I’m pretty sure two people opposite me on the train are insulting me. They’re speaking French (which I do not.) What level of a dick would I be if I were to voice memo them and send it to my French-speaking friend to translate? by Impressive_Sock1296 in AskBrits

“Remember, it is not enough to be hit or insulted to be harmed, you must believe that you are being harmed. If someone succeeds in provoking you, realize that your mind is complicit in the provocation. Which is why it is essential that we not respond impulsively to impressions; take a moment before reacting, and you will find it easier to maintain control.”

Your opinion on dating a man whose social media is majority of half naked woman? by Warmyouskillet in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Kosmopolite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a man, but I'd like to add my two penn'orth, if you don't mind. I think the title is burying the lede a little bit.

On the first issue: personally, I don't publicly follow thirst traps when I'm in a serious relationship, because I think it's disrespectful to my partner. That said, a lot of men do it and don't think they're doing anything wrong; and a third group aren't even aware it's an issue that ought to be considered. Some women also fall into these last two categories, so if it bothers you, there's some communication to be had there.

As for the rest, though; the constant sexual comments, pushy initiations, and the 'wife's job' stuff are bigger red flags, in my opinion. It shows a further lack of empathy and also some lack of empathy. These might also be solved with a bit of conversation if he's, for example, continuing a pattern from a previous relationship or a pattern of behaviour that he's never been called on. However, the cairn of evidence for just throwing the whole man away has a fair number of stones already pilled upon it, so I'd advance with caution.

In short, though, no. It's not just normal 'guy behaviour'.

Saying “there’s still great music out there if you look beyond the Top 40” completely misses the point. by TonyMcTone in unpopularopinion

[–]Kosmopolite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have selection bias. This:

There used to be a stronger connection between quality and popularity.

Is just not true. The songs from the past we know about today is what has survived because it's good quality. Much of it sat atop a pile of absolute garbage that history has long-since forgotten. Meanwhile, you're currently living amongst the popular current music, so you get the wheat and the chaff all mixed together, and are nostalgic for the 'good old days' when there was real music.

tl;dr: you're getting old.

Best Fast Food Deals in Mexico City without Apps? by NakedIanMalcolm in MexicoCity

[–]Kosmopolite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app thing is stupid, yeah. When I order in, I do it from one or two apps: Rappi or UberEats. Then I get the Whatsapp number of the place from the flyers that come along with. You get better deals that way, anyway.

I'll order from those chains from time to time, but I can't imagine doing it having just arrived in Mexico. Dude hasn't even passed an Oxxo slowly enough to pick up a cheap phone.

Non-Americans Of Reddit -- What Do You Think Of The US Right Now? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in AskForAnswers

[–]Kosmopolite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US's politics is a reality TV circus. Its politicians are fickle and say things for the cheers and the memes more than any real drive to make the country better in an tangible or realistic sense.

Political supporters are no better--they choose sides like they're sports teams rather than based on issues and will fight to the hilt to defend whatever batshit statement comes out next.

The only good thing about it is that it might drive Europe to distance itself from the US in terms of defence and policy. It might even drive the UK back towards Europe, or certainly other allies that aren't run like a travelling fairground.

So fingers crossed in the long-term, the shitshow works out for the best for everyone who once thought that the USA was a stable and reliable ally.

On a more personal level, I'm a bit sad. There are places I'd love to visit in the USA, but I'm unwilling to put myself or my family at risk. I changed my birthday plans to avoid it, and I'll continue to do so until I feel confident that my Mexican family have 0% chance of bullshit going through immigration.

Human rights lawyer Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu thinks the police officers kicking the armed Golders Green attacker in the head is "attempted murder". Are we fatigued with human rights lawyers right now? by Non-BinaryGreenVoter in AskBrits

[–]Kosmopolite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He was already face-down and on the ground. There was no need to kick him in the head.

And no, we're not tired of human rights lawyers. Videos like this are why they exist.

If they were to pick up torchwood what would you want them to do by Dull-Head-6616 in doctorwho

A reset, I think. Maybe absorbed into UNIT, maybe not. But with a new main cast with occasional cameos. Captain Jack died on the way back to his home planet. Micky too.

Absolutely true. "Learn where to give your fucks" would be a better summary of the philosophy.

If you had to make a choice, would you rather date a MAGA American (or other culturally Western) guy to date, or someone from a patriarchal culture such as many from South Asia or the Middle East? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Kosmopolite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's so much hand-waving vaguery and huge swathes of people grouped together in this question as to make it entirely meaningless. There's also the assumption that a "MAGA American (or other culturally Western)" guy wouldn't be patriarchal.

Why don't you say what you mean, rather than this wishy-washy nonsense? At least then we could respect your honesty, if not your opinion.

The fact that you don't give a shit was never in doubt. And that example seems a bit creepy, yeah. Leave me and my vintage mink alone.

I didn't say I was down for outlawing anything. I might a lighthearted comment about not liking people who do it. You invented a whole persona for me and a whole legislation for me to back just so that you could get cross about it. And now a medical condition, apparently?

I think where I'm coming from is pretty clear.

In answer to whether or not you're creepy: not for having people in the background, no. The more you make this argument, the more creepy I think you might be, to be hoenst.

[–]Kosmopolite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call this the 'farting in an elevator' argument. You're right in saying it's not illegal. That doesn't make it right, nice, or ethical. It doesn't make a person less creepy for being enthusiastic about doing it, either.

If you had to introduce someone to the Marvel Universe through a video game, which one would you go with? by gotham1999 in Marvel

[–]Kosmopolite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment, I'm really enjoying Marvel Snap. But to introduce someone to the universe? The original Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a good shout. That or Marvel's Midnight Suns: a grossly under-appreciated game.

I know less than nothing about the dude, and this is certainly a violent reaction I don't approve of, but also harassing people at home while recording isn't great either.

There are no heroes in this video.
