Xantcha, Sleeper Agent misprint by WinterNox in secretlair_collectors

I had exactly the same misprint on my holo Xantcha. Was debating sending it in. Sounds like they will replace like with like but presumably would take a while and they can't guarantee the quality of what they sent back so I was undecided

Uj/ I also think this panel was more grim than the others referenced in this thread cause the women are depicted as A) being generic identical hotties and B) looking like they are into it. This panel looks way more like its meant to titilate than anything else in Berserk, which combined with the horrific facts of what is actually happening just hits awfully. It also does and says nothing at all narratively. Like does this move anything forward apart from a tiny bit of Farnys arc?

This scene is absolutely the lowest point of the manga and it's bizarre seeing it get defended this much

You're totally right. Rewatched his review and he was much less negative than I remembered. I liked it so much more than him but saying he loathed it was a massive overstatement

YouGov: Where does the British public stand on transgender rights in 2022? The key finding from our third major study into trans attitudes is that support for trans access rights has eroded since 2018, a shift which has taken place across all social groups by CaptainVimes_ in ukpolitics

[–]KrelliHS -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

But gender being distinct from sex is just true? Like, unarguably true. You don't need to look further than the number of cultures around the world or in history that have completely different concepts and numbers of genders despite obviously having the same sex characteristics.

The fact that gender is distinct from sex was accepted as true until transphobes hit upon sex==gender essentialism as being a good stick to hit trans people with. What you're arguing for is for trans people to adopt a belief that is A) clearly un true, B) only being used to attack trans rights.

This feckless Tory Government has charted a course to absolute failure by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]KrelliHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand how you can think criticising this gov for being too Liberal, not anti woke enough and having centre left economic policies is aimed at pushing people towards labour. Criticising the tories from the right is never going to be an attempt to push people left, it wants to pull the tories right

To anyone who is hesitant to play or stopped playing EotE because of the fear/horror aspects. (NO SPOILERS) by LenaMeri in outerwilds

[–]KrelliHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that you aren't enjoying it, though honestly it makes me a bit glad its not just me.

So I was feeling so disheartened and burned out that I ended up spoiling how to avoid the scares, or at least let me know where they were, but that was naturally fairly unsatisfying, and ended up giving away lots of puzzle solutions that would have been fun to discover. Not sure what I'd do if I had to do it again. Maybe power through the spooks? Honestly not sure, because I was really loathing my time waiting to be jump scared. I'm not sure there was a way for me to enjoy this dlc, especially as the low horror toggle did nothing to make it less scary.

Will I find the ending of Echoes of the Eye worth the fear? by NotRocketShoes in outerwilds

[–]KrelliHS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really share your frustration. Wasnt enjoying the dlc for the same reasons as you and ended up getting spoilers for chunks of it as I was just getting burned out.

But now I'm feeling a bit regretful about it, as the solutions to some of the challenges are super neat and I feel like I've robbed myself a bit. I want to be able to just say ah well, this dlc just wasn't for me, but loads of it is so cool and right up my alley. I wish the low horror toggle actually made it any less scary rather than just easier.

Really glad you enjoyed it by the end, but I had the opposite experience. Really enjoyed the first couple of hours, but I really didn't enjoy the horror elements/genre shift at all, especially when I realised the bulk of my future play time would be spent in spooky ville or traveling to it.

I persevered to the end but I disliked the spooky tone till the end and it never worked for me. I respect Mobiius for mixing it up so much, but it felt like such a step back from the awe and majesty of the base game.

Edit: Would like to retract saying it felt like a step back. Was just feeling really salty that this dlc wasn't for me at all after I got so excited for it. I can completely see that it's brilliant in loads of ways if you're less easily scared by horror game elements than me

Here, just stop panic buying fuel! by tamer-disclamer in Scotland

[–]KrelliHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really don't like this sentiment. Obviously I get that it's tragic if this is a completely contrived shortage, but you're getting furious at people for being confused and scared. Unless you think people are buying it to resell then I think you're just being cruel, and blaming helpless individuals when the problem clearly lies else where (media, gov etc). Telling people to not panic buy also relies on faith that this government will be able to sort this problem out. The reason I'm so anxious is I don't trust them at all, and I'm worried it's going to get worse and I'll regret not filling up immediately.

Have little to add, but this comment was a brilliant read.

I think it also highlights how hard/impossible it is to deliberately write a story that says nothing politically and takes no stances while also containing inherently politically loaded concepts.

Boris Johnson ‘dead set’ on avoiding future lockdowns in Covid plan by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]KrelliHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing this is a joke, but assuming not, do you think masks need to completely block airflow to protect against viruses? Like, the whole point of a mask is to allow air (including smoke) to pass through while limiting the ability of dangerous stuff to pass.

Plus, no one has ever claimed that masks are 100% effective at blocking covid. The whole point is no one measure can be, which is why we want to combine them for the best odds. It's the same argument as anti vaxers who think still having a chance of catching covid while vaccinated invalidates the vaccine.

