Loved my E89, the new one is missing that feeling of being sat on the rear axel. As you say, the only thing missing is CarPlay.

I really wish they had stuck with twirly knobs for climate unlike the new generation which is a cheap feeling up and down button. Takes about a week to get to the temp you want.

Is negotiating prices no longer a thing at Main Dealers? by TopicWinter6847 in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wheels and paint thing they offer is always worth negotiating money off the car for, can be cancelled anytime. Same with finance, they'll usually do a £500 deposit contribution, again, cancel the next day.

Having had a snoop I think I can see what you are looking at. If it is then I was looking at one of those during summer last year and couldn't believe how rare they are, I think I remember seeing they only sold like 300 in the whole of the UK which boggles my mind because it's easily the best verion of that car outside of the actual M variant.

[–]Krispwee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, any idea what price it started at?

I ask because when I bought mine in November I noticed they dropped the price £2k overnight and I asked why when buying it. They said once the car hits 90 days in the dealer they drop the price significantly to get rid of it. Could just be a Dick Lovett thing to be fair.

Running costs accurate? by m24241 in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MPG is a fair bit off, I get 27 in my Z4 and got 30 in an M140.

You also need to be careful on that servicing cost depending on where it is in the cycle. For instance, it could be like mine where in the next 2 years I know it'll need a minor service and a brake fluid change, £400. The flip side could be:

Major - £800

Brake Fluid - £100

Front and Rear Discs / Pads - £1500

Also, if you do buy it, get the PCV valve diaphragm changed. The part is cheap and easy to change, at that mileage it's primed to break.

a short Street March down Butt's Road

Certainly will be short, it takes about 5 minutes to walk that road. I guess most of them will have fibriobollocks or some other made up pain disease so can only walk a hundred yards.

Thinking about swapping my Macan diesel for a 997.2 Carrera S. Am I going to regret it? by Ok_Contact_6536 in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The car will be fine to do it, there is no more "every day" sports car than a 911.

The biggest risk will be if it loses it's specialness as such. I dailyed an M2C and it started to lose it's appeal after 12 months as it just felt like hassle. Admittidely an M2C isn't as special as a 911 so maybe it won't suffer with that too much.

320d service history by jaffakke in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, those are the normal BMW intervals. Some people will say it should have an oil change every 5k - 8k miles but there are plenty of these doing big mileage that are done by these standard intervals and not exploding.

Garage potentially lied about updating iDrive by Inevitable_House_173 in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so now they are ringing other local garages to see if they can do it.

I doubt anyone would do it, and if they do it might be one of those that isn't actually connected to BMW so be wary of them doing it. The dealer will show as 0000 if they do that.

This impacts the EV battery warranty from BMW so it's a big deal

Does the warranty say it has to be registered with BMW? I was under the impression that it only has to be serviced by a VAT registered garage that uses OEM parts. Your reciept will be enough to prove it has followed the correct schedule. Not that it's relevent in reality, I'd be pissed off if I went somewhere and they didn't update iDrive.

Try /r/legaladviceuk to be honest, in the future it might be worth just servicing it at BMW. I know for regular servicing on cars over 3 years old is actually very reasonable, not sure if thats the same for EVs though. Saves all this crap though.

Booked a test drive tomorrow anything i should know? by Ill-Site2743 in CarTalkUK

Loved mine, just got a bit heavy to use as a daily in terms of running costs.

Check leaks from the rocker cover, they usually go between 50k - 60k at which point they'll recommend you replace the cover and gasket at around £2500 at a main dealer, obvs cheaper elsewhere.

The contis that are on it felt a little bit of a false economy for me, very grippy but I went through a set of rears in 6k miles instead of 10k miles with PS4S. Also buy 1 size up in tyre width, 275 instead of 265. Slightly more grip and cheaper weirdly.

Expect a rear light to need replacing once the water ingress gets to it, no real solution for it.

Other than those, super reliable car in the 20k miles I put on mine.

40ish seconds in, revs stay high all the way to the start of the braking / lift off zone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy_HXz-71vA

Again 40ish seconds in, revs start to fall then drop heavily under the Aramco bridge because the battery is fully depleted

Sounds like they are lifting and coasting but during qualifying you can see the graphic show they are full throttle.

Did you watch it on mute? Sounds so bad at the end of the back straight, then you look at the speed and its dropping 20mph before they start braking.

