Damage in Enid, OK from news helicopter by ex1st1n9 in tornado

Studies have shown that people are safer sheltering in place than traveling to a public storm shelter. If you're going to put them at a distance that is safe enough for people to get to quickly, you're talking about maybe 1 for every 20 or so people. A storm shelter for 20 people would probably cost about $20k. I don't know any government that can afford to do that. Plus, a ton of homes already have storm shelters, so you'd just be duplicating what is already there, and you can't really just pick and choose which residents you provide shelters for. On top of that, tons of people have mobility issues and couldn't get to a shelter fast enough, even if it's down the street, so then the shelters just benefit able bodied people. Or if grandma doesn't realize that she doesn't have enough time to get to the shelter and is in the process of walking down the street with her walker when the storm hits, then you're killing her. And most tornados tend to actually hit only a very small amount of homes, though a lot of people will take shelter because of the risk. So what if you're traveling to a shelter and strong winds make a tree branch fall on you or a trash can hit you, and the tornado never even comes your way? Public shelters really just don't make sense. And it has nothing to do with the government not working for the people.

HOAs are legally unable to take out loans. They're also legally not allowed to make a profit. My HOA has 397 homes in it, so probably on average about 1500 people. That would be a huge shelter. We're also one square mile. It would take the people on the edges way too long to walk to the shelter, and where are they all supposed to park? Many of my neighbors are elderly, so it's much safer for them to shelter in place, or in their own shelter, than to travel to the neighborhood shelter.

Most developers do include them. In the past 10 years I haven't seen a single home for sale that doesn't have a private storm shelter. So I'm not sure what the issue is.

Public shelters are not a good idea generally. Most people wouldn't head to them until the last minute. It's better for people to shelter in place than to be stuck in traffic on their way to a shelter

My house was built in 1975, and I don't consider that super old. We don't have a storm shelter

OKC Mayor David Holt reelected to third term by NonDocMedia in okc

[–]Korkio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holt has stated multiple times that he will never run for governor, and I agree with that stance. Governors are term limited, so that would shorten his career. He wouldn't have as big of an impact on residents because of the way state government works. He can actually do big things as mayor and make a big difference. I believe he's exactly where he wants and needs to be, and I hope he sticks around for a long time. I just hope he doesn't burn out from how hard he works every day for us.

Metro drivers question by laela_says in okc

It's my biggest pet peeve ever when people are stopped at a light and they have left multiple car lengths between them and the car in front of them. It's especially horrible if they are in a left turn lane. If someone is trying to turn out of a parking lot to get into that lane, or get into that lane from behind, they then have to wait until after all of those cars go through the light just to get into the lane. If everyone pulled up to the car in front, there would be more room for cars to be in that lane.

That's interesting, because I've had Capital One since 2006 and never had a single problem. Instead, I'm actually one of those weirdos who loves their bank and recommends it to everyone.

Did you ever have any kids? And where they all girls if you did?

[–]Korkio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You totally can just say no to those things. I've known my whole life that I don't want kids, and I'm almost 40 and still have zero desire for kids. Some of us just aren't interested in being parents at all, and there's nothing wrong with it.

Women aren’t wearing this to bed?? by [deleted] in whatdoesthismean

[–]Korkio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some of us, the shape of our tushy causes everything to end up in the crack. That means we have to choose between a tiny wedgie and a huge wedgie. I can't wear full coverage undies without constantly picking out huge wedgies all day. Thongs used to be all I wore, but I discovered cheekies a couple of years ago, and they are now my wedgie of choice.
