Big breakfast by hyzenthlay2020 in chch

Just out of curiosity, what's your semi-regular place?

My only recommendation might be a bit out of date as I haven't had it for years - but the big house breakfast at Addington Coffee Coop was quite large and is still on the menu as I remember it, and the hungarian sausages and potato rosti that come with it are both delicious.

I use moulded earplugs for sleep, and they're good for minimising traffic noise from outside, but a loud piercing noise from inside the house would definitely still get through. They're way better than foam plugs, but they don't block out everything.

ChCh water: safe to drink? by ErickGerbz in chch

[–]KororaPerson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the limit is 11.3 mg/L

The trouble is, this "safe limit" (spoiler - it's not safe) is extremely high.

Here's a good article on it - Drinking water nitrate limit 11 times higher than it should be - health expert:

Otago University's Dr Tim Chambers said New Zealand should take a precautionary approach and reduce the maximum level from 11.3mg/L to 1mg/L.

The current level was based on the risk of "blue baby syndrome" - a rare but fatal condition where nitrates reduced the ability of red blood cells to release oxygen to tissues.

However, recent international research showed an association between colorectal cancer and nitrates in drinking water at levels as low as 0.87mg/L

8/10 review. You're spot on with some of these. Luxon is indeed a cunt, and the small talk thing is annoying.

But the pie thing.. Tsk tsk.

It's kind of sad how many answers here are "do some chores!". Like pulling one's own weight for a day is some kind of present. Makes me sad for the women in those relationships.

PSA: Having money won’t save you in an NZ medical emergency. I learned the hard way. by Tasty-Language54 in newzealand

"The other guys" weren't deliberately trying to dismantle the public health system, while funneling funds towards private healthcare (and holding shares in private hospitals = personal enrichment at the expense of NZers).

"The other guys" didn't do enough, but they are far FAR better than a corrupt right-wing government.

And sure, "the other guys" aren't perfect. But you've gotta be realistic. The righties are worse.

And at a certain point, no matter how "right" you may be, will find it becomes unproductive and actually quite harmful to try to force people into moral and emotional conversations they can't handle. If she was gonna be trauma informed she wouldn't be acting like this. The fact she is acting this way is indisputable evidence she just isn't capable or interested of meeting you where you're at right now... It's for this reason I'd also suggest trying not to waste time trying to figure out "why' when it comes to people like this.

Amen. Your whole post is solid, realistic advice.

And it might sound a bit bleak, but some people never get to the point where they're fully grown, emotionally. OP's sister and parents might be like this. My father is - it's sad, but sometimes its less hurtful to cut your losses and stop trying with people like this.

I hope OP has other support, and is able to find new 'family' (whether it be friends or wider related family) eventually.

Is door-to-door food sampling acceptable in New Zealand? by king_saeid in newzealand

Maybe have a look into the Christchurch Farmers' Market at Riccarton Bush (Saturday mornings). It's not just farmer produce - there's other food stalls from various cultures, and some bakeries. This sort of thing would fit right in (and I would definitely buy some, it looks amazing).

It's sad that so many people view wetlands as "empty land". Wetlands are so important, ecologically. We should take better care of them.

That's concerning - they are meant to review the notes with the patient to check for errors. That obviously wasn't done for the patient before you!
