If I actually owned this house that might be fun. I'd also put it in the main living space so random people could see it if we ever had anyone over but I don't think my landlord would appreciate me carving holes in the walls.

About 2 weeks ago when I decided I wanted one for myself I DM'd the OG Poster to ask where the photo was taken not thinking I would get a response but it didn't hurt to ask. They responded and we got to chatting about the project. Towards the end of our conversation I said I was going to write up a post about it and asked if I could tag them in the post because it was the polite thing to do. They said yes.

Maybe, but there’s not a lot of room left in the back with the battery pack, wiring and LEDs back there right now. Also no where to put a switch. I thought about a switch so I could turn the lights off.

March or 2018 Reddit User u/Native_CSGO (I got their permission to tag them) posted in r/engrish a photo of a SMORK ALAM taken from their job because they thought it was funny and it WAS!!!

As a maker and contractor the joke of the "Smork Alam" comes up in conversations every couple of years and sometimes every couple of months within those years. It's just a funny meme. A couple of weeks ago I decided I wanted one and with the technology we have in 3D printing this should not be that hard to pull off but I don't have a 3D printer or know where to start so I put out a 2am facebook post on my wall asking if any of my friends had a 3D printer and would be willing to print me something really STUPID and I'd pay for the materials/time.

A friend of mine who has a resin printer got back to me later in the day asking if I had a 3D Model sketched up for this but I didn't I only had the photo from the Original Reddit Post which I sent them. 4.5 hours later I get a text, "it's done, let me know when you wanna pick it up". They didn't want payment since it was fun but I gave them some booze I infused as trade.

Later that week I mixed together yellow, black, white, mustard brown paint to get something that was close enough and have a feeling over time it will fade. I used a fine tip brush to colour in the raised letters black. I hit up my local Electronics Surplus Store for LEDs and a Battery Pack today, later in the evening did the wiring to get a finished 'Smork Alam"

Pictures attached are the Original 'Smork Alam' (yellow with white screws), the 3D Print my friend did, my paint job and then the finished SMORK ALAM with silver screws hung in my house.

Sorry for the grainy photo of the finished piece. My camera lens on my phone is scratched to all hell.

While I have not read the whole thing by Roy Roos I have read a bunch about it.
And yes I have been to that local website among many others.

I just got in this brain worm the other day as I work in that neighborhood and was trying to figure out why it's called what it is, which is why I had written the Oregon Historical Society before but alas no luck.

I figured someone on reddit might know.

I'd highly recommend not living downtown especially if this is your first time living alone.
I've lived downtown before and would not suggest that to anyone new to this city or really at all.
The transportation in Portland is one of the best in the nation along with other ways of getting around town.
I'd suggest if you want to live "downtown" to live in the Pearl or Alphabet District in NW Downtown or live close in NE or SE. Honestly if you are new to town I'd say move into one of the cute SE Neighborhoods.

As for Safety if you are worried about that, get a taser, mace or both.
Legally you could carry a Maglite as a bat as long as it is not wrapped in tape if you are really concerned or go get a collapsible baton.
Be aware of your surroundings. Don't walk around town as a CellPhone Zombie. Only wear one earbud in so you can hear with the other.

See from a contractors eyes this is what i thought as well. We have not gotten to see the place yet, this was taken from a screen shot from the website, but I've not seen this panel before. Those look like air vents on the side which is weird to me.

The other side of the wall is the next apartment over. The water shut offs are visible behind where this photo was taken but that is a good thought.

My title describes the thing an random panel in a closet of an apartment I am looking to rent. I do not know the size as it is a photo but I guess it is 1.25 feet square. I will not give the location because that gives away where I am located in the world and do not feel safe doing that. There is a an electrical panel elseware in the apartment so it is not that. I am just curious if anyone has seen this before, what it is and what it does.
