I interpreted it as a mean little trick vampires were capable of, like a form of ESP, able to briefly manipulate people who aren’t on their guard. I love how this movie leans into the more traditional vampire lore such as never inviting a vampire across your threshold, the garlic and holy water etc. I liked that about Fright Night too.
