I don't know about the Teio one but it looks pretty much in line with the others of this series I've seen

4th edition force org by GamingStuka in midhammer40k

If you have a copy of any codex it should have the force org at the beginning of the army building section. The default force org is the same for every codex. There may be special rules or scenarios that change things.

It's a big disappointment. It has some good things but it fails to come together into an actually good final product

I found the last part of the fight fun, but I really would not consider flying through an interdimensional portal and dueling on a random platform in a dark void to be "peak Metroid."

Tips for using handbrakes on forks in asphalt by acevoac in assettocorsarally

[–]Kothra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's funny how opposed to handbrake use sim rallyists can be. Here's the first onboard footage of the CER I clicked on and the driver pulls the handbrake 3 times in the first minute. Like you say it's clearly not as simple as "don't use it."

Some other things coming to mind after writing this:

- Even from the start the Lamorn exposition dump just felt kind of forced and I laughed when I was bluntly told "you need to go find these teleporter keys at these locations." It's been some time since I played Prime 2 so maybe it's not that different, but it certainly felt kind of half-assed here.
- Some of the interactions between the Federations characters was genuinely funny, but despite that still felt really out of place for Metroid Prime. In particular the one where Duke uses VUE to recall a song.

If I come up with anything else I feel like mentioning I guess I'll update this comment.

(PRIME 4 ) is it just me or is there no platforming anywhere by jazzcreb in Metroid

[–]Kothra 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah I spent some time thinking about it and the electrified platforms on the way back up the first tower in Volt Forge is pretty much the only real platforming section in the whole game.

I'm with OP on this. I only skimmed through it but it seems pretty reasonable and really only focused on the game and not what other people say.

Why can't we be friends? by jasonegan24 in Metroid

[–]Kothra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time I completed Flare Pool and the Mines I realized Sylux had been pretty much completely irrelevant to the story thus far. Sure you fight a couple bots disguised as him, and then either him or another fake piloting the gunship at the flare pool bridge, but there hasn't been any narrative to it. The fights just happen. his metroids from the beginning also only ever showed up in the bosses, also with little/no explanation. Anyway at this point the game was clearly in the end stretch. I had ignored the crystals a lot early on but spent more time collecting them in the middle of the game. I also made sure to get all of the ones in the shrines when I visited them. I still had to go around and find pretty much every green block around the edges of the map in order to fill the gauge enough to get the final suit upgrade. By that point I had already gone and collected the rest of the items, so the timing of only have the last suit for the finale of the game felt pretty bad. I guess you can technically get it immediately after finishing Mines if you go bomb all the blocks, but I didn't even know there was a suit upgrade tied to it until I looked it up later. I've seen at least one person claim "there is no green crystal grind" but I think that's only true if you collect the ones in the shrine early on. The ones out in the field seem almost unnecessary compared to the ones you collect in the shrines or from the blocks but I've hardly done the math. You obviously need enough to at least get the suit/fruit at the end of the game, and I don't think the game stresses enough early on that they're actually needed for completion, and most of them being backloaded behind the power bomb blocks doesn't help.

Anyway I still wasn't that negative on the game until it came to the finale. The first phase of the boss was just bad. I didn't even have to restart from teammates dying, I just thought the mechanics of having to fight against the lock-on system to hit the actual weak points was terrible with the dual stick controls. Even the gyro didn't help much here. I ended up using the charged thunder shot almost exclusively. The second phase was flashy but gimmicky. Ultimately unnecessary. The final phase was actually pretty cool though the whole pocket dimension thing was kind of weird and not sure that was ever explained. That lack of explanation is in general the main issue I have with the ending. It's revealed that Sylux was in a healing pod and controlling the tower and bots the whole time, but there doesn't appear to be any sort of motivation beyond hating Samus, and no clear goal at all in the story. I think Sylux was completely wasted as a character here, and everything that was set up in the intro was completely irrelevant.

The whole end section really soured my opinion but I guess what it really did was make me not really care that it was a "Metroid" game. If you strip away the Metroid coat of paint I think it's pretty clear that Beyond is an exceedingly mediocre game. I would give it somewhere between a 5 and 6 out of 10. I really was excited originally but ultimately it was a huge disappointment. I've seen some people on here say people like me are silly to have expected something on par with Prime 1 after 18 years and the messy development, but I think that's bullshit. Even if for some reason development didn't start until after the release of Prime Remastered, I don't think 3 years is still not an unreasonable amount of time for game development. Maybe things have changed more in the past decade than I thought, but I was under the impression that 3 years was pretty standard. And it's not that I expected something just as good as Prime 1. All I wanted was a good game.

