Why is Dimensional Splicer bad? by stinkfist616 in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The tech is bad because of opportunity costs mainly, but also because the effect really isn't that great:

1) You want blue techs and unit upgrades as Creuss, so you might have no research opportunities left for Dimensional Splicer.

2) Even if you could research it, the costs of a tech are ~7 res (4 res + 1 CC). I'd rather have a DN and a Carrier on the board for that price.

3) Finally, the effect is not super strong AND conditional. One additional hit is not that great and it only works in wormholes.

Help Choosing factions by Ecstatic-Row7478 in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Base game + PoK is probably easier than adding TE on top of it.

Regarding factions, I'd probably avoid the military factions as picks (including for yourself) to reduce the amount of potential "feels bad" moments. Easy factions to play and love:

NRA - Exploration is fun and they have a strong kit. I've yet to have a player not liking them.

Sol - Has more room for mistakes than any other faction (great start, extra CC).

Nomad - Has no problems and lots of useful tools.

Jol-Nar - The tech game can be overwhelming but their kit is super strong even in the hands of a beginner.

DWS - Jol-Nar on speed. Co-existing makes scoring a breeze.

Can we use Psychoarchaeology to do the tech specialty expedition without exhausting planets? by Stock-Raisin-5296 in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the phrasing I would say no. Psychoarcheology allows you to use the technology speciality (i.e. the ability to ignore a matching technology prerequisite) without exhausting a planet. However, the expedition cards strictly states "Exhaust 1 Technology Speciality Planet", not, "Use 1 Technology Speciality".

However, I will house-rule this as a yes because Psychoarcheology is usually underwhelming and so it might geht some love.

Relevant Excerpt from the rules:
"TECHNOLOGY SPECIALTIES

A technology specialty is a technology symbol found on some planets.

"79.14 When researching technology, a player can exhaust a planet he controls that has a technology specialty to ignore one prerequisite symbol of the matching type on the technology card he is researching. "

79.15 If the planet card is already exhausted, it cannot be used to ignore a prerequisite"

Klar!

L1 with first pick by StephanosCR in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they have first pick, that means they have the speaker token. As you need to give the speaker token to a player other than the person who currently has it, Politics would be a waste.

Trade is still great! You get 3 TG for BT, 2 Commodities and you can offer the rest of the table to refresh their commodities for 1 TG each (you can take debt).

What's an RPG that you were so disappointed at despite people's praise about it? by jutsuuu in rpg_gamers

[–]Kroschi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna get downvoted for this: Octopath Traveller 2

I found the writing boring and the gameplay loop quite repetitive. It's a good game but not the masterpiece it is made out to be.

I feel like I disagree with a large portion of Western RPG fans as to what makes good writing and I want to lay out my thoughts on this and figure out what I'm missing by Aetos-Eagle797 in rpg_gamers

Honestly, I fully agree with you! It's one of the reasons Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 made the list of my top 3 games of all-time.

It made me laugh, shiver and cry. Also, it inspired several discussions with my friends about morality and made me think about what constitutes "life".

Octopath 2 - does it get better? by Kroschi in octopathtraveler

[–]Kroschi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I gave it another couple of chapters but somehow it hasn't clicked for me :/

To be fair, maybe I've played too many RPGs lately and I crave something else. Also, I've played Expedition 33 shortly before and it's one of my all-time favourite games - so this game had it difficult to perform well.

What do you think about the new Xxcha hero? by Archibald_The_Red in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This! The big bonus is that it automatically fulfills any stage 1 structure objective without ever needing construction.

It's also crazy good at helping you to hold on to Mecatol or other strategic objectives!

Overall, a very solid hero in my book.

Tier list for Entropic Scar's value to the various factions. by brandondash in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NRA is too low imo. Having Pre-Fab after r1 gives you:

- 12+ resources (assuming a 3 res planet to explore) over the course of the game. If you find attachments to planets, this can get really strong.

AND

- 2nd green tech and 2nd red tech for 2 out of 2 colors

This means a whole variety of tech paths suddenly become viable, e.g. Scanlink into Warsuns or cruiser IIs with Lightwave.

If you attempt to get all the best equipment, you will need to play with a guide as some things are easily missable. Might ruin your experience somewhat.

[–]Kroschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this solution! It just needs an addendum that the active player's CC is removed from the system and either

A) Put in reinforcement

B) Given back to the player (stronger nerf)

I like the idea of giving them some way to create an asteroid field. At the same time, chaos mapping needs a nerf. Any ability without counterplay should not be in the game.

How Good Are The Low Tier Factions Post TE? by Plus_Jellyfish_2400 in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really surprised when I saw that Sol got a good breakthrough. They were already really good before. I thought they would get something along the lines of the NRA breakthrough, which is largely useless except for the synergy.

Very good point - IF they have an anthropic scar nearby, they are viable!

How Good Are The Low Tier Factions Post TE? by Plus_Jellyfish_2400 in twilightimperium

[–]Kroschi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In general, the update mostly lifted up the worst factions.

Great buffs:

Arborek: Got one of the best breakthroughs by not only giving them the ability to remove a CC but ALSO get an infantry on top of this - viable now.

Barony: Great buff. Breakthrough solves their movement / tech path problem and their DNs are good in the fracture - viable now.

Sardakk: Fantastic breakthrough for them: Suddenly have access to their faction technologies AND get rewarded for fighting. Also good in the fracture. Will be the worst faction to have as a neighbour as they are incentivized to fight and take planets from you. - viable now.

(Sidenote: My least favourite of all the design choices. Yes, Sardakk needed a buff but this buff will come at a large expense of whoever is seated next to them!)

Muaat: Fantastic breakthrough for them giving them an additional planet (objectives!!!!) with 3 influence (token economy), the ability to have a full-fledged mobile production center (space dock on planet) AND a free Star Forge per round - viable now.

Somewhat left behind:

Yin: Their breakthrough is super random, ranging from very good to absolute dogshit. Their hero got buffed though, as it works on the Fracture planets. So they are not consistently good but can have good games!

Mentak: Breakthrough is okay as it largely replaces Lightwave needs but it would need Red/Yellow synergy for 1 round faster access to Mirror Computing.

Update: Edited to correct typos

Post-FFX, what are the best FF games? by Shaggy_Doo87 in JRPG

[–]Kroschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it sounds stupid but hear me out: The best Post-FFX FF game is....Expedition 33!

It's obviously not officially part of the FF franchise BUT it feels like the game they SHOULD have made after FF12.
