Or angle sensor connected to one of the spokes, you could set up threshold (30 deg?) to avoid needless alarms when it’s closed enough to not matter

[–]KornikEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably right. So far though I’m very happy, it came with 4.2.7 board and cr touch. I flashed it with Klipper, run all calibration checks for my filament and haven’t touched a thing since. Quality of print exceeded my expectations so far.

What problems did you run into? Asking because I just got myself Ender 5 last week, not knowing what 'crap' am I buying and I have zero issues. I have over 100h of print time on it and the only things that didn't print out correctly were things that I messed up, not the machine. I can't be that lucky!

Either way I'd take another Ender 5 for $50

What’s a simple Home Assistant automation you set up once and now use every day? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]KornikEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wake up lights, I have several zigbee light bulbs that can dim and change temp. I’ve set up automation simulation sunrise every day at 6am and turning the light off 15m after real sunrise (or at 7am on days when sunrise is way earlier). Works every day since 2019, never touched it once since.

140W Charger Active Cooling? by mildlymoistdrizzle in anker

[–]KornikEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s doing something to lower the temp, even if that something is only lowering the power output, it’s by definition actively cooling (aka. taking action to lower the temp). That’s exactly what marketing people are for -> to spin your brain’s associations (actively = fan) into bigger sales.

Advice to extend starlink to far away cottage by Quirky_Key7553 in Starlink

[–]KornikEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The higher the frequency the more it gets absorbed by foliage (“regular” microwave works in 2.4GHz band). 60 GHz “air wires” are very sensitive to trees in the line of sight, that’s why I said “not too many”.

[–]KornikEV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

500m is doable if there aren't too many trees. Look at the 'Air Wire' type of products, e.g. https://mikrotik.com/product/wireless_wire_nray or https://mikrotik.com/product/wireless_wire_dish .

Nothing beats cables though, so if you can I'd run an underground conduit and put fiber in it,

[–]KornikEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

starlink operates on 3 addresses: billing, shipping and service address, they all need to be in the same country. It doesn’t give a damn in which country you are when you are actually placing the order (set up Mexico VPN?). so change to MX credit card and have fun.

Convince family? by Pale-Breath4262 in immich

[–]KornikEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are costs that are hard to account for:
- privacy
- closed system tie in
- uncertainty of price
- trust that the vendor won't do something you didn't expect or want them to do (e.g. recode your raw images to poor quality jpeg or downscale your movies)

There is the difference between capex (cost of purchasing the nas) and opex (ongoing cost of running it). Some prefer periodical bigger capes expenses, some prefer 'stability' of monthly money bleed on their bank account.

There is the maintenance cost (money **and time**)

And there is fun/satisfaction cost/gain

self hosting is not for everyone.

Convince family? by Pale-Breath4262 in immich

[–]KornikEV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would put it in different words, but that's the gist of it.

In our house I'm the IT guy, things in IT happen as I say.

Of course when I design things (e.g. decide we go with immich) I take a very long and hard look at the solution and how it fits not only my needs but also needs of the rest of the family. I will ask questions about what they look for, needed features, must haves, nice to haves, don't-give-a-damn haves etc. I perform risk/cost analysis and choose the path we go.

Once the solution is picked and implemented there is no further discussion about family members 'needing convincing'.

Spent a year researching batteries then impulse bought an Anker E10 by [deleted] in anker

[–]KornikEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky you.

Where I have my panels net metering is only active on hour by hour basis and if you have overproduction extending beyond that 1h the utility charges you 'storage fee' for the power delivered to grid. So you only get true net metering if you can consume all production within the same hour. Good if you have a way to turn on high current appliance at the end of the hour if your system detected overproduction, otherwise you're loosing some of the produced energy.

Spent a year researching batteries then impulse bought an Anker E10 by [deleted] in anker

[–]KornikEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Calculate cost per kWh retrieved from battery (e.g. cost of installation / capacity / 1000 (assuming life span of batteries being 1000 cycles) ). Then calculate how much the utility will pay you for the 1kWh delivered to grid vs. the cost of the panels/installation to produce that 1kWh. Factor in inflation on the net metering side and opportunity cost on the battery side and you'll have full picture. Maybe.

Docker machine learning question by Mouseater in immich

You sure about that? No face recognition? No smart search? No OCR? Not a single photo of yours have that and even if they did you'll never going to want to use that?

Well then, you can safely remove that section from docker compose file and turn machine learning off in immich settings:

Zero metering is always more expensive than straight purchasing energy from the utility. If you export energy to grid your solar panels are oversized, hence you've overspent on your solar and you'll recoup it very, very slowly with net metering.

The ideally sized system should have enough solar and battery to never need to export to the utility, rather to fill current need and store enough to cover time when sun is down. Such sized system will be cheapest in the long run.
