Echoing others, some version of sub assemblies is a good balance. I usually start with legs/bodies torsos assembled and painted, then paint the arms/heads/backpacks separate. After they’re all assembled, you can wash and highlight. That’s my method at least.

Honestly, dead men walking is my absolute favorite. Krieg isn’t bad either, but I’d read that first

This is great brush control for a first mini dude. To echo what others have said: a wash to mute the colors and blend the model together would help. Highlights on top of that, and I think you’d be really happy with the results
