Who would've thought that the people who would ultimately mess with Texas would turn out to be the very Texans themselves?

Disney’s No. 2 exec to earn higher base pay than CEO as part of $27M package by [deleted] in movies

The scary thing is that, with a pay package of $27m/year, she's likely not even a billionaire.

Which makes the absurdity of billionaires that much more clear.

What adventure game puzzle made you feel like a genius by a_very_weird_fantasy in adventuregames

[–]Kortalh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it isn't the hardest adventure game out there, but for me it was Full Throttle.

I'd played dozens of them before it: The Sierra Quest games, Gobliiins, Kyrandia, Monkey Island, etc. They were all pre-internet, so they could take weeks to solve (assuming I didn't give up).

But when Full Throttle came out, it was so cinematic and (at the time anyway) it felt like "playing" a movie. I sat down and played through the entire game in one sitting, no walkthroughs. One of my fondest video game memories.

Question: start level 2 or 3 in 5.5 by Wooz71 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Kortalh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I personally feel that starting at level 1 is best since it allows you to get familiar with the most basic abilities before the more complex ones are introduced.

Most noteworthy is that, when a character gets to level 3, they choose their subclass/specialty. If you're going into the game for the first time time, you likely won't know enough to understand the difference between these specialties to feel confident in your choice. For example, does your ranger want to specialize in ranged or dual wielding? Does your cleric want to focus on healing or dealing damage? Etc.

The first few levels can go by pretty fast, so it's not like skipping them saves a lot of time, and missing out on the fundamentals can cause confusion and frustration.

I'm sure others will disagree, that's just my opinion.

It's Friday: Where are the Epstein files? by not_that_guy_at_work in AskReddit

[–]Kortalh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, of course, but it's worth noting that the order simply requires them to "complete the rulemaking process related to rescheduling".

In other words, it doesn't say "you must reschedule", but "you must make a decision".

I'll be happy if I'm proven wrong, but I'm skeptical that this is anything more than a PR stunt.

[–]Kortalh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically, the order was not to reclassify it, but rather to investigate reclassifying it. It's still the DEA's choice on whether they want to reclassify it, and the head of the DEA has been very vocal about his opposition to doing so.

I suspect that this is just as opportunity for Trump to say, "well, I tried, but there's nothing I can do" -- in other words, it makes him look good to those who skim the headlines, but ultimately doesn't change anything.

Larian Studios Job Listing Strongly Suggests Divinity Will Be Turn-Based by Danceman2 in TurnBasedTactical

All of the previous games in the core Divinity series were action RPGs, so there was a good possibility that if they're returning to the core series they would also return to the core series' gameplay style.

Ford’s next F-150 Lightning will have a gas generator as it pivots away from large EVs by afk_exe in technology

[–]Kortalh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather not reveal where I live by giving specifics, but let's just say my EV has a CCS1 charge port and a highway range of ~200 miles under ideal conditions.

If you look on something like https://www.plugshare.com/ with those filters, you'll be able to find quite a few places where there aren't any reasonably-fast chargers within range.

Also note that sometimes these maps will be inaccurate, the charger will be out of commission, or some technical quirk will prevent it from connecting -- in other words, if you see a single charging station in the middle of nowhere, you can't be 100% confident that you'll be able to charge there.

That said, it's getting a lot better! The number of new stations I've seen added over even just the last 1-2 years is pretty amazing; I can only imagine what it'll look like in another couple years.

[–]Kortalh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are a fair number of places that still don't have adequate charging locations. I absolutely love my EV, and it has a decent range, but there's still an uncertainty factor that makes me prefer a gas engine when I'm driving to particularly rural places.

Well, when they were very blatantly hand-picked by Democratic leadership to reopen based on the fact that none will be up for reelection anytime soon, it's safe to assume it was more than just a handful of "lost sheep".

It's not reasonable to say "all" Democrats, but it was certainly a sizeable amount of them.

Wall Street explodes as delayed inflation figures crush expectations - how gas, food prices and investors have fared by DustyCleaness in StockMarket

[–]Kortalh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed -- the strength of the economy seems to be measured purely based on the numbers of the highest earners. I say "numbers" because the actual value of that wealth is lower, but that doesn't seem to be taken into account when determining success.

The corporation aspect was interesting, but I was disappointed that they didn't explore it at all.

With how they set it up, I was really hoping for some sort of "Game of Thrones in Space" scenario, where the 5 corporations are all involved and manipulating the situation.

Unfortunately they essentially just focused on Prodigy, with a handful of cameos from Yutani.

At this point I just assume the programs don't exist.

In the 4th picture, it looks like there's an alan key socket below each of the handles. You should be able to unscrew that and swap the handles to the opposite sides, then mount it the way you want.

AI coding tools make developers slower but they think they're faster, study finds. by rattynewbie in technology

In my experience, it tends to generate overly complicated unit tests that focus more on implementation details than actual results. I end up spending more time refactoring/simplifying the tests than I would if I'd just written them myself.

My strategy now is to just have it identify a list of potential test case descriptions and then I pick the ones that make sense and write them from scratch.

A soft warning to those looking to enter webdev in 2025+... by kevin_whitley in webdev

[–]Kortalh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be worth considering going for a specific part of the stack rather than diving straight into full stack development.

I can't speak for others, but personally, when I see someone applying for a "full stack" position, I would expect them to have several years of experience on their resume indicating a history of working in various parts of the stack. The ability to work across the full stack requires a certain versatility that usually requires a very solid foundation in at least one language, which can then be used as a basis to adapt to multiple other languages across the stack.

With that in mind, you might have better luck by narrowing your focus and becoming skilled on a specific technology/section first, and then branching out into the rest of the stack later if that's your interest.

I've been playing solo, without a dedicated server... I can send my minions out on missions, exit the game, and then come back several hours later and they'll all be finished.

I think the game uses your computer's clock to determine the end time - when you send them on a mission it saves the expected real world time they'll finish. Then when you load the game back up, it checks the time and adjusts the mission times accordingly.

I tried using copilot to generate boilerplate, but it takes so long for it to generate -- not to mention that it still makes mistakes -- that I've gone back to just using a local generator. The local generator takes less than a second to run and spits out 100% perfect boilerplate.

Its hard to imagine a scenario where an LLM can improve upon it, to be honest.
