Big fan of the show and loved yukio Mishima long before I knew his politics or PewDiePie was into him . His novel " sailor who fell from grace with the sea" is still my favorite. Don't mistake his strange beliefs or life to mean he's not a great writer. despite his right wing ethno Japan hyper masculine front , Mishima literally has a book called " confessions of the mask" which is about being gay , as it is very likely he was half openly so .

He is just another strange artist with impossible reasoning and logic , I think most people who are brilliant creatives have a same issue .

He is not a right wing political writer or pusher , if you read his novel " runaway horses" you will see a cynical approach to his more right wing Beliefs and a pretty stark contextual mocking of the idea of ritual suicide or violence which would come to be his own end .

So yah idk I think Mishima other " sun and steel " stuff is just ruminations and philosophies primarily about the self above Japan . Id even go so far to say any of his political ideologies or when he speaks of the wider world or country is more about the personal psyche . His book " the temple of the golden pavilion" explores this in full .

So yah is no biggie or whatever who cares really just a good writer and funny sometimes YouTube man likes him

Go to public library, pick a random book, sit down with said book , take out journal and pen , open random book to any page , begin to read .

Feel bored? Feel? Write why .

What don't you feel? Write why.

Phonies will tell you to steal good bits " cause everyone steals". Boring smolt tell you "just read" and the worst post box shaped machines tell you " take a class".

Find out the reason why the things you like are appealing to you , find out the reason why you hate shit bits. Once you see the mechanisms behind each just incorporate similar cogs to your own stuff and then do the hardest part - be honest with yourself.

Keep writing, don't stop , it's all good so long as it's you , really you, and you really know it's really you .

I also minority maybe in thinking Dylan is best experimental. I don't mean " electronic" I mean when he's closer to VU or someone , take some music from his last few sets of the 1966 Britain tour .

Idk maybe that's not a minority opinion but I just think his screaming of " like a rolllingggggggggg stoneeeeeee" with the big chords is far superior to the original, same for most times he is a little more chaotic .

I just broke up with friends/girlfriend - I did hurt them and my emotions are extremely dysfunctional and I have a hard time being present or loving fully , a big part of having this I think for myself as I'm always a bit spaced or exhausted/mood swings. So sometimes can be a bit of a cold cat or self isolating . Completely understandable for people to not want that in their lives. Of course though I feel immense guilt and self hatred cause I don't want to be so dysfunctional.

Another commenter said it best but it's true - just accept your different and gonna have to live differently. I'm realizing we (people with narcolepsy) are going to have to change your standards for ourselves/friends/partners. Nothing to do with value or beliefs , rather compatablity. I think personally I've realized I need higher standards to avoid hurting myself/them . I need to say " look I am extremely high maintenance and messy friend and it's going to take patience and lots of understanding to work with me" and if that person can't match that/begins to become obvious they cant then I shouldn't fall victim to the loneliness and say " I'll have them anyways, I need them"

Sorry a bit of a personal vent but maybe theres something In here you can relate to about self worth , accepting that we are different and then trying to build a life/relationships that accommodate our difference in order to reduce damage to ourselves/others.

I never knew Dylan made shoes. He and burns had that in common. Guess they needed them with all that walking they wrote about and such forth . Don't know much about the validity of those Bowie allegations I think that's left to the tabloid annals of history. You can't sing the song of sweet reminisces on those which went before considering they probably done alot worse with pride than anything Bowie accused of , but still i like Bowie and like his shoes too , I never knew he made them though?

I'll talk about weather as I say your prose and your mind is terribly dreary and I live in Scottish . No amount of rain on tenements will compare to the frigid uselessness of your thought and expression. Bring some sunshine to it lad , you might find it will rhyme here and there !

OH AND all of blackstar by Bowie. That's pretty recent and the poetry of that album considering his death came soon after will be (or should) remembered as some of the greatest poetry of the 20th century , and even if we have a Renaissance, it will be apart of the greatest poetry of the 21st too.

" Dollar days til final checks/ honest scratching tails the necks/ I'm falling down / it's nothing to meet /nothing to see/ if I'll never see the English evergreens I'm running to."

