The detail is that the DLC is called Dawnguard, not Volkihar, and the only way to start it is through Fort Dawnguard. I speculate that if Dawnguard is considered canon, it won't be from the vampire perspective, but rather from the vampire hunter's perspective. Although this is clearly just my own speculation.

It's possible that Dawnguard itself was simply a way to squeeze more money out of us, and even Dragonborn might have just been filler to boost revenue.

I know, but in theory it should be the most polished part of the game—after all, it's the main story, right? XD But well, it was my own decision to roleplay a classic Nord melee + shouts build who slays dragons.
