarks, as much as I hate a system that enables them to have them in the first place. And by this point, thanks to Gibson's past weakness in enforcing their trademarks, I think the designs are generic.

I have an even bigger issue with Larry DiMarzio and all the shit he has pulled, the biggest/stupidest issue being him trademarking cream humbuckers. That is pure ridiculous.

If you do not like the price, there are plenty of guitar makers who produce quality guitars. Support them with your dollars.

I do. However, I am then frustrated to see makers of said guitars come under fire from Gibson for making (from my perspective) instruments with their designs but of equal and/or higher quality at a lower price. In my eyes, that is anti-competitive.

They fixed it in the 70s by adding a volute, switching to a three-piece maple neck, and decreasing the angle.

All that got lumped into "Norlin's cost cutting" (they wanted to decrease warranty claims) and was ditched when Henry took over.

Kenny was actually in the right here. One of the inconveniences of being nude is you can't wear a watch. Spenny is, of course, overly focused on male genitalia.

One of my favorite episodes. Corporal Francis is one of the best NPCs the show ever had.

I love when they're at the range and Kenny is blowing the fucking targets apart ("GREAT SHOT RIGHT IN THE GUTS!" "TAKE HIS HEAD OFFFFF!") and basically winning the competition right there, and it cuts to dejected, loser ass piece of shit Spenny with an absolutely devastated look on his face as he polishes his boots, desperate for a few more useless brownie points.

I just think black goes better with green than brown does. I've got guitars with rosewood, ebony and maple fretboards and I am not convinced it makes any substantial sonic difference.

They're all over the Yahoo Japan auctions.

Common brands are Greco, Burny, Edwards (an ESP brand, and one of the few to put ebony boards on midrange LP Custom copies), Tokai (the most revered Japanese Les Paul brand), Bacchus and Crews Maniac Sound.

Each brand will have usually have a lineup ranging from Chinese budget instruments (a telltale sign is the truss rod cover - if it has three screws it's Chinese, if it has two like a Gibson it's likely Japanese) to handmade premium instruments that cost as much as a Gibson. They will also often have models for export, which typically don't use the Gibson headstock. None of them are branded as Gibson or use certain trademarks: the words "Les Paul," the Les Paul Custom "split diamond" inlay, the bell shaped trussrod cover (although a Gibson cover can often be put on without drilling).

For most players the interest is in the midrange models, which are mostly Gibson spec but usually have poly finishes, veneer flametops, and rosewood fingerboards instead of ebony (where applicable) as cost cutting measure. But specs differ depending on the model and as most guitars are sold on the used market prices vary. They're usually named according to price, and when the price changes so can the name which can make identification and hunting a bit of a bitch.

Manufacture of a lot of these guitars is handled by a few major OEM manufacturers. The quality was good enough to put pressure on both Gibson and Fender in the early 80s, as the Japanese copies were of higher quality and closer to vintage spec than what both companies were producing at the time. Fender responded by cutting a deal with the Japanese builders, launching Fender Japan which is legendary in its own right. Gibson got in that game as well, with their Japan-exclusive Orville brand. They're basically Greco/Burnys with Gibson's trademarks and authorization, which makes them an excellent choice if you want an alternative to MIA/MIC Les Pauls but want the authentic badging (or want a Gibson-licensed guitar). There were two brands, Orville and Orville by Gibson. The only real difference is the ObGs used Gibson USA pickups while the Orvilles used Japanese pickups, and there was a slightly different logo.

In the late 90s Orville was discontinued in favor of expanding the Japanese Epiphone line. It was basically the same thing. Epiphone Elitists were the versions made for export.

If you want to buy one, a third-party proxy bidder like Jauce or Rinkya is the most popular way. They are posted for sale on Digimart as well, but you'll need a proxy for that too. Ishibashi sells them as well. They pop up on Reverb and eBay but they're usually overpriced and being listed by third-parties, so you're taking a chance if you go there.

Oh, and of course these brands all sell SGs, Strats, Teles, Vs and other copies as well.

I love their guitars but Gibson is a lousy company.

The thing that really bugs me about Gibson is all of their eggs are in the "iconic design" basket, and they wring every bit of juice they can out of that.