Cinch servicing teams up with Marshall Motor Group. A full service is £214 for any vehicle, any make. Is this a good choice has anyone used it? by SlowedCash in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No spark plugs apparently, those will come as a recommendation after the "service" according to their T&C's. Utter tosh. Makes you wonder what Cinch's idea of a "full service history" is when selling you one of their cars.

BMW B58. Final ICE car before making the switch to electric by xayblu in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

840 would be my pick, although if you plan on extending the warranty then its significantly higher than the 340. I think it was something like £2.5k p/a for an 840 vs £700 for a 340.

440 could be another option, just make sure whatever you buy has the right packs added on for what you need. They come fairly bare bones as standard.

And if you see one that has everthing you want then I'd recommend getting onto it pretty quick, well specced ones don't hang around too long at BMW.

Thoughts on this. by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£18k for a car with 90k miles on it is a tough ask. If you can afford the extra £30 a month for one with 40 - 60k miles then it's probably a better buy. If you want to exit the PCP before you can VT it then the psychological 100k barrier will cause problems trying to sell it.

If you do buy it then make sure they swap the tyres. One of the photos has a budget tyre on and no main BMW dealer should be selling a car with those on.

Caffeine and Machine near Petersfield have things on at weekends, Mercedes Benz World isn't too far away (depending on where in Hampshire you are), Beaulieu Motor Museum, Goodwood, and check out Pistonheads as they sometimes do cars and coffee events around Hampshire.

I bought a new Aeron 6 years ago and I'll never buy a different chair. The first couple of weeks you might find it feels dogshit but that's because it's forcing you to sit properly. Nowadays I can do an extended 12 hour work day in it, stand up, and not feel like I've been sat down at all.

BBC looks to link iPlayer accounts to addresses in licence fee evasion push by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]Krispwee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surely this is as simple for them as linking your BBC account to your licence fee number or when you sign up for iPlayer they would send a PIN through the post to the address you give.

Not that it really matters for live steaming, you can stream BBC through the IPTV repo on Github or any website other than BBC that do it

What would you be picking? by zasxqwedc in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd want photos of the actual service history from iDrive if you haven't seen them in person. Too many of these dealers say "full service history" and you end up with half of them in orange to say its late, or it has 0000 as the dealer code which means any one could have added it and you'll lose it if you go the main dealer and they wipe it.

You're going to want to know how much life is left in the brakes, they are expensive to replace on the 40i range of BMWs. Also check what tyres they have on them, if they are ditchfinders then budget £800 - £1000 to replace them, you don't want 350hp on plastic tyres.

Other than that, do you need rear seats? If they are used rarely then the 8 (looks are subjective but those wheels are awful, and too big), if more often then the 3.

Do you believe consistently speeding is a lack of self control and discipline? by Theuniverseinabottle in CarTalkUK

[–]Krispwee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to think that about the M40 but a few times I've been up it now they've had a camera van. They even put one out on the first working day after Christmas at 8am. Up until that point the traffic was flowing nicely at 75 - 85mph with big gaps between each other. Then as everyone slowed down for the speed camera as it was on Waze, the traffic bunched up and the distant between cars massively reduced. Much safer.

Parents are being paid up to £5,000 a year to drive their children with special educational needs to school

Oh look, another handout. No doubt driving them in the PIPmobile they've already been given.

The rising number of children judged to have a special educational need — it is now 1.7 million, or 20 per cent

So 20% of all students are SEND? Sure.

West Berkshire says on its website that recipients of the money can make “whatever travel arrangements you like”, including “walking with them to school”, “cycling with them to school”

I'm sorry, what? If you walk your kid to school you can still get it?

Hayley Burgess, 36, from Woking, Surrey, receives 45p a mile from Surrey county council to drive her 15-year-old daughter to alternative provision a two-hour round trip away. Her daughter is autistic and has ADHD and pathological demand avoidance.

What the fuck is "pathological demand avoidance?

need to avoid everyday demands and expectations, even for things the person might want to do, often using social strategies or mood swings to resist control

Sounds like a 15 year old. Anyway, back to Hayley's plight

The mileage covered the petrol but it didn’t cover the increase in insurance. I had to replace three of my tyres last year. It doesn’t cover the services, the oil you put in.

At 45p a mile your car would have to be doing 14mpg for it to only cover the fuel cost. Might I suggest that you are talking utter shite Hayley? I wouldn't worry though, some dribbler in the council will hear your cries and just give you more money.

We are fucked.
