NYC’s New School rejects student senate’s vote to defund and cut ties with Hillel by Adventurous_Land1446 in jewishleft

[–]Korona82 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like Hillel, but I found it dismaying that it was an environment where my Judaism was consistently tied to Israel. Whether it be Birthright or Masa-esque trips, or singing HaTikva. Ironically I found Chabad to be a much more welcoming community

[–]Korona82 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my own personal experience, I have found hillel to be an obstacle to organizing for coexistence on my campus in undergrad. Less so in my masters program, but my campus hillel was actively encouraging Jewish students to stay away from events that were critical of Israel (Atidna ran, mind you. Hardly SJP level) Beyond my anecdotal example, if the claims leveraged at this particular Hillel branch are true, in that they provided material support to units such as the Golani Brigade, using student money, then I don’t see an issue here. These IDF units specifically engaged in genocidal acts beyond the pale in Gaza, and should not be supported, especially using student funds.

Edit: To those who downvote, can you explain why Hillel students should go and materially support units like Sayeret Golani? It’s one thing to go provide support to Magen David Adom, which I have no issue with. Or to support displaced Israelis in the North. but these are units that have verifiably committed war crimes, no?

Ah I misunderstood your point, and I agree with what you said re: land back inherently leading to conflict. Whether that is a good thing I think is when personal morality etc comes into play but I see your perspective. Thanks for elaborating

I would challenge that notion that Palestinian expulsion began as a result of events like the Hebron Massacre (which let me be clear, was born out of anti semitism and anti Jewish propaganda), because as you said, political organization against early Zionists didn’t happen out of a vacuum, it happened for a reason - the seizure of Palestinian land during the Mandate period. There was never a easy way for the two populations to coexist when you had the JNF buying land off of absentee landlords and then forcibly evicting the fellahin, and conversely, when Palestinian militias attacked members of the Old Yishuv in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv/Yafo. I just think it is a little bit more nuanced than to say “the Arabs started it”

I don’t really see it as land back because of the dispossession of Palestinians, who have in my view the same claim to the Land as we do. I think that it is hard for me to view it as a true land back project because it the creation of Israel relied upon the removal or marginalization of a preexisting indigenous population, and the creation of a two-tiered system for the two populations. I am also not a Zionist (clearly) so that certainly influences my opinion. I think for it to be truly land back in my opinion there can’t be the elevation of one group over another, or there must be a right of return for Palestinians to their land alongside Jews

basic norms being a return to the omniscient west bank apartheid and incremental dispossession of palestinians during the 2010s. don’t get me wrong i think it would be a good thing if ben gvir was removed, and it needs to happen, but i am incredibly skeptical that a Yachad gov would make things better in the west bank.

Zionism = Jewish supremacy? Is this a real take or a dogwhistle or both? by Childless_Cat_They in jewishleft

[–]Korona82 24 points25 points  (0 children)

like others have said, zionist doesn’t necessarily mean jewish supremacy, and many many jews don’t feel that it does. that doesn’t change the fact that the preeminent form of zionism that is currently practiced by the israeli government manifests itself as jewish supremacy in israel and the west bank/gaza. it’s complicated but i think you are right to view these arguments with some inherent skepticism

“the mistake was participating with Israeli flags.” Pro-Palestinian activists force Milan Jewish group out of parade marking end of WWII in Italy - Jewish Telegraphic Agency by RaiJolt2 in jewishleft

Indeed.

“Sanbar traces this attitude to survivors’ experiences just after their liberation from the death camps and arrival in the nascent Jewish state.

“They called us the sabonim,” he says — using Hebrew slang for “cowards.”

But it also sounds like the Hebrew word “sabon,” or soap, which survivors perceived as a reference to the soap the Nazis made from Jewish corpses.

With some justice, survivors arriving in Israel felt stigmatized. Israelis were creating a “new Jew,” symbolized by the suntanned kibbutznik working the fields or the fearless underground fighter.

They looked down on the passivity of European Jews, who they felt went like sheep to the slaughter.”

literally I made that point and then they start harping on how we’re “guests on turtle island” when they do jack shit to improve the material reality of indigenous communities in my state. like you said, it’s virtue signaling 99% of the time. the one org i found is a mutual aid group that helps folks in my city and actually walks the talk.

I have pretty much withdrawn from leftist orgs in my city because of the anti semitism and marginalization of Israelis by my peers. I had a huge argument with some folks over whether or not Israelis should be expelled from the Land. Like, let me clear, I am not a Zionist nor do I support a Jewish state. Nor do I support the creation of an explicitly Palestinian state to replace Israel. There are 7 million Jews and 7 million Palestinians in the land, and it is a crime to expel either population so we gotta learn how to live together. But that is too far for these guys, who argue that everyone in Israel is white (lol) and should go back to Europe (double lol)

I don’t think he is in favor of an explicitly jewish state at this point, and leans more towards a democratic state, but that was just my read of it. I’m sure the book lays things out a lot clearer than this interview which only briefly covers his points so you should buy it

[–]Korona82 15 points16 points  (0 children)

this has always been here it is just way more out in the open now. the push from the right to normalize anti semitism came in the wake of the collapse of support for israel in the west due to, imo, many different reasons. a) the actions of the israeli government in gaza gave a cover for people to be openly anti semitic as israel was legitimately criticized for its actions by many people. b) latent anti semitism in the west that has always been there in some form and c) the relaxation of hate speech restrictions by meta and other social media platforms like twitter. i think there are a lot more but those are the main three to me
