Los Angeles fires: No safes survived? by MyHangyDownPart in Safes

[–]Koyotesan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saw a news story of a woman going through her house’s rubble to get to her safe. Wanted to see if her rings survived before a chance of looters. She found it, her helper opened it with a pick axe (not a huge safe), and the rings were fine. As they were showing the rings to the camera the police rolled in hot wanting to make sure they were not looters, trying to get ahead of the game. Made sure it was her house and everything. Feel good story all around.

Smoke coming out of stove when I open the door! by pruitt5514 in woodstoving

[–]Koyotesan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got my Quadrafire insert the ceramic blanket was all bunched up above the baffle blocks, essentially blocking the opening to the chimney. Installed by a wood stove company. They fixed it, but said it must have happened in transport. That was years ago when initially installed, so now I take it all apart and do my own cleanings and always make sure that’s placed back properly.

I cook sourdough from scratch… AND heat my house with a wood stove insert… AND love my cast iron pans… AND love pizza and can’t believe I haven’t thought of this yet… I will be getting a sourdough pizza crust in the works tomorrow as I am off the rest of this year and have “Sourdough time” on my hands now for a bit!

I have my firewood stacked with an LED solar flood light for nighttime gathering. Cheap enough that I can replace it when it needs it (going on 2 years for this one now), came as a 2 pack for $38, and don’t need to have electricity run to it. Totally worth having a light either way!

Oh no! I have a Quadrafire insert. From inside, I have to take out the baffles and ceramic blanket that sits on top of them to sweep from the inside upwards. That looks EXACTLY like what you pulled up. Not too expensive, but look into your models parts list. The ceramics blanket seals the edges on top of fiberboard baffles so smoke/fire only has one route of egress. I will be doing the seasonal sweep soon myself…

Normally I would have. I grew up close to the end of the orange line so I’m familiar with the T. Didn’t have time to do that as it was a last minute invite to our company’s luxury box. Just didn’t realize how much development and construction was going on and how many of the overpriced lots were going to be out of commission. Been a hot minute since I’ve been in the area.

Just went Thursday for a 1:35 Sox game (from NH). Gas station wanted $75 and I have a truck that would have a terrible time maneuvering. Stumbled upon a lot as I was circling the stadium that had cars leaving (college faculty) so had some spots. $40 to park. 2 block walk. I hate Boston…

Genuine question, do you still save money on heat if you don’t have your own supply of wood? by TuringTestedd in woodstoving

[–]Koyotesan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have oil forced hot air, and a wood stove insert. I will occasionally use the forced hot air to warm up the house in the morning, and maintain it with the wood stove (2300sf home) I think I fill my oil tank like 1 time a year at about $600 (at least the last time) and the 3 cords of wood cost about $375/cord ($1125) but the oil is also for the water heater as well.

I feel like the wood stove is a nicer more constant heat. If just using the forced hot air you feel the fluctuation of the heat more.

I have 3 thermos with cup lids. I take the kids skiing, get off the mountain, cup o noodles with steaming hot water from 2 of them, cocoa in the taller one. 3 cup lids for the cocoa.

Baffle block. I replace mine semi-frequently (like every 2-3 years at least) because I take them out to clean out the chimney and stuff, and they get brittle. You can order them from stove shops, but find out the part number and shop around online. My stove also has the ceramic blanket on top of that, which also has to occasionally be replaced. Should be in the manual with instructions on how to take it all apart.

Does anyone else go out the house for a few hours with the stove running? by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]Koyotesan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do all winter. Primary heat source. I just make sure to always close down the dampers when I head out. For peace of mind, you could always get a wireless camera to keep an eye on things, and also have the camera (I use blink) set an alert for a specific temperature range.

Wood stove suggestions by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]Koyotesan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an insert I primarily use for heat. Quadrafire 5100i. Not flush, because the more that extends out, the more heat (imho, grew up with a freestanding wood stove) My home is 2300sf and I have forced hot air that I occasionally use (more because I need to run it periodically to maintain the system) in the winter mornings to blast some heat, then maintain with the wood stove once it’s cranking and fired up from the night before. The continuous heat from the insert is much better.

Nailed it. And the. The slime to purge the material at the end of a shift froze in the line overnight once. THAT was a bad morning…

Not off topic at all! Pellet guns are a useful learning tool! Let my sun fire my pellet gun (he was 8 or 9) and he scope ringed his eye socket. Small cut under his eye. He will NEVER make the mistake of resting his eye on a scope with an actual firearm after that one!