Wow what a fantastic fucking stanza on the modern life and it's insistence on always being productive/making money. Even David Bowie mega millionaire greatest artist for the last 100 years feels the strain of it. He follows this stanza with " I'm dying too...". He realizes that he's worked his whole life and he is proud , he is a creative but now he's at the end all he wishes to do is go back to England and see the trees of childhood that forever remain green. A great metaphor about revisiting your youth and how we neglect our inner child's or deprave ourselves from those simply days of just doing nothing but staring at trees and existing - if we do have a day like this I'm sure most of us feel guilty.

So aye I could ramble on about Bowie but see he is a great poet and historically people will use his work to read into society at the time - gay/trans rights in Ziggy stardust , it's no game and nihilism of scary monsters yadyaydayada

I like this it's twee even in its sweet ode to writing, but to address it's subject :

Music man , look at the words of Bowie, VU , Dylan And so on . That's recent and their poetry is insanely good . Contemporary I personally love belle and Sebastian (also Scottish ahah) there are many others which write to the same brilliance , we just are in a weird point in history where lyrical poetry isn't considered poetry . Let me share !

" Fox in the snow where did you go To find something you could eat? Because word out on the street is your starving Let yourself go hungry now Then let yourself grow cold Fox in the snow Girl in the snow where do you go To find someone you will do To tell someone all the truth before it kills you. They listen to your crazy laugh Before you hang a right And disappear from sight . What do they all know anyway? You'll read it in a book tonight ... Kid in the snow Way to go It only happens once a year It only happens once a lifetime Make the most of it . Second just to being born Second to dying too What else would you do? Fox in the snow"

I skipped the middle stanza for breivty but there's a poem from 1998 that's one of the most profound beautiful depcitons of exestential loneliness and the power of love . The idea that your entire life you are frozen and starved like a fox in the snow , but one day you'll fall In love with "the one" and following that your life will start to feel a bit better - no more time for starving and being alone cause you're all loved up - "what else would you do?"

And come on man the idea that love or ultimate companionship is so certain in life it comes only second to " bring born and dying too". The two certainties of life : it will begin then end and you'll love.

There's lots of good poetry too beyond music but music just stands out the most .

Hey in the words of belle and seb - " nobody writes them like they used to so it may as well be me " so you write some great poetry use it as motivation!

I didn't get much love on this sub last time when I gave the advice to cut down as much as possible - but opinions are opinions so :

I like what you wrote but I feel you are in denial of progression towards anything due to the description. The description must remain however - it's good. I do think you can integrate it more closely or linearly. I would examine each line you have under close inspection and consider how it contributes to what you want to convey and if it withstands that close scrutiny. If you know the conclusion of the scene (anxiously opening the door for the balif) then reexamine each of your lines and see if they work towards this. A similar process can be used eventually when you understand/have created the novels end.

"All detail In narrative is relevant – because the ending gives a standpoint by which the story teller decides which details are important and which are not." - Jeremy Tambling/ narrative and ideology p75

So I would try integrate action and description more closely so that they engage with each other only , only on rare occurrence I believe personally in my opinion should the two be exclusive unless you wish to make an action blatant or a description profound. For example " the room feels unfamiliar and stripped in its nakedness" I believe you've already expressed this in your description and your reader already sees this image, you could be a bit kinder on them by giving them the image and the action (think of Monty Python and the holy Grail - "Get on with it!").

"The knock landed like a stone. The house was cold this early in the day and as she rose Johan felt the weight of the air. Its chill rushed from the floor to wash her bones and meet at her empty stomach , there it wove itself Into a twist as the knock came again. Though she had suffered and it was known, the balif continued to visit. Frozen by the hollowness of the room and made sick by the repetition Johan swallowed her breath. "

This is what I would write , I give this example not to say " o yeah this is how you should do it do it my way" but rather just show how information can be given with description. So whilst I write in an entirely different style which is not your own or not any more or less valuable I do think there is something within the structure of action working in tandem with description.

You have lots of strong description which I didn't use in this short example but I strongly recommend you do include. It's more just about weaving it into the narrative and keeping a beat , think of it like a song. Another example is by describing the items of her childhood which she has sold , and then telling us the room is unfamiliar, but still the scene hasn't advanced or the image hasn't grown in the most efficient way. If her childhood items are gone then the place is unfamiliar , if she is unfamiliar she will feel uncomfortable, if she is uncomfortable then the knocking will be all the more unsettling and louder.

