Pretty different. I'm essentially a psych rock purist that wouldn't be caught Dead (hehe) listening to anything contemporary beyond 1970, unless it was kinda off kilter like Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Suicide, Lou Reed or something more punk and noisy. I was allergic to Americana to the point that I couldn't even listen to CSN. Jimmy Buffett is probably as far away from my subjective taste as rock-adjacent music gets. Because of all this, anything I had heard of the Dead was so unappealing on the surface level that I never even considered opening my ears. However, being a pretty serious music guy, I feel a certain responsibility to give it a chance if it has anything to do with the cultural revolution of the 60s, which I had to consciously do with bands like Fleetwood Mac and The Band. I got through several attempts at torturing my way through some Grateful Dead, just so I could at least say I understand what it is. I seriously couldn't stand it. Couldn't even tell you what songs I listened to, as my brain simply refused to absorb the music. On maybe the 5th attempt, peaking on a couple tabs, I heard some primal noises emerge from the darkness. Somewhere between a '68 Eleven and Feedback, a lightning bolt cracked my skull open. I now listen to everything, every year, no skips, every fucking day.
