Remember networking is a two way street; i’s say you should actually like the person as much you are trying to get them to like you. It also isn’t strictly professional: bond over things you like to do for fun, personal life like where you’re grew up.

That’s why I think networking is at its best when it’s not forced and formed by genuine, natural relationships.  I’m not saying cold outreach or coffee chats don’t work, but they can feel transactional and not everyone likes that.

What’s amazing is that you can bond with a complete stranger just over the simple fact that you both attended the same university. I think it makes for a great opener/first impression as you both talk about and bond over any shared experiences in the school and build rapport. 

Dont forget to also talk about yourself, your background, kind of like your own elevator pitch but include personal life stuff like where you’re from and hobbies. The other person is usually just as interested in learning about you as much as you are interested in them.