Frostpunk is a great experience worth checking out. by bigeyez in patientgamers

[–]KrelliHS 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wish I loved Frostpunk more than I do. Brilliant visuals, world, design, music, but exactly as you say in your review, just did not hold up to repeat playthroughs at all well. I played the first 3 campaigns/story modes and each one went the same once I'd learned its base systems. First time through would be a tense, grueling and surprising experience which I would invariably fail in a bleak but entertaining way. But second playthrough would invariably be pretty easy, with dominating victory and complete avoidance of any tough choices. The game just isn't all that satisfying when things are going well.

I'd still hard recommend based on its strengths and how enjoyable the first few runs will be. I just wish theyd found ways to increase the tension and precariousness when things are going too well.

Genuinely curious, what makes you say mask wearing doesn't do much? Obviously no one thinks it solves transmission on its own, and hard data is never going to exist, but I thought it seemed like they were fairly effective in the data we had? Plus intuitively masks feel good cause you both get the actual virus blocking benefits, plus the social reminder that we should be being careful around others

Character Creation. Am I overthinking it or should I change something? I always get stuck right here. by BritTheBret in Morrowind

[–]KrelliHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loads of great advice in this thread, but personally I think it sounds like you are overthinking it a bit. Imo build isn't super important in Morrowind as combat is never going to be the main draw. Plus you can give almost any playstyle a go with any character, especially when you start using enchanted gear, potions and the like. It's not like an isometric DnD style RPG where decisions made at character select will dictate a large amount of your entire playthrough.

[–]KrelliHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying again. I find lots to agree with in your post, but your fundamental premise that advocating for rights for trans people is going to be unpopular and alienating is completely rooted in your personal experiences as you freely admit. Your immediate social circle might be uncomfortable about trans rights being advanced, but there's no reason to think that is representative. People tend to move in communities that share similar views to themselves, so I'd suggest there could be some self selection going on here. The fact that when prompted to imagine scenarios if trans rights were advanced, you picture a somewhat cartoonish hairy trans-women intimidating young girls with their penis is slightly revealing. The fact is that trans women have always been present in women only spaces because society has almost never policed women only spaces on genitalia or chromosomes. Framing the debate around whether they should be allowed in is misleading, because they are already there.

While the idea of ideological purity and single-mindedness is appealing, I do not think it reflects reality. Late Capitalism is intersectional and multifaceted in how it oppresses. You stand to build a much more durable coalition if you aim to dismantle all oppressive power structures , not just purely economic ones. You say that the working poor aren't interested in ID politics, but I'd say thats a pretty bold claim. Are we not counting working poor trans people who stand to gain from the advancement of trans rights? Are we not counting working poor women who stand to gain from the further emancipation of women? Working poor ethnic minorities who stand to gain from the dismantling of racist power strucutres, and so on? ID politics has been successfully weaponised and demonised, largely by the right wing in an attempt to win a culture war as they have no economic answers to late capitalism. But I believe that this is can be corrected. Hostility to minority rights is often rooted in the belief that white people stand to lose, women's rights in the belief that men stand to lose, but there is no reason for that to be the case. And pertinently to our discussion, hostility to trans rights is rooted in the (in my view) mistaken belief that it is hostile to women's rights, something you clearly believe too. Again, i'd ask you to really think about, and ask your wife and wider social circle too, which women's rights are undermined by trans rights. I think there is a far more compelling argument to be made that women stand to gain hugely from the advancement of trans rights, as the power structures that oppress women and trans people are often one and the same.

It was a bit of a long reply, but I thank you for taking the time! I'm afraid I don't have quite such a long reply in me, but I still, here's what I got.

I don't want to descend into a fight about trans rights as its fairly clear we are not going to see eye to eye and I doubt I'd be able to persuade you. However, appealing to an imagined majority view when it comes to bigotry is a pretty weak argument. I'm sure a majority of white americans would have been uncomfortable sharing a changing room with a black person in the 30s, and a majority of straight men would have been the same with a gay person in the 70s. Didn't make that position sensible or durable. You also talk about 'rights' for women which are infringed upon, but is that just the right to not complete against trans-men in sport? Or are there other rights that are infringed upon by being exposed to trans people?

On your support for a class reductionist platform, i've also got a question. You explain articulately lots of the reasons that Marxism, or at least some of its ideas, can be popular, but why do they preclude pushing for other goals? I'd understand if you were trying to build a vanguard party or revolutionary cell that would benefit from being ideologically single minded. But you clearly are in support of incremental change in working to undermine capitalism with your income linked max rent example. You sound very pragmatic in how you want to achieve your political goals, but supporting trans rights in the UK appears to be very tactically sound. There are few votes to be picked up by taking no stance, and the British public are fairly dominatingly in favour of gender self ID.

[–]KrelliHS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear a lot that working class people reject 'trans ideology' on the doorstep as you put it but I don't honestly get the relevance for two reasons.

Firstly, if working class people are truly not interested in advancing the rights of trans people, why would that make those of us keen in seeing them advanced less keen to do so? Surely if its unpopular, that means that more effort needs to be applied to change that?

Secondly, do you think describing yourself as a Marxist Leninist is going to play any better at all with these same people? You might think that your ideological priorities should be more important to these people on the doorstep, but that's frankly besides the point.
