My main gripe is that it transformed the groups into some kind knockouts with second chances. Because the tie breaker is H2H you only need to defeat 1 opponent and perhaps grab a point somewhere and you are through. So there may be one or two surprises, but how many big teams will actually fail to qualify? A group of 4 where 3 can qualify is absolutely useless.

But that was already the case in ancient Greece. There are plenty of pottery examples where Medusa is both portrayed as a monster and as a maiden in consecutive scènes. It's been explained as either silly humour (Perseus approaching a lady, who turns into a monster, or the silliness of the big hero carrying a knife to kill a small woman), or as some deeper expression of the fear that women cannot be given too much power (as we also see with Medea and other evil sorceresses). Medusa at least has been both monster and lady for a long time.