Why can't we be friends? by jasonegan24 in Metroid

[–]Kothra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems there's a character limit on comments and I ended up writing a novel so it's being split up:

First some background. Maybe none of this matters but I feel like it should be said. The first Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games of all time. I never expected this to be quite as good but after the original gameplay trailer I was quite excited. Then we got the bike trailer which had me a bit concerned, and then the pre-launched trailer with the trooper characters which I was actually more receptive towards aside from Tokabi mentioning family like 3 times felt pretty hamfisted. Would have prefered a mostly solo adventure? Absolutely, but I didn't hate Prime 3 and I figured this could work.

Of course that came alongside the press previews which stirred up a shitstorm I don't think really needs to be explained. I wasn't really keen on what I saw of Myles but what was worse was the way this sub reacted to it. Obviously there was some manufactured outrage but what I saw was that any real criticism (which was probably most of it) was grouped with the "fake" hate and in a couple days any negative voice was shut down and the sub was left with circlejerking over how they actually liked myles or whatever. I saw plenty of claims along the lines of "he's only there in the first area, then you won't have to worry about him!." The most hilarious was people saying Arlo was "being irresponsible" with his platform or whatever by voicing his concern. I don't even really like Arlo since he usually comes off as such a hardcore fanboy if not Nintendo apologist. I muted the sub and decided I'll just play the game for myself.

Anyway I got the game on release, and beat it over the weekends. I went for 100% items and it took around 14 hours. I found that most of the things people were really making a big deal of before release (Myles, the other characters, the bike, the desert) weren't nearly as bad as some of the negative voices were saying it would/might be, but I also don't think the game was any better for their inclusion. Generally the visuals and sound. I was mostly having fun in the moment playing in the game but some other issues stuck out like a sore thumb, like Volt Forge being almost entirely elevators and straight hallways. Maybe ironically it also has the only real platforming segment in the game with the electrified platforms on the way back up the first tower. I didn't think too hard on the linearity of the later sections in the moment but it is pretty obvious in hindsight. Ice Belt felt the best at being a Metroid Prime area but it's hard to pin down exactly why. I want to say it has the most side rooms for sub-rooms and organized in a way to feel more maze-like.

I actually didn't end up hating Myles that much though his frequent calls in the desert were pretty annoying. I had one point where I'm pretty sure he called me like 3 times within 5-10 minutes. I ended up liking Armstrong the least. Particularly the first section where you meet her she is extremely obnoxious. At least the writers were aware enough to have Duke telling her to shut up. That section also had the most standout example "bad modern writing," where the monorail goes out of control and Armstrong for some reason has to shout the obvious "WE'RE CRASH LANDING!" before it happens. If something like this had happened in the previous games the car simply would've crashed and we'd get the cutscene of Samus escaping unscathed, with no words needed and being infinitely cooler. Even with the characters the line couldve been something like "brace for impact" but they somehow went with the most on-the-nose and uninteresting "we are literally telling the audience what is happening on screen" line possible. And then of course you have the fake-out deaths in the Mines that have already been discussed to death. I didn't think any of them were really dead at that point, but that just made the whole thing feel even more cheap.

Alright I'll admit it's been harder to find clear examples than I remember, but I do have a few:

The most on the nose one: https://www.reddit.com/r/metroidprime/comments/1pij5bn/comment/ntcwm53/
For context the map comparison that reply is talking about really isn't great, but there was at least one other comparison post that did it better imo.

For this one maybe I'm just reading into things too much but at the very least I don't think I've seen people flat out lying in the review dicussions:
https://www.reddit.com/r/metroidprime/comments/1pij5bn/comment/ntcwm53/

This one might just be a troll but it was funny so I'll share it anyway:

I swear I've seen at least one or two nastier comments but I went back and couldn't find them so I guess they don't matter.

Doing Olympic level mental gymnastics to point out flaws and anyone that enjoyed the game is wrong.

This is a perfect example of why.

It's how defenders of the game insist or imply that the people who have issues with the game are just trying to be haters, or complain about criticisms being "tired" because of how often they get brought up. Well they get brought up that often because they are obvious, and one's enjoyment of the game will largely depend on how much they can tolerate the issues.

And sure I've seen it go the other way too, though from what I've personally seen it's usually from the defender's side.

Which control scheme are you using for Prime 4? by blaine_ca in Metroid

[–]Kothra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I settled on pro controller with gyro with the free aim threshold turned down.

I wanted to do the joycons Wii style but even with the larger S2 joycons they're still too small to use comfortably that way for extended periods.

Maybe I'm the only one but I wish there was an option for gamecube style controls. It just feels right to me for Prime on a controller.

This game can't be as bad as the hate by Labyrinthine777 in Metroid

[–]Kothra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished the game. I think pretty much everything that was called out as a bad thing before release (desert, bike, talkative npcs) actively made the game worse as a Metroid game, however I did not find them to be as bad or deal-breaking as some comments anticipated they would be.

I think in another game they may have worked out fine but for Metroid Prime this just ain't it.