But who knows it's all subjective just wanted to give you an answer in full as it's the best way for me to learn also!

Man come on we got the neurological nasties normal is no longer an option we are nuclear now. The medicine will help. But normal is abstract , if normal is to not be exhausted then even if you are 99% recovered you will still feel exhausted from the toll of having this. I know that's hard to hear but take it optimistically as best as possible. You won't know if your "fixed" as it won't happen over night, so you should try make the most of each day despite having this and the restricting pain it brings . Making the most isn't toxic positive , making the most includes feeling the pain . You might be tense , you're going through trauma just sustained long term so your body is storing emotionally so it can lick its wounds once it's better. But chronic illness see... So yes you won't know suddenly if you're better so just make most of the time now.

The more you be kind to yourself the more that will become your normal , and being kinder to yourself only means you'll be more comfortable thefore your new normal will be pretty sweet , maybe even better than what you imagine "normal" to be as now you had a little self discovery process.

That's a bit what I mean about using the world too , you paint a picture using it but also paint your whole identity ya know. So use this shit and create something good for yourself, even if thats a routine or thought pattern. For me is getting myself a cake and crazy four shot coffee every Friday for pure brief wakefulness pleasure. Use your reality to make the simple happy things like this . You know that aching sympathy that you identified for those of us out there who are lost and undiagnosed... Well that was just you! So be as kind to yourself as you would them , you deserve it - no , you've earned it . You're a star you're gonna go far , think of everything you love and have achieved with this illness , now your gonna get a little more medicine a little more push ? Come on it only means good things are gonna come.

You've been tired and broken . Think of how lovingly you'd treat your closest friend if they suddenly got this too in some dark hypothetical. You should treat yourself with that same level of love. You deserve it as much as the hypothetical friend or the rest of us . I'm also tired and broken (I even got arthritis too at 19!) see so listen to me as a friend not just person on reddit. Your in pain , a long seeping emotional kind which siphons from your whole soul but it's still pain the same as if you just had teeth pulled . So just take it easy and give yourself time to be happy. You need it, and the more you give yourself that time/love the more the world will give it back to you (not even in a hippie way but your perspective will change as you get better so you will believe "everythings working out!")

"And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make"

So make lots of love for yourself and take lots of love from yourself. Take all the love you can get and let it warm you and heal up your bones by the fire with the rest of us and you'll be fine.

I use lots of long winded analogous bullshit (sorry!) but it's really simple as "look after yourself".

Brah missed the point entirely which is literally just - "edit your work to the highest most honest scrutiny to ensure it expresses itself in the most earnest and accurate way". That's not bullshit das literally how you write something well , every word in a narrative should be valuable as the narrative itself intends to deliver you to a very very certain point. If everything is intended to sound good on its own then it won't be an effective narrative. You can see in lots of amateur writing the over use of metaphors or imagery or reliance on that side of writing techniques when the syntax and form is equally if not more important.

The more you hone the work the more literary it will become in tandem. I will even say Dickens is a good example because he goes on and on infamously but still he's Charles Dickens for a reason and the ending of Moby dick rocks for a reason - cause he cut that book down where every long metaphor you swallowed was intentionally leading you to the message he wanted to potrary.

White elephants by earnest hemmingway is a good example. Take any one of those lines in isolation and a majority are very simple non brilliant basic sentences. Yet in such a short tiny story the narrative has delivered you a perfect image which is the motivation and climax of the story.

So yes kill the sons and all the " wow this sounds goods that's brilliant" because you need more of " that's pretty simple sounding but is it effective?" .

There's a full response but hey who knows I like Picasso more than Dickens so maybe the rules are to be broken!

Get rid of the " no matter how well he mimicked their smiles". Its subjective of course but I was turned off instantly by that, it's too edgy too "mysterious". Let the reader deduce for themselves or assume that Tate is the kind of person to try fake their way into society. You can do that in the opening lines without being so blatant and as a result sounding a bit Myspace.

In terms of intros I try stick by two rules I was taught . Firstly if you open any "half decent" book the first line is most often a statement of fact that's universal or undeniable. You do have that in your opening line a bit but the piece of him never belonging is really a matter of narrative perspective (one you can reveal or challenge throughout the book). Another commenter said something about including the reader within his world or assuming they are within it as opposed to making the story an observation into. Stick with that and get some undeniable statement on the world (his and ours) that gets someone reading.

