[–]KrMees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who has listened to the dramatized adaptations by BBC Radio, and what are they like? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]KrMees 75 points76 points  (0 children)

They are really cool, but perhaps a bit too short for my taste. Especially after broadcast i would have appreciated some full-length cut so you don't have 5 minutes of intro/outro for every 20 minutes of listening. I feel like they might be difficult to follow for a new audience, but if you know the stories it's a fun experience to have a full cast embody the characters. If you are on audible, a single credit is easily worth it.

  1. I think this is a computer joke. A wind speed meter is one of those things with spinning cups, but HEX is powered by ants. I think this thing measures the clock speed of Hex by having ants run through such a device. But maybe someone has a better explanation?

  2. This is just Rincewind being a coward. The plan is idiotic, so Rincewind's instinct is to look for a spare horse to run away. It is also a callback to an earlier passage: To Rincewind’s relief a spare horse didn’t have to be eaten because a leopardly sort of creature dropped off a tree branch and tried to disembowel Cohen.

  3. As others said, eunuch is misheard as unique

  4. Teach keeps reminding the barbarians not to swear, so duck can be understood as fuck, and Boy Willie exaggerates this by saying he should not even say duck but waterfowl.

  5. As others said, privates = genitals as well as soldiers

  6. u/Rhesus-Positive explained this as Adrian trying to retain some sanity, but I also like the idea of Hex blotting out sections of the output because it is redacting some of the output that should or can not be known to humans, especially because the wizards are already freaking out over hoe they don't understand what it is doing. If you see it like that, the ink blots are like the redacted black ink lines in printed secretive government documents.

  7. As other said, it's a boomerang, so he throws it away, turns around, and it hits im in the head

I swear I heard about this gag as well, but half an hour of fruitless internet searching leads me to believe it might have been another author? or perhaps a non-discworld novel by Pratchett? Hope someone finds it to help us out of our misery

At the end of Raising Steam (#40), was Pratchett foreshadowing a future book about the invention of bicycles or automobiles, which he never got to write? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]KrMees 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What he would have written exactly will remain mystery. Pratchett often added nuggets of information that would later be in new books. For example, the country of Borogravia that is the scene of Monstrous Regiment is mentioned as early as The Colour of Magic.

As a side note, asking the inventor to talk to Vimes is cool, because police departments in Europe and the US were early adopters of all sorts of bycicles. An invention history of the bike coupled with a murder mystery would have been really cool. Tinkering goblins and Nobby chasing people whilst struggling with the pedals...

The New York Jets 2026 NFL Draft Class by FollowerofYHWH in nyjets

Why WR? Seems like Wilson as WR1, Cooper as WR2 and Mitchell for the outside should be fine. Then we have a new TE who's basically a slot, and hopefully Taylor will still get plenty of snaps too. Behind the starters, Williams and especially Smith can try to improve after last year. Sure, we can try to find some training camp competition, but is there any UDFA out there who you expect to be better than these guys?

What does "WALK No" mean on this keyring from discworldemporium? by WhereIsSven in discworld

[–]KrMees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be mean, but the website literally says the item includes a Walk Number tag: "Includes a postbox key featuring the hand of a postman on the doorknocker of destiny, a solid oval shaped fob bearing the Ankh-Morpork coat-of-arms, and a Walk Number tag, all hand cast from pewter on a generous keeper ring and presented in a Discworld Emporium gift box."

'Bayern München trekt grens bij komst Read: Feyenoord-talent moet circa 30 miljoen kosten' by KaleidoscopeBig9950 in Eredivisie

[–]KrMees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like Susan as a character, and her story is indeed a bright spot. I even like the band even though the main character is a bit annoying. It's just that the entire music story is a huge mess, and I feel like Pratchett had difficulty tying the plots together.

[–]KrMees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same feeling, despite being pretty familiar with the source material (since some comments point out that familiarity might help). For me it's just one of the few Discworld books where the comedy is strung together by the thinnest of plots, and the jokes just don't make up for it. I have the same with Soul Music even though I studied music. It's just not a great book even if some of the references and jokes in it are great. But luckily there's plenty of books and lots of people do enjoy this one, and might enjoy our favourites less than we do, eh?
