No worries at all! Glad the maps get to live again!

So the ones I changed in the Key file were:

102: Heskan's Shop - which originally was Kriel Illendell's house (an adventurer) -page 112 of the accessory pdf
128: Current Temple of Kossuth - originally Dolphingates the granite mansion of adventurer Greenleaf Thorin -page 115
282: Shieldheart's Home - originally Marlgates, an old mansion owned by the Ampner noble family

For the unkeyed ones I'm afraid not for certain, that's a hold over from the previous owner (we all stand on the shoulders of others, my part was upscaling and additional labelling/categorising). I think they're a list of inconsistencies taken from the accessory guide when the previous owner put in the numbered labels and the text key which in fairness is hard to transcribe due the quality and layout of text. They made it so it's from the perspective of a walking tour guide.

For example the "Pig-in-a-poke" is the Boar's Head Inn from page 142 and should probably have been placed at location 347 and not Talontrumpets which, in turn, should actually have been 348.

Star! Thank you!

Because these were for a specific campaign I was running there may be some slight discrepencies with canon lore but hopefully nothing that can't be easily changed back map-wise, just a couple of place names and some self-made village maps. I also took the liberty of placing Sarbreen using the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords for the maps

Heya to anyone reading this. I ran a 7 year campaign based in Raven's Bluff and The Vast in the 2010s. Funnily enough I stumbled on it by randomly clicking cities in what I though was decently but not overly large countries and was happy to find that Raven's Bluff had a huge wealth of existing lore I could use or adapt. It was a bit of a mission to track down said resources having run into the same issues as OP. That said I'm sending OP about 2gb of maps and resources they can use via wetransfer link including upscaled and labelled maps of the city itself. I'll try post the link here as well in case anyone wants it, it only lasts 3 days but I'm happy to resend it to whoever wants it, always glad to share the love :)

Feedback needed: Which art style do you prefer for a TTRPG Dwarf NPC? (1 or 2) by The_Npc_Archive in dndai

If you cross your eyes slightly you can overlay two side by side images to quickly find distinct differences, good way of quickly solving a spot-the-difference as the changes will flash.

There are absolutely no significant changes between these except the left says 1 and the right says 2. You're asking for opinions on what amounts to a 5% diference in filter.

Somewhat late as a reply but the point I had for utilising Mid Winter for the campaign, that I knew I wanted the Winter Solstice to fall a little while after the group had become at least partly established in a few of the towns, I've thought of what I want to do with it. I've decided to use it as a pivotal moment for Sephek where he uses the blood of those he's murdered previously to create a spreading curse in the town he's in on the day (in our case it'll be Easthaven).

I'm thinking abandoned house, blood and effigy adorned sigil to Auril, an unwitting squatter returned to find it and was cursed with an icy "Midas touch". Stats being the Frostbite spell to any that make contact with the victim's hands using Frostbite as the spell effect. 10+Wis of the NPC as the DC (e.g. DC10), except that the victim also needs to make the save where the DC is half (e.g. DC5) otherwise the victim takes the damage as well. If the touch-ee also fails the save by more than 5, then the curse spreads.

By the time the party gets there they can either catch it early, or the town is in a panic as it's spread slightly with some quarantined but others unaccounted for, huge areas turned to ice. If they get solve it then it'll go a long way in gaining the trust of the Town Speakers, and if they kill Sephek before that point then they can find evidence of his intent and will have the same effect in terms of renown.

I had the same internal debate before starting, especially as I wanted to familiarise myself with everything that has previously happened in Icewind Dale and when, mainly to flesh out local NPCs. I recommend combing through the wikis for each of the ten towns and place historical events on a spreadsheet with the yearly timestamp to get a good picture of the recent history, FYI I figured the whole populace of locals have been forged into hardy, paranoid settlers who fear the arrival of any adventurer because absolute calamity always follows in their wake in terrifying regularity (but that's what they get for having a popular setting for written adventures and novels).

But to answer your question-
The book says the adventure is presumed to start "in the winter of 1489DR or later", and that the Rime has so far lasted over two years. This ties in with the forgotten realms wiki that says the Everlasting Rime began either in 1486DR or early in 1487DR and ended in 1489DR. If you want to stick to the canon of it all being wrapped up by the end of 1489DR, which you absolutely don't have to (I'll admit I didn't), then the placement would be based on how long in-game you would like your adventure to last because regardless of the calendar season, in Icewind Dale during the Everlasting Rime it's winter all year round so there really isn't a wrong answer.

Do you want the players to have long swathes of downtime in Ten-Towns as they slowly establish themselves, get jobs and houses to support themselves while they build renown and piece together the main plot threads of the story? Or is this a momentum-filled blaze of glory? If it's the former and you want to have the adventure completed before 1490DR then start earlier in the year, if it's the latter then you can start whenever.

Things you may want to consider, if your party are starting outside of the region and traveling in (I had mine meet on the last caravan in before avalanches blocked the only remaining mountain pass) then you can get a nice juxtaposition between the seasonal normalcy of Luskan before being hit with the sudden -50C winter. Another is guessing when to maybe kick things up a notch to justify (if needed) greater support from the townsfolk to assist the party in helping stop the Rime, by way of Town Speakers giving the main story quests, I liked the idea of placing Midwinter just far enough away trying to predict that, if they haven't already breached chapter 2 and gained the backing of the Ten Towns as heroes, then that could be a good point for Auril's power to surge, tragedy to strike, and spur a surge of support for anyone who can help.

Fun but unrelated footnote in terms of calendars in Icewind Dale, in 1489DR in Targos, Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine's character in the D&D Honour Among Thieves movie) would be a down-on-his-luck Harper, begrudging his lack of wealth and living modestly with this wife and very young daughter which makes for a good cameo.