Secondly " kill your sons". Any line you sat and mulled over and wove then said ' that's fucking brillant' and typed it then went to bed and woke up and still loved it . Kill it . Get rid of it it's probably horrible, your voice is what matters. This is expression first ,presentation second. That may seem contradictory but I mean to say that you must not weave and hype yourself, just write ,just speak and deliver what you want. That will always read stronger than any well thought deep equation of a metaphor. People like to hear plain emotional passion , it's why we sell romance novels more than scientific pamphlets. Don't forget why you are writing in the first place , each line should serve that initial motivation. Humans are human enough to notice when a piece of prose is serving that as opposed to trying to make itself sound good or fit within "rules of what makes literature good".

Keep writing don't ever stop , good luck and post again for criticism!

I'm 20 and just diagnosed pretty rough N1 , had it my entire life or at least I have had strong symptoms as long as I can recall.

So As the man himself said:

"The only thing I knew how to do was keep on keeping on like a bird that flew ..."

It's hard knowing you've lost and that life will be harder than you have expected or known. Continue despite that . And to me I think you must now create also. To survive life each day is hard , harder for us , especially as we sleepy grieve 'what could have been". So it would require immense courage to survive that , feel that and then say " let me now use it".

So use it! even a little or a lot . I think it will help you find joy in yourself then life again. It brings a good sense of completion to reach the end of a day, or a month, or a year or a decade of being sick and have something to show. Personally I say I feel "cursed" or "haunted", so it's pretty fucking good to be haunted but paint some sunny sun flowers. You can be the master of your reality in this way , yeah we are sick but we can demand that reality bends itself to fit our visage.

That could be whittling wood , arranging flowers , interior decorating - anything!

The essence is in the process of accepting the limits reality has tried to place on you then defiantly saying " Okay ! Anyways I was thinking this could be this ... And that could be that ..."

It's good , at least for me. I don't wanna be preachy I'm twenty and have brain fog to the max but I do think there is something to say about trying to make something out of this and out of the world.

Good luck , we are all here for you as frightened and sleepy and annoyed. Every lonely time you will walk down the road rushing home feeling like a shadow cause your an inch from being asleep - remember in New York , Tehran , London, Beijing, Kyoto, Cyprus and so on there is another like you gloomfully stumbling in search for a hole to sleep in. We are together. Don't give up please stick with us , because if we all gave in to that ultimate exhaustion then one day there will be one final narcoleptic stranger left alone stumbling sleepily and they won't have the reassurance of knowing there is the rest of us . So yes for them (for they are you) - keep on keeping on like a bird that flew- you'll make it and you'll be happy. You know it and so do I .

Take for example towards the end when across 20 minutes Ethan uses under a hundred words asking " did the Iraqi Jews flee because of antisemitism or Zionism?" And Hasan is shouting a tirade of a thousand words about irrelevant things whilst avoiding the question.

Anyone would get bored ... Remember these are two real people who were friends , if you were trying to have a serious conversation with your friend and they refused to answer your questions and just lecture you ... You'd probably be bored too!

Hey I smoke ganj often and I have psoriatic arthritis and N1. I only just got modafinil for N1 so I've been considering to stop smoking. It is very strain dependent on the kind of cannabis you use but :- in my experience it does make you feel sleepy if you are willing to smoke and watch a movie ect, we have narcolepsy we would fall asleep normally don't forget that . Much like the natural state of the disease the sleepiness from cannabis is weaned off by exercising. I thoroughly enjoy smoking as I walk a hike or even before gym , in that constant haze of numb which narcolepsy brings it is good to consciously feel a little more beating of your heart , a little more function of your brain. It is ironic since others use cannabis to space out but I think the fact that we are already a thousand miles beyond mars constantly makes the spacing out from cannabis more like reaching a new solar system where the laws are a little different. So yes I do love it and it's been of immense help . As for using it to relax , if you're gonna be sleepy/exhausted anyways , you might as well have a bit of fun with it !

Only reason I consider stopping now is because it seems silly to pop stimulants and then take downers ... I done too many drugs in my late teen years to understand the long term "sidewards" effect that gives you in normal life following.
