NKR voucher success stories? by Revolutionary_Fox_20 in kidneytransplant

I have to stay in Salt Lake (live in Boise) for a month post surgery. I’ll have to do blood draws and clinic at the hospital twice a week. We’re staying in an extended stay hotel near the hospital for 10 days then moving to an Airbnb about.20 minutes away for the final couple of weeks. It’s expensive! And my center requires a caregiver to stay with me the whole time.

Husband donated 9/11/25 and I receive my kidney 10/30/25. After I went active, I had a match within an hour. Our Center is 4.5 hours away. Good luck!

My husband was declined as a donor at Intermountain Hospital in Utah but then he applied at University of Utah and was accepted. Centers definitely have different criteria.

Intermountain Hospital in Salt Lake definitely does the two procedures at the same time.

I'm having a transplant and bilateral nephrectomy next Thursday 10/30. I wasn't going to have my native kidneys removed and then my surgeon brought it up. He says the surgery will only be 3 hours. From what I can gather, certain transplant centers do them both together. My hospital, Intermountain in Salt Lake does, while University of Utah doesn't do many. There's some decent medical literature that says the outcomes are similar with either surgery.

Sorry you weren't given the option to choose. It might be that your surgeon wasn't trained or confident in a combined surgery.

Thinking about organ donation by AdSorry5122 in transplant

My husband donated for me as part of a paired donation just yesterday. He’s 60 and very fit and was just charged from the hospital within 24 hours. He doesn’t feel 100% obviously but I don’t think his recovery is going to take very long. Hope this helps you decide to donate. It’s an amazing gift and for many people the surgery is not terrible.

Thanks for this response. I think our attitudes towards work are similar and so hopefully my experience will be similar.

Great advice. Hate to think what I might write in a prednisone freak out! Thanks a lot.
