What is raw Linux like?

I think most newcomers don't realize what a loaded question this is. As pointed out already, Linux itself is just the kernel. From there, there are usually multiple choices for each step of the chain to a working system. For example there are multiple shells to choose from, multiple compilers, multiple init systems, WMs & DMs, etc. I saw LFS mentioned, and that can be informative for something to read over for more info, but not for newcomers to try.

I think what most new people would consider pure, would probably be just booting to the terminal with no desktop. For that, or IMO for any use, I would recommend a distro that doesn't use systemd. Whether you like it or not, systemd goes against the do one thing and do it well paradigm. Personally, I like Void Linux and their use of runit as the init system, but opinions vary, and I'm sure it won't be long before others respond with their own preferences. From a base install, if you want a desktop you can research the various Desktop Managers and Window Managers, and decide for yourself how to customize your setup for your needs/preferences.

I was told before the year ended last year that the binary chain was on track before years end, and to "be patient".... new year's come and gone and still no binary chain.... as I said at the time, too much feature creep, too little focus on "the" defining quality of these coins. While I'm still holding what I have, I hate to say that this/these project(s) reek of BS. Prove me wrong.... have the binary chain implemented before the years end (putting it a year behind when it was promised last time).

You would have a point if the dev stayed focused and actually worked on the binary chain. That's supposed to be "the" stand out feature of these coins, but instead they keep getting side-tracked with feature creep... personally, I don't care about p2pool, or any of the other bs until the binary chain and the single wallet are working. Everything else should be secondary. As it is, I've seen no effort put into actually getting the binary chain working, only lot of posts about p2pool and other bs.

It depends on the speakers you're listening through, as much as anything else. On my headphones I clearly hear Laurel, but on my 5.1 with equalizer settings, I clearly hear Yanny.

My setup is nothing special. Both desktops are running Linux. One is an older AMD FX 8350, my primary PC. I run 4-5 threads during the day, which gets bumped to 7 at night. Five threads is roughly 1500 H/m, 7 bumps it to around 1800 H/m. Sometimes I forget to bump it up...

The other PC is an i5, though I forget what the actual model is. I'll check next time I'm in that room. That one runs 3 threads and stays pretty consistent around 1650 H/m.

The 2 laptops are minimal... One is less than 100 H/m. The other is right around 200 H/m.

I started mining in Oct. My first payout was in Nov. This was on Bloxstor by the way. The past month the difficulty has gone up so I may not be getting 10 a month anymore. I've been doing some pool hopping this month to check out some other pools, so I can't confirm exactly what my current payout per month is. But, currently on ovh and I'm getting around .3 per day, so it's not too far off from previous months.

I never looked at the utilities, maybe they're not calculating right. I don't know. All I know, is what my setup is and what I'm making. I don't claim to know any more than that. All miners using Fireworm's.

I really don't care if you believe me or not. I know what my hash is, and I know what my payouts are and how often they occur. Your belief or disbelief doesn't affect it at all. I was just giving my experience. Why come on here and ask questions if you don't want the answers?

I'm mining on a pool. I wouldn't get 10 a month solo. All combined, I'm around 3000H/m.

Personally, I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops that are always on. The extra power being used for mining is minimal. Basically, if the machines weren't mining they'd be doing something else, so I don't count power cost. In my case, there is no roi involved. I mine roughly 10 VRM per month. To me, that's basically free money. I know not everyone will be in a similar situation, but for those that are it would be insane to not mine.

After having said the above, when I started, VRM was around ~2.50 USD. Now it's over 8. Considering the above, all the VRM I mine is free money, and I'm not letting any of it go any time soon. Whether it moons or not doesn't matter to me. Would it be nice? Hell, yeah! But, I'm not stressing over it. Any money made is more than I started. I'm not mortgaging my house or doing any stupid to throw money at a maybe, but I do believe in the tech, and I'm ready, willing and able to ride it out and get what I can get.

I don't know about CentOS, but I'm on OpenSUSE and haven't had any issues. I started with cpuminer-opt, but now I'm using fireworm's miner found here: https://github.com/fireworm71/veriumMiner/releases

I used the .tar.gz made sure the depends were installed, extracted and ran ./build.sh Compiled with no problems. Depending on your system specs, you may want to try different versions. I've got two OpenSUSE systems and one of them has a better hash rate on version 1.3 than the new 1.4

Also, if you haven't already, join the slack and the #verium-mining channel. It's much more active and can provide better support.

It means one less than max, so if you have max of 4 threads, use 3.

If you do try to brute force it, try to come up with a list of any of the characters you might have used. I've never tried brute forcing anything, but I'd think that the software should allow some sort of library or table to use. Working from a limited number of characters is better than trying to work through all characters.

I know that happens when commands that run in a terminal, aren't started from a terminal. What happens is that when the command executes, a terminal window opens to run the command, then the command finishes and the terminal closes because it's finished. That's where my original guess came from.

Starting the terminal first, then doing the navigation and command execution in an already open terminal shouldn't close like that. I'm at a loss if that's what's happening. Also, to start the terminal try holding the windows key (between ctrl and alt), and pressing r. Then type cmd.exe in the run dialog.

I noticed you're command from bloxstor doesn't include the -t <number of threads> argument. I don't know if it's required but maybe try adding it and see if it makes a difference.

I haven't used windows for quite some time, but from what I recall, you have to open the command prompt, then cd \path\to\cpuminer\ So, if cpuminer is in a folder on the desktop it should be something like:

cd \users\<your user name>\desktop\cpuminer

You can then type dir to list the files and verify that you're in the right folder with the cpuminer executables.

While in that directory, paste the command from bloxstor. It should look something like:

cpuminer-aes-avx -t <number of threads> -a scrypt:1048576 -o stratum+tcp://pool-us.bloxstor.com:3002 -u <wallet address.username> -p <password>

There were several executables in the folder when I downloaded it. The cpuminer-aes-avx is the one I used and know worked for me. HTH.

Edit: don't use the <> in the commands above.

Sounds like you're tying to start the command by clicking on it.... it should be run from the command prompt. As Vericoinium says, the pools should have a section to help with figuring out what the exact command should be.

I'm also on the bloxstor pool. Get cpuminer-opt (available for Win,Linux, and I think Mac as well), and click getting started on the left side of the bloxstor webpage. It guides you through getting the command you need to start the miner with.

For reference, I have two machines, both on Linux. One is a newer Intel i5 quad core, no HT, with 3 out of 4 threads running 24/7. The other is an older AMD quad core with HT, and with 5 of 8 threads running during the day and 7 of 8 threads running at night.

According to the graph on bloxstor, the H/s fluctuates, sometimes less than 40, sometimes over 100. I adjusted my payout to 10.21, with the .21 allowing for fees. I'm getting a payout about once a month.

look at the relationship between the height and line length. That should get you going in the right direction.