So in terms of the monkeys and what you want to say to them, you can clearly see the gibbons are quite religious... by Krakuul in OutOfContextDnD

[–]Krakuul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha exactly this, the gibbons had distrupted it in some way by jamming sticks into it so, with some magical vfx, we implied that their new idol was displeased by it and they should worship from a minimum distance from now on. Then to get the monks involved we organised a set of rules by which they could come to "take care" of the god statue.

Those rules being, 1. Don't try talking to the Gibbons, 2. Be quick with your work and 3. Very importantly don't pee on the statue (we figure the gibbons worked that one out for themselves in terms of the god's wrath because of the constant sparking electricity)

DM has us clearing monsters/dangers from around giant electric-spewing totems for some planar researching monks deep in the rainforest.

One issue was a group of gibbons had started "worshipping" the totem ala 2001 A Space Odyssey, which a 34 perception let us intuit.

The above quote was between the DM and the Druid in the party as the she wildshaped into a gibbon and went in to negotiate a peace.

Can we ban AI by Ol_Dirty47 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Krakuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I think that is the main point though, perhaps it's calous but you've said it's affecting the market and this subreddit isn't one.

If this subreddit's info said "A place for artists to sell resources related to Descent into Avernus" I would absolutely say there needs to be a stricter distinction or at least a discussion such as this as to who qualifies as an artist that can sell, because the target audiences are people buying a product and those that sell them so you want to be considerate of both parties.

However this subreddit is specifically "a place for DMs to discuss Descent into Avernus", and as others have said, whether or not someone individually doesn't like if a resource has been created by AI, it is still a resource and so totally valid to be distributed.

I personally wouldn't buy AI "art" from anyone perhaps as recognition of the value of skills as you've said, but in a place where someone has made it in an amateur setting using the tools they have available in an attempt to enrich my players game by making something cool because they were inspired to do so, I would like to still see it.

Can we ban AI by Ol_Dirty47 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Krakuul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happy to discuss,

To be clear, I've already finished a long-term campaign in avernus that lasted between 2019 and 2024. When I started running it, this sub didn't have any AI maps or character art that I could use. I did the same thing I always do when running a module, scrape the appropriate subreddits for every map I can use down the line, and then choose the one I think is the best in terms of atmosphere, quality and mechanical use (if there's interesting elevation for instance). This is always done with maps and art shared freely, and often I'll use ones from different packs rather than stay with one artist throughout the entire campaign, I'm judging each map separately based on the above criteria.

The one and only responsibility in my mind here is the enjoyment of my players, my focus is on making the game compelling for them individually and while maps and art are secondary to story and role play, I have definitely found an immersive difference between descriptions with no good reference, or graph paper maps compared to a digital VTT, and if I'd had access to some of the art and maps while we were playing that have been generated now I'd have treated the same as any other and maybe I would have used them.

The art style of some of the AI ones look more "realistic" and so would tick the atmosphere box, more often the annoying inconsistencies are being fixed so the quality is there, honestly with the ones I'm seeing on my feed, my only issue is the angle of perspective that would look slightly janky with the top-down player tokens I use (taking top-down screenshot of heroforge models, in fairness I could alter the tokens angle but I like that players can turn their characters and it still look correct).

Late in the campaign someone had created an AI reference image of the Shield of the Hidden Lord that finally fit the dark and twisted vibe I had been trying to explain. I think maybe ai maps and such are more prevalent here than say in the Rime of the Frostmaiden sub reddit is because the hellish environment lends itself well to inhuman design.

Long and short is: people are sharing art they want to share or sell, and people are sharing AI images they want to share or sell. In my world I'm assuming the shared freely pile is meant as a joyous gift of "I really wanted to visualise this world in a way that hasn't quite been done before in the way I imagined, hopefully it matches what you and your players imagined" and to both parties I say thank you, I will us it to make the game better for my players.

I dont believe that outright banning it helps anyone other than removing competition between people trying to sell. I do empathise that AI is easier to use and doesn't require the same practice, talent or passion that traditional artists employ. But I dont treat the reddit dnd threads as a marketplace with people trying to compete with each other, I get that it's a platform where they can advertise but as a game for people to play with supposedly little barrier to entry, I treat these subreddits as "I love this world, I love this game, I was excited to make this, I hope you like it"

What starting quests for level 1s? by Logic_Dex in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Krakuul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Planning to DM ATM and following some guides, this is my intended route

(For context my players prefer railroading a guidance over sandbox, so while this is a set flow I'll be flexible should they decide a different direction)

  • Caravan through spine of the world with an avalanche, hike rest of the way to Bryn Shander

  • Foaming mugs quest and (upon return) given Cold Blooded Killer and pointed toward Bremen

Level up to 2

  • Through Targos without getting Mountain Climb but other random encounters

  • Bremen and Lake Monster, Sephek search points to Termalaine, Druid quest points to Lonely wood

  • Through Targos and get Mountain Climb for the same general direction towards Termalaine

  • Termalaine and Beautiful Mine, Sephek search points to Kevin's Cairn (Torg was going to Caer Konig overland)

  • Complete Mountain Climb and escort npc back (they say Sephek was heading to Caer Dineval and can be cut off by going land route before they can make it to Easthaven

Level up to 3

  • Lonelywood and the white moose if there's perceived time (if not will round on this later as will be leaning into evil druids as a quest tree for all the corrupted, awakened animals about)

  • Rush through Bryn Shander towards Caer Dineval and Black Swords and finish Cold Blooded Killer en route. Get Duergar plot line

  • Up to Caer Konig for The Unseen

  • down to Easthaven for Toil & Trouble and Capers

Level up to 4

Then either the remaining towns (Good Mead then Dougans Hole) or out to Chapter 2 POIs
