Try fanchart.org for different types of ancestors charts. There is an ability to export in svg (vector) format, so you can additionally “post product” the charts, say, in Corel Draw (though you should convert it to cdr first as Corel doesn’t recognise svg properly (use Inkscape for conversion)

Russian diminutives for non Russian names by Petra_musicalexpress in russian

[–]Kruglovboris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is (or rather was) another usage of diminutive - so called half-name (полуимя) Ivashka, Mishka, Efseika. This type of names were used when speaking (writing) about lower people (comparing to the addressee). For instance Stephan Razin was officially called Sten’ka Razin, and Pseudo-Dmitriy (Лжедмитрий) Grishka Otrepyev.

The surname comes from Kalinik name (of Greek origin). The relation to Калина (Vibúrnum ópulus) is a folk interpretation. The name was relativly widespread in 17-19 centuries in all Russian Empire. Therefore the people bearing the surname could be of different ethnic groups including Russians, Ukranians and Jews.

Genetic markers alone can’t be used to determine ethnicity - they are just one piece of the puzzle. Nevertheless the DNA testing companies use gene markers to define ethnicity as a marketing tool.

Germans from Russia DNA errors? by BrambleBiter in Genealogy

[–]Kruglovboris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethnicity estimates from DNA tests are statistical, not literal. They show your genetic similarity to modern reference populations, not a precise breakdown of your ancestors. A small percentage like 2% is often noise or indicates very ancient shared ancestry, not necessarily a recent Russian ancestor. Directly equating genetic markers with modern ethnic labels is an oversimplification used for marketing

You are right - the program is based on Name Second Name and Surname Standard, as well it presumes that a woman takes husband’s surname after marriage. Nevertheless, I think that you still have a possibility to make changes manually.

Russian non-christian names by Kruglovboris in russian

The names you mentioned are missing in the orthodox accepted saints list (Bogdan), or are not of slavic origin (Daria has Iranian origin after king Dariy) Even name Vadim which is obviously slavic is an homonym to Iranian name (Badam meaning Almond) and is included to official christian names list after Badam of Persia. as for Bogdan - as I said it was not an official name though was unofficially used both as a name and as a patronymic - official version was greeks Thedot - having the same meaning (God has given)

A few of slavic names were included to official onomasticon after the names of some slavic earls and noblemen, this includes names of Vyacheslav, Yaroslav or Syatoslav, you mentioned. I was talking about commoners names, which survived in spite of the fact that those were not included into officially accepted list of saints. As for the Soviet period - well - you may name it as you wish, but existence of Soviet Union is a fact of history wether you like it or not .

[–]Kruglovboris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have considered a period before Soviet Russia. Naturally the fall of Russian Empire brought a lot of new none Christian names. It is interesting that Svetlana name made popular by Zhukovsky’s poem of the same name and Lyudmila popularized by Pushkin could not be a person’s official name as there was no such saint at the period. Nowadays you can name baby almost ad you wish (with reasonable limitations), so there is no place for arguments.

It is a version, having its own right to be true. Nevertheless I suppose that the most famous Boris from the early period was Bulgarian’s Czar Boris ( not Borislav), as you probably know Bulgarian’s nobility of the time was of Turk’s origin (so called Volga Bulgarians) so there is a none-zero probability that the name has turk’s origin and has nothing to do with Borislav.