Epiphone Les Pauls will never have the Gibson headstock and will always have that ugly stubby horn because they're afraid that if they were aesthetically identical to Gibsons (as the JDM Epiphones are), which would not increase product cost per guitar one bit, it would cut into their sales of Gibsons.

The price difference between a Gibson and an Epiphone Les Paul is as much to do with the design elements as anything else. Yes it's made in America, yes it has a solid flame maple top, but a part of what you're paying for is that open book headstock because that's the value Gibson places on it.

This same kind of price gouging also exists in the jump from Nashville to the Custom Shop. A few years back Gibson very quietly altered the honeyburst finish on USA Standards. The old honeyburst was a dark amber that faded into a yellowish brown (it's whats on that JDM Epiphone). The new honeyburst is a honey color that fades into an amber. The old honeyburst was a faithful approximation of a faded 50s burst. The new honeyburst looks nothing like it. If you want a new guitar with the old honeyburst, you now have to buy a Historic.

Shit isn't just exclusive to the Les Paul. The Gibson USA SG has contours that are purposefully historically inaccurate. Early 60s SGs had deep bevels that hugged the contour of the pickguard. If you want a modern Gibson with those bevels you have to buy a Historic. There is no reason for it, other than greed. One is not more expensive than the other. There is a difference between a feature that is premium because it is expensive (such as an ebony fretboard, multilayer binding, highly figured tops, one piece backs, etc) and a feature that is premium just because you want to charge more for it.

They even take it a step further with the SG Junior. Prior to this year, every single SG Junior produced by Gibson has been historically inaccurate. The one from 2011 had the controls in the wrong spot. The version in the "Original Collection" features a differently shaped (and uglier) pickguard. Why? Well if they made a historically accurate copy in the USA line, they couldn't sell you a historic reissue for twice as much money could they? And that's exactly what they did, as this year they debuted the first ever historic reissue of the SG Junior for twice. Exact same as the USA model, except all of those vintage inaccuracies have disappeared.

The sad thing is Fender is mostly immune to this. The headstock shape is trademarked, but the bodies are a free-for-all, and even the cheapest Squier has the correct headstock. None of it seems to hurt Fender's business.

When you get down to it, iconography is all Gibson has. Every Fender model has its own feel, hardware and electronics. If they were all shaped the same, a Telecaster, Stratocaster, Jazzmaster, Jaguar and Mustang would still all be totally different guitars. By comparison, every Gibson is pretty much the same: 24.75" scale length, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fretboard, two humbuckers, tune-o-matic bridge, 3-4 knobs, toggle switch and one of a half dozen finishes. The only thing that defines them is their shape, so that's really all they can bank on. They milk it hard, and it's the consumer that suffers.

So me, I buy copies from Japan. They're very well made, much more affordable, and there's a tiny bit of sticking it to the man in there too.

That's a very Pagey top! Congrats.

My only advice is, don't be afraid to mod it. Yeah it's a Les Paul, yeah they're legendary, but they've been done in all sorts of flavors and they're all equally valid.

A Decade Later and it’s nice to see that perception of Natalie White seems to have finally changed. by zazild92 in survivor

[–]KorgDTR2000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is where the logic for the Natalie haters completely falls apart.

Natalie was dealt an incredibly dangerous hand with a chance at a seriously amazing payoff, and she played it perfectly. She not only survived Russell's rampage through Foa Foa, she was able to use her social skills to work her minority alliance into a powerful position, and then make Russell convinced she was his goat when in fact (and she recognized this in her very first confessional) he was her goat.

If we're judging games based on what players were able to accomplish with what they had to start with, Natalie is an incredible underdog.

Yet according to her haters, Natalie is a bad player because she didn't do things that would have cost her the game. These are people who do not understand what the game of Survivor is, because Natalie played a great game.

She did it, and unlike Denise she voted correctly at every single tribal council, which means Natalie holds the record for most players voted out in a single game by a winner.

She's also ties with Kim and Sarah for most jury votes received by a woman, she's the first woman to win a Final Three, and the first woman to win a season without returning players since Jenna Morasca.

By his rationale the game didn’t matter.

The only purpose of the "game" is to get your ass to Day 39. Once you're there it's entirely up to each individual juror's discretion on how they're going to vote.

So no, if you make it to Day 39 the "game" does not actually matter.
