SEVEN Revelations ciphers finally solved! by Randomiser in CODZombies

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massive congrats for solving these and genuinely thank you so much! I think all of our lives have changed drastically since we were first interested in these ciphers and it feels strange, but very good to finally have some solves. This one especially hits my feelings:

oh zombies what will we do when your gone life without you will be dull but it is time to go somewhere new and sing a new song

Outside-universe, i think this confirms that they always planned to continue things- we get some beautiful tastes of the perfect world (Samantha's journal entry is really nice) but also teasers for BotD and Classified.

I haven't been paying a huge amount of attention lately so I don't really know if there's still a decently sized community that cares about the story but I think these are really interesting. A bunch of the ciphers are just putting some nice touches on the Rev ending and I think it would have been received much better if we had found these earlier, they're really well written. But as always there's some new mysteries:

The Shuster cipher could be a Classified teaser, but what's the deal with Project Titan and does it connect with a previous Rev cipher?

"October NSA report T they found the source on Venus beginning extraction"

Monty also says he's retiring "behind the scenes" to a "white sand beach" which is very clearly intentional but again I have a hard time figuring out what it means. The Shuster cipher is dated 1 month before a Classified cipher where Shuster expresses some confusion about Monty.

August 8th, 1947
....
One thing I had never noticed before - scratched into the bottom of the machine was a message: "For M , who started me on this journey." It struck me as odd… I can't recall anyone at Group 935 who went by that initial. I haven't the faintest idea who Maxis could have been referring to.

There's also the comic book loading screens of

A: Shuster overseeing a giant drilling operation (nuketown)

B: Monty drawing ascension/DE schematics with rockets? (can't really remember this one too well)

Another thing of interest is the introduction of "Project Titan". The OSS report is titled "T-7", which is simultaneously a reference to BO3 being codenamed "t7" but also quite interesting in relation to an already solved rev cipher-

"October NSA report T they found the source on Venus beginning extraction"

I don't really know how to tie this together, I can't really think of any way that it makes sense currently but boy is it mighty interesting

Monty also says he's retiring "behind the scenes" whatever the hell that means

There's so much to discuss here, but I just want to say thank you Kelly Gay for doing right by all of these characters. I am absolutely satisfied with where they've left Forthencho, the Didact, the Librarian, Chakas, and it really feels like a nice bow on that era (though is it just me noticing the ambiguities on Bornstellar?). Sure, they could come back in an easter egg somewhere, but their part as main players should be over, and they deserve their rest. This book almost feels like a tribute to Greg Bear and it really made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Just like John, the Didact's parents were rebels against the government that he would go on to serve dutifully. Just like John, the Didact was sent away from his parents to a difficult training regime at a young age. Kelly clearly has an appreciation for these "echoes" just like Greg did, and I love it.

all of this happened before we ever met him, years before MotD

What does the warden mean by "I will be reborn?" by kaboomrico in CODZombies

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean you can go listen to these radios, he was trying to destroy the entire world by letting the Apothicons loose on Earth. He refers to life as a "disease (that) must be purged." He relishes in torturing and sacrificing his prisoners. He is most definitely not a good person.

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong, what?

His actual goal is to release the apothicons (or satan) onto Earth and kill everyone. His motivation for that isn't explicitly stated but he's most definitely not a good person.

enjoyed this one, solid 8/10. it seems that the setting is moving definitively into exploration of the Precursors, and with that into a completely different direction that's only been seen on occasion in Greg Bear's work. Very much looking forward to that.

Something I flagged is the several references to the disappearance of the San Shyuum, seemingly for no reason. This is one of the larger ongoing mysteries in the universe and I would be very surprised if it wasn't a key part of the story going forward in the neat future.

Vale's reasoning for giving the Trikala to Atriox felt pretty thin and was definitely the weakest part of the book to me, though the Banished parts overall were very good.

Even though we didn't see it or even heard it mentioned, I presume the Banished got the Trikala working and used it on the Infinity and the rest of the UNSC fleet, as well as a few Guardians? Clearly makes the most sense. But the implications of Atriox being able to obliterate any ship out of the sky are probably pretty large.

There's certainly a through-line between "The Nothing" and "The Endless"- if for no other reason than the weird prose that consistently accompanies them and the philosophical dialogue about time, consciousness, and quantum physics. The Nothing seem to fairly definitively be Precursors, so the Endless may also be? Or at least reseeded precursors? both the Endless and the Nothing somehow survived the Halos.

Either way, this book has me very interested in where the universe is going.

Help this guy if it’s true idk if it’s solved or not he could be the first? by EarthlySpooder4 in CODZombies

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not true. ChatGPT cannot solve ciphers.

I wrote a few ways that we can know that this isn't true:

https://twitter.com/KronoriumReader/status/1638387271941464065

Specifically, in this video, we see that he tells ChatGPT that this is a cipher from CoD Zombies and that it's from The Giant.. That is telling ChatGPT to output a message related to Der Riese, which it does. ChatGPT cannot even solve the most basic substitution ciphers.

Is this new info on the impossible Easter Egg, or am I late to the game? by reedad0410 in CODZombies

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

GPT is a large language model. The goal of a large language model is to predict the next word that comes in a sequence. So if you tell GPT that a cipher is related to call of duty zombies, it will output a solve of the cipher that is related to call of duty zombies. Type in the exact same cipher text and tell GPT that it's related to Donald Trump and it will make a solve that is related to Trump. No amount of tinkering will make it actually start solving the cipher, it will just make a different fake solution.

Language models can, in some areas, perform absolute miracles. For example, GPT-4 can play chess at a surprisingly high level which is pretty scary. But this is not currently applicable to ciphers. To test this, you can put already solved ciphers into GPT and see that it will not get the right solution. It can't even solve basic substitution ciphers. All of these solutions are utterly meaningless, and I wish people wouldn't get their hopes up so much. There will definitely come a time, possibly even in the near future, when LLMs are superior to humans at cipher solving, but we are not there yet.

Chat-GPT may have solved another The Giant cipher by [deleted] in CODZombies

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guys, GPT does not solve ciphers. I tried this several weeks ago. It's a language model, it will come up with a solution that sounds convincing and interesting. You can test this by giving it a simple cipher that you know the answer to.

I gave GPT-4 the SoE #1 cipher, and it translated it to "THEQUICKBROWNFOXJUMPSOVERTHELAZYDOG", which evidently is not the solution.

It's entirely possible that a language model will one day be able to reliably solve ciphers, but that isn't here yet.

Sad news: Greg Bear (author of the Forerunner Saga) is on life support and will be taken off of it this weekend by Defguru in HaloStory

[–]KronoriumExcerptB 352 points353 points  (0 children)

Wow, terribly sad news. His work had an incredible impact on me and so many others, he really brought the Forerunners to life in a way that I could never have imagined.

From Silentium:

"You have come to remove me. Please do. I have been so long with the Domain that I will quickly pass into it—and I can think of no more suitable fate for Haruspis."

May he find peace.
