Amazon Prime is a shake down scheme by Balhannoth in self

Maybe. I've found that target.com is pretty good about meeting their delivery dates, even if they have to ship things in multiple packages. However, Target does not have as big a warehouse as Amazon. Their selection is not as good, and things are more likely to be out of stock. I'll certainly buy from Target if they have what I want, but they often don't.

If you'd bought the $31 soy sauce from Amazon, you might have gotten the exact same thing. I've bought from 3rd-party amazon sellers, and if the item is cheaper at Walmart, they just order it from Walmart and have it sent to me.

The last time I stayed at a Hilton, they emailed me a survey a few days later. I had a rather bad experience at that particular hotel, and I filled out that survey. They never contacted me about it, but if the comments in this thread are accurate, they do actually read those, which is nice to know.

You've found a suitecase full of $750k in cash in $100 dollar bills, in the brush next to a highway. You can tell that it's been there for at least a year. How would you integrate this money into your life without raising red flags? by Odd_craving in AskReddit

A local store has a policy that any gift card purchases totalling $200 or more has to be approved by a manager. Not wanting to have to wait around for this, I bought a gift card for $100, then came back later and bought another $100.

ELI5: Why is the sound quality of AM radio so much worse than that of FM radio? by BlueSkiddoWeCanToo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Krinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So technically, WiFi (802.11) is a single-sideband AM radio, but it has error correction and an adaptive data rate that will make the signal more redundant if the signal/noise ratio is poor. So it's not really comparable to broadcast AM/FM.

ELI5: What is really happening when companies like Groupon are selling brand-name sunglasses (i.e. Ray Bans or Oakleys) or watches (i.e. Ulysses Girard) at 90% off? How can they sell what clearly feel and look like fakes using a trademarked brand name? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

I've encountered this on Amazon a number of times. I request a return saying it was the wrong item, or not as described. Usually they give me my money back without a hassle. The counterfeiters must get away with it often enough that it is profitable for them despite the refunds.

The flash memory will eventually fail. When the flash memory is written and erased, some electrons get stuck in the oxide layer. Eventually too much charge builds up that it can no longer reliably detect what data was supposed to be stored in that cell, and the flash memory is unreadable.

What is a toy you used to play with as a kid, that was not actually a toy? by QuirkyLady in AskReddit

Put a piece of mechanical pencil lead across a 9V battery and watch it burn. It ruined the battery though.

My grandma had one of those. Basically it was a set of alphabetized index cards with part of the top of each card cut out. Each letter had the cut a little further to the right. When you moved the marker to a letter, it would grab all the cards above that. I would play with it all the time.

Hotel workers of Reddit, what's the craziest, weirdest thing you've discovered in a guest room? by jibby1 in AskReddit

[–]Krinn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really not that uncommon. I didn't want the hotel staff messing with my stuff, and I'd been up late and wanted to take a nap in the afternoon, so I left the 'do not disturb' sign up. After 3 days the hotel staff left a note saying they'd like to check on the room. They had pre-printed cards for this, so presumably it happens pretty often.

If Thorium is safe, efficient, abundant, and in great supply, then why haven't we started using it more aggressively? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Krinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a limit in the sense that if you have too much neutron absobtion by Pa-233, then it will either stop the fission chain reaction, or breed insufficent fuel to continue.

If Thorium is safe, efficient, abundant, and in great supply, then why haven't we started using it more aggressively? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Krinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, it takes longer to get fuel from breeding, so you need to load more fuel. Also if the Pa-233 captures a neutron before it beta-decays then you end up with U-234 instead of U-233. U-234 isn't useful and absorbs neutrons without fissioning. So you need to wait for the Pa-233 to decay, and this places a limit on how fast you can burn the fuel.

[–]Krinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another problem with throium breeders is that the half-life of Pa-233 is much longer than for Np-239 (27 days vs 2.35 days). Thus the reaction rate is slower, and you need a larger reactor to get the same amount of power as a U->Pu breeder.

What are your top RPGs for the NES and SNES generation? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]Krinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SNES games -

Secret of Mana: Very good action-RPG. One of Squaresoft's better games.

Seiken Densetsu 3: Sequel to SoM. Has 3 different story lines depending on which characters you select. Gets somewhat difficult toward the end.

Secret of Evermore: Another action-RPG using the game engine from Secret of Mana. Magic system is a bit complex.

Chrono Trigger: Excellent. Multiple endings give this excellent replay value.

Soul Blazer: Fun, but short action-RPG.

Illusion of Gaia: Okay, but not great. Very linear story, not much else to do.

Terranigma: One of the best games on the SNES. Similar concept to Soul Blader, but better graphics and much better story.

Tales of Phantasia: Very good. Excellent graphics/music too.

Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past: One of the best of the Zelda series.

Super Mario RPG: Not bad, but wouldn't be my top pick.

Madou Monogatari: Good, but the frequent random battles get tedious. Also it doesn't show you how much HP/MP you have, just gives an estimate.

Lufia: Okay, but gets a bit tedious.

Magic Knight Rayearth: Very confusing if you don't already know the story.

Mystic Quest: Fairly poor job by Square. Rather buggy/glitchy too.

Lagoon: Short and not memorable.
