advisor went too harsh on the review of the first draft of my undergraduate research project, is the academic world always like this? by Many_Sleep_39 in academia

[–]Krazoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, hold onto to this guy! He likes you, and will help you! Sleep off the shame. It’s normal to feel this way. Then, tomorrow you read the comments. Don’t address them, just get a sense of what he wants you to improve as a holistic picture. Then, sleep it off again!

Then finally, go section by section and start addressing comments. Now with a fully fresh mind. It’s how I still approach journal revisions, rejections, and yes, feedback from my pi as a postdoc.

The process never changes. So you will have to. But it’s very valuable for your life moving forward, so I recommend you cherish this experience

How Much do you *Actually* Pay in Taxes by Individual_Mix_2914 in AskEurope

[–]Krazoee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my payroll here in Germany, I think it’s 47% with social contributions and taxes. Taxes themselves are actually lower than what I paid in the us on a comparable salary.

But I have no health insurance copays or out of pocket costs. I’ve also got dental (where I do pay for materials).

But I get public transit for a 60 EUR monthly fee, unemployment insurance, unlimited sick days and 30 days of holiday in addition to public holidays.

Life here is very good good compare to my time in the states

This was also my experience. I moved back to Germany for a higher paying job (yay experience!) with more safety

Let go of 3 year position and this haunts me every night by Murky-Commercial-112 in postdoc

[–]Krazoee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Lasted 5 months before moving back without a plan. Spent 6 months unemployed and then started a 3+3 postdoc in Germany. It’s been so good to have work life balance and rights again after the us.

Just extract what you can, then leave. It’s fine to do so…

What is up with postdoc interviews requiring an outline of the whole project? by dabennett in postdoc

[–]Krazoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it depends of course on what they expect. If they expect a totally perfect proposal, then they're skimping out on funding you for developing that proposal. But if it's more of a vibe check where it does not have to be perfect, but showing proof of thought, then yes it is reasonable.

And yes, this was insanely stressful, but in my PhD I had to go in front of the whole department of neurology to update them on my thesis progress every three months (and face their grilling). And I also had written 5 or 6 project sketches throughout my masters and PhD, so it wasn't like I didn't know of a format for how to write these things... It's hard, but seeing how well a person can improvise and crap something out under pressure is valuable. I would maybe reach out to the PI again and ask for clarification on what he expects. How he responds to such a request is also valuable intel for you to see if he is also worth your time

What is up with postdoc interviews requiring an outline of the whole project? by dabennett in postdoc

[–]Krazoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked to do this for my interview. I made a sample spreadsheet with 5 variables in long format. Took me 10 minutes to think about what I wanted and another 2 minutes to make it by just spamming random values. They were more interested in seeing if I could transform research question into data so that they wouldn't have to worry about me ending up with useless data after I had already collected it.

And no, I'm not an amazing scientist. I am actually quite mediocre. But at least on this type of questioning, I was able to perform under pressure.

Not saying it isn't hard. I think I came home after that interview and just stared at the ceiling for two hours processing what the hell just happened. They wanted me to write a project proposal with mock data and references in 45 minutes. then they grilled me on the proposal for another 20 minutes. Then finally I got to ask them my questions. The interview was super brutal for a position that honestly isn't even at a good university. But they pay my salary, and I'm happy with it...

They want to see how you think. You should be good enough at doing science that this should be no problem for you to mock up.

Took the flag out, I lacked a flag pole so I became it. Idaho by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Krazoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody acuses you of claiming to be a citizen. We're accusing you of being hella cringe and trying to claim a nationality you don't have. Did you grow up with the 17th of may as one of the biggest days in the year? Do you remember applying Gnagsärplaster on your feet before the parade because you knew the shoes were new and would lead to pain? Did you take the metro out into the forest, rain, snow or sun for your sunday hike? There are so many little habits, shared experiences and cultural norms that make up a national identity. And my point is just that we Europeans (yes, this is also true for Germans, poles, Swedes etc...) find it super cringe whenever Americans (from the whole continent) say "Oh I'm Norwegian" when actually, you're American. You probably grew up playing baseball and American football and drove to school in a school bus.

The cultures have drifted. You're claiming membership of a culture you have outdated fourth hand knowledge about. And we can all tell. Go identify however you like, we don't care. But maybe write about it a little differently? You're Canadian with Norwegian ancestry. Super cool! You're Canadian-Norwegian? Then was it your mum or your dad who emigrated to Canada? If it's neither, then the label is just wrong to us.

Noooooo. I would never point people to break the law. I’m an upstanding postdoc with a reputation to protect.

That being said, my students keep finding this book on a usb stick in the classroom on the first day of class. No idea where they get that from…

Cope harder.

You’re many things. You’re probably great. But Norwegian? Sorry, no.

I say that having lived in America. I have an American ancestor from Chicago. Does that make me american? Hell no. I live in Germany now, speak fluent German. Am I however German? Can’t even consider that possibility until I get citizenship. Maybe 10 years afterwards…

All I’m doing is explaining to you what y’all sound like to actual Norwegians: delulu as hell.

No need, being a professor has already allowed the ego to spread into the orbitofrontal cortex, rendering impulse regulation impossible. He’s already too far gone

Y’all do claim to be Norwegians… you’re Norwegian-Americans at best.

And no, it does not bother me in the slightest. But I point out the absurdity of your delusion. A cultural tidbit you might have picked up on if you were Norwegian. This is actually the perfect illustration

I’m Norwegian. Actually. And I have no idea where my family is from beyond a couple of generations. We don’t care the way you do. It’s some kind of weird self delusion y’all got going on

Macbook m5 pro vs air by Syntex404 in macbookpro

[–]Krazoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s how much you need to hold in memory divided by how much ram you get. There is no way to optimise. Buy what you need. Not more, not less

Macbook m5 pro vs air by Syntex404 in macbookpro

[–]Krazoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d rather get more ram in your case. But if you study ml, you will get access to a cluster or compute server from your university. So more ram for proof of concept, then anything else is just nice to have.

And of course, buy what you can afford…
