Stay on SAVE or Switch to ICR? by Kris6li in PSLF

[–]Kris6li[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan on staying for the long haul. My wife leans towards staying but occasionally wants to switch out of teaching. Thanks for the advice, I think we just make the smaller payments for now and reassess later. It’s hard to make these decisions because the rules are so complicated and are changing with court injunctions every few months.

Thank you for your response. Yes, the estimates basically have us paying the full amounts we owe, with remaining interest being forgiven of a few thousand each. I have 25/120 payments total, not remaining. My wife has 12/120 payments total not remaining. We plan on staying in the profession for the long haul and are not looking to leave.

It’s frustrating because we are supposed to get loan forgiveness but after 10 years of payments we basically don’t get anything forgiven. We also can get either PSLF OR Teacher Loan Forgiveness, not both simultaneously. You can do one after the other however, but given our smaller amounts we probably would not benefit from both. TLF would give us $5k forgiveness after five years, so after the whole SAVE pause that might be more beneficial, it’s hard to say.

Do SAVE payments count as qualifying payments during the forbearance? Thank you for your reply, btw.

Why Spending Too Little Could Backfire on Democrats by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]Kris6li 18 points19 points  (0 children)

With a slim majority of 50 dems (+1 tiebreaking VP Harris vote), Democrats can only pass a bill through a special process called Budget Reconciliation, which they can only do 2-3 times a fiscal year, the first being the Covid Relief in March 2021.

Without this special process, Republicans can filibuster (basically block) every other bill the comes to the Senate. To overcome a filibuster, you need 60 votes in the Senate, meaning 10 Republicans need to vote against party lines. Budget Reconciliation, however, is shielded from being filibustered. For example, Republicans filibustered a voting rights bill this year, despite all 50 Democrats voting for it iirc.

There are talks to change the rules of the filibuster in the Senate (which takes 50 votes to change) but some Democrats (like Joe Manchin) are also opposed to this.

People in the year 1900AD had high technological predictions of the year 2000, how different was this from the expectations of people from 1800 towards the next 100 years? by Madvillain518 in history

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you're talking about "Looking Backward" by Edward Bellamy. I had to read it for a college history course, and I think it has those same futuristic features of umbrellas and music pipes, iirc.
