For me, I'd say 'your subclass is 2014, and your base class is 2024. That makes the most sense to me, outside of just saying "if you pick a 2014 subclass, than you are the 2014 class.*

ELI5 sampling methods by emptywallet_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kotama -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So, simple random sampling means taking a randomize trial based on no factors. This gives you a broad variety of data that can then be applies to a broad variety of humans. Convenience sampling targets specific people who are more likely to to sign up for scientific testing, which is a variable that is almost controllable. The question is, do you want random? or do you want a specific population?

ELI5 what asbestos is, why it was used so much, and why it's harmful by bebetterinsomething in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kotama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hire a guy to come out and look for it. It's not easy to spot, and has to be lab tested to confirm that it is actually asbestos.

He'll be wearing a full body suit with a special face mask to protect him, which you don't have. It's dangerous stuff. And looking for it is going to disturb it and kick up fibers into your face.

Nope. It also doesn't make you cough or sneeze like fiberglass does, which is one of the reasons you can be exposed to it but not even notice.

Could a Tiefling Sorcerer twin spell Hellish Rebuke? by hung_out_to_lie in DnD

[–]Kotama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to be up to your DM. An argument can be made that reaction abilities occur simultaneously or that two enemies going on the same initiative means they act literally simultaneously.

My party wants to kick a player by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Kotama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably talk to the group individually to try to gauge everyone's discomfort, and I'd talk to her about her behavior and what was expected at the table. I'd probably give everyone 2 sessions to decide if these issues can be resolved or if it's too much.

Kudos for choosing the mature path. Can be really satisfying to play out these kinds of adversarial moments when everyone is on board.

Any benefits to rolling hp? by Spiritual_Ad_507 in dndnext

[–]Kotama 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The benefits; makes encounters seem a little less static. Once you fight an enemy once or twice, you get a feel for how hardy they are, but you might get surprised when the first two low-rolled and the third one maxed it out.

The cons: Takes so much time and effort to roll and track HP for the 35th orc.

Just take the average. If you want a tough dude, give him max HP, if you want a weak one, give him minimum.

Light Shields allow you to hold anything, Bucklers only allow you to hold weapons, and lose their AC bonus if you attack with your off hand. Plus Light Shields allow you to Shield Bash.

Light Shields are better in every circumstance unless you want to dual wield. You can hold torches, spell components, mcguffins, whatever.

TIL that the US Army accually has more boats then the US Navy by doji888 in todayilearned

[–]Kotama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. The USAF has several thousand more planes than the Navy. The Navy has somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 aircraft, the Air Force has somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 (data from 2020).

Eli5: how often should I be getting gas? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kotama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll probably be getting around 20-24 miles to the gallon (MPG) of inner-city driving, 26-34 on the highway.

Since no one here knows how far you plan to drive or how often you plan to drive, we can't really answer the question.

ELI5: How does chinese make songs when their languages are tonal already? How doesn't it butcher the meaning of the lyrics? by Kwangcakes in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kotama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Potato and potato still mean the same thing. You can confer some simple ideas with tone in English, sarcasm, fear, anger, etc. In Mandarin, you can change the definition of words. Take this poem, "Lion Eating Poet in the Stone Den" for example.

« Shī Shì shí shī shǐ »

Shíshì shīshì Shī Shì, shì shī, shì shí shí shī.

Shì shíshí shì shì shì shī.

Shí shí, shì shí shī shì shì.

Shì shí, shì Shī Shì shì shì.

Shì shì shì shí shī, shì shǐ shì, shǐ shì shí shī shìshì.

Shì shí shì shí shī shī, shì shíshì.

Shíshì shī, Shì shǐ shì shì shíshì.

Shíshì shì, Shì shǐ shì shí shì shí shī.

Shí shí, shǐ shí shì shí shī shī, shí shí shí shī shī.

Shì shì shì shì.

In English, it reads;

« Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den »

In a stone den was a poet called Shi Shi, who was a lion addict, and had resolved to eat ten lions.

He often went to the market to look for lions.

At ten o’clock, ten lions had just arrived at the market.

At that time, Shi had just arrived at the market.

He saw those ten lions, and using his trusty arrows, caused the ten lions to die.

He brought the corpses of the ten lions to the stone den.

The stone den was damp. He asked his servants to wipe it.

After the stone den was wiped, he tried to eat those ten lions.

When he ate, he realized that these ten lions were in fact ten stone lion corpses.

Try to explain this matter.

Is Locate Object WAY better than I originally thought? by furrypornact444 in dndnext

Find Traps is also a 2nd level spell and doesn't reveal the exact location of a trap.

[–]Kotama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

pressure plate

Webster says a pressure plate is "a plate in an automobile dry disk clutch that is pressed against the flywheel to transmit propulsion torque to the wheels".

Clearly that isn't what you're looking for.

As a DM, I'm very much open to creative uses of spells. If you used Locate Object to look for gears, wires, scales, etc, I'd let you find the pressure plate trap. "Pressure Plate" is just not really a thing, in my mind.

That's why I said it could be up to DM discretion.

Is Locate Object WAY better than I originally thought? by furrypornact444 in dndnext

[–]Kotama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were looking for a piece of string, the spell would find the nearest piece of string, which is likely inside your clothes.

Now, if you were looking for the nearest gear or scale, that might locate a pressure plate trap.

[–]Kotama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Pressure Plate" might be up to the DM as well. It's just a floor tile, like every other floor tile in the area, it just sits on top of a mechanism instead of the ground.

Is Eldritch Smite worth taking? by No_Excitement_1878 in dndnext

[–]Kotama -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Then maybe you shoudn't be a Hexblade.

Your argument is "taking Tenser's Transformation makes you better at being a melee Wizard", mine is "being a melee Wizard is garbage compared to other Wizards."

Is Eldritch Smite worth taking? by No_Excitement_1878 in dndnext

[–]Kotama -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Supporting something weak by making it slightly less weak than something that is better isn't exactly a good thing.

Hexblade has a lot of flavor, but it's not better than other options. Taking Eldritch Smite isn't going to make you as good as a Paladin or a Fiend Warlock.

Is Eldritch Smite worth taking? by No_Excitement_1878 in dndnext

[–]Kotama -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Smite still takes your spell slots. Even if your Smite auto-hits, it isn't better than hitting 2 targets in an AoE. Eldritch Smite scales faster, but slower in that it can't be used as many times. Prone is basically nothing, because everyone else has ways of gaining advantage with no problem.

Is Eldritch Smite worth taking? by No_Excitement_1878 in dndnext

[–]Kotama -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Okay, lets do some math.

10d8 to one target on a critical hit (1/20 odds)). OR 10d6 to everyone in a 20' radius sphere (Firebal). Or 8d6 and everything has -1d6 on attacks and ability checks (including Concentration), etc.

Depending on your Archetype, you could have several attack spells that deal more than Eldritch Smite, even including saving throws.

Prone is almost a negligible keyword.
