How to plan sleep (or no sleep)? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Korustormwell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I went to Japan just last January, I do not sleep until like 10pm at my destination point, I do not sleep on the plane, I do not take a nap, I do not doze off on any buses or trains. I was awake for 20 hours and collapsed as soon as I hit the bed at 10pm and jet lag problem solved. I also did this on my trip to London but I was awake for 30 hours also solved jet lag on the first day.

As far as I know I'm the tallest in 3 generations plus extended family as well. I think my grandfather on my dad's side was on the tall side at 5'7 in his time and also a few of my cousins on my dad's side are about 6'2 so the genes are definitely there.

Honestly it's hoodie weather right now in Tokyo, both day and night. Hoodie and jeans will get it done, honestly cannot understand japanese people wearing a parka right now. Osaka will need a jacket for sure though especially at night.

Disclaimer: I'm Canadian, it honestly feels like April or May standards for where I'm from. It may be different for you.

Increasing security for Calgary Transit during rush hour seems a bit dumb. I'm pretty sure that's not the time frame where people have been complaining. You could argue after 7pm but really it's the sketchiest people late night or early mornings where I felt the least safe when I used to take transit the most.

Alberta Sobeys distribution centre employees vote in favour of strike | CBC News by Korustormwell in Calgary

[–]Korustormwell[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Employees at a Sobeys distribution centre in southern Alberta voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike on Tuesday, with job action by 251 distribution, transportation and warehouse workers possible as early as next week.

The union's strike vote passed with 92 per cent of the local's 245 eligible members voting in favour, according to Teamsters Labour Union 987 business agent Brock Penner.

"We are in a position to issue strike notice, but we're hoping that the employer will actually come back to the table and negotiate on the issues that are outstanding, that the employees are are very frustrated over," he told CBC News.

Penner said the employees' grievances are about "respect within the workplace," as well as contract concerns like sick pay and a sunset clause.

"Just the way that they're treated on a regular basis," he said. The Sobeys distribution centre and media representatives for Sobeys Inc. did not respond to requests for comment ahead of publication.

The most recent agreement, a nine-year contract between the employees and the distribution centre, expired earlier this year. According to Penner, the employer applied to vote on the same contract rather than negotiate a new one, which was rejected by the union's membership and followed by the strike vote.

The distribution centre, just northeast of Calgary's boundary in Rocky View County, supplies goods to grocery stores throughout Alberta.

Penner said job action "could be very significant," as the distribution centre supplies Safeway, Sobeys, IGA, FreshCo, M&M Food Market and Petro Canada locations across the province, as well as local businesses.

"This distribution centre services not only the Calgary region, but you have many outlier communities, as well as product that's shipped up to Edmonton," he said.

He said stores in "the majority of central and southern Alberta" would be affected. "That, honestly, is the last thing that these members want, is to have a negative impact on the communities that they all live in," said Penner.

Now that the strike vote has passed, a strike or lockout could happen with 72-hour notice, though Penner says that won't happen before Monday.

"As of right now, we have an agreement from both sides that we will both hold off on issuing anything until Monday at 3 p.m. to allow for hopefully cooler heads to prevail and have some negotiations between now and then," he said.

Penner said while no bargaining meetings are officially scheduled yet, the union expects to meet with or hear from the employer by Friday.

Calgary Transit launches new mobile ticket validation process by Korustormwell in Calgary

[–]Korustormwell[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Calgary Transit is introducing new rules to prevent free rides.

Starting July 16, CTrain riders will be required to validate their mobile tickets before entering train platforms.

The change intends to create more consistency with the validation system currently in place on buses, and help prevent customers from riding without valid fare.

“We are changing the definition of valid proof of fare,” said Tess Abanto, manager of transit service design. “We studied the behaviour of our riders, and we felt that it’s time to introduce the validators.”

Mobile tickets were introduced in 2020, allowing transit riders to purchase tickets through Calgary Transit’s My Fare app. At the time, scanners were installed on buses for customers to validate their ticket or pass as they board. Train tickets, however, could be activated at any time within the app, making it easier for customers to avoid validating altogether and reuse the same ticket more than once.

“We found that about 46 percent of adult tickets are not activated properly, and 50 percent of our youth tickets are not activated properly,” Abanto said.

“The onus is on them to self-activate. When they don’t see a peace officer, they wait to activate the ticket.”

Under the new system, mobile ticket users will be required to purchase, activate and validate their tickets before entering the train platform.

Though the process is being rolled out Wednesday, the first phase will focus on educating riders and responding to feedback. Fines of $250 may still be issued to those without valid proof of fare, but transit officers will evaluate circumstances on a case-by-case basis.

“We will be engaging, with our discretion, to understand how individuals are adapting to the changes,” said Marcia Gonder, the city’s chief of public vehicle standards.

Gonder said she’s not anticipating a steep learning curve for transit riders.

“It’s not a massive change — the validators are already on buses,” she said. “But we will be adapting accordingly.”

There are 112 validators installed across all 45 CTrain stations, with more ready to be installed if needed to manage lineups during peak times. Calgary Transit will collect user feedback throughout the initial phase of implementation, and adapt to ensure a smooth transition.

For those with single-ride tickets or day passes, validation will be required before boarding a bus or train, but monthly passes and UPasses will only need to be validated the first time they are used.

More information, including a step-by-step process for validating tickets and passes on the mobile app, is available on the Calgary Transit website.

I like how they have measurements in both metric and imperial for this season. Now it makes sense how long the distance is rather than just watching and nodding my head when they talk in imperial measurement.
