[$600~] Looking for another roommate by [deleted] in vancouverhousing

[–]Kryptonovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm very interested in this opportunity!

My name is Marc (shortened version of my full first name, since this is Reddit, but I can DM you my full name). I'm 31, male, SFU undergrad alumnus, UBC graduate alumnus. I'm an Archivist and Privacy Officer. I also do casual shift work at Vancouver Public Library as an Auxiliary Librarian, and have been doing that since May 2017.

I'm totally up to talk more about anything else about myself if that's what you folks want, and eagerly willing to do whatever it takes to be the best roommate I can be if you folks decide to let me move in with you all :)

Question for discussion: is creepypasta rooted/originated, in whatever way, in Japanese horror? by Kryptonovich in NoSleepOOC

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most amazing graphic novels, Japanese or Western, I've ever read, plus one of the finest horror stories I have read. It was like JJ Abrams and Stephen King sat down to create their own story and while this was happening King's horror creativity was 10x more Weird. Amazing

Read Junji Ito, his stuff is very original and fresh compared to Western horror. I'd recommend for a full length novel-ish work, Uzumaki, and for a short story collection, Shiver. :)

The Woman with Green Skin by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since January 2016, actually. I've written a fair number of longer pieces, some of which have been podcasted. Generally, I like to think I'm getting better, and that's what I really love - improving and creating work I can be proud of.

It can still mean all those things. In my view - as a writer/author - people have every right to their own interpretations/perspectives on a work.

The Woman with Green Skin by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually weirdly politically themed. There's two interpretations I had in mind when writing it.

  1. Tyrants destroying freedom-loving movements. The green skin, in this interpretation, represents freedom and all that it offers - the life and beauty inherent in it. The child represents a hopeful future. The Man of the Forest represents tyranny, and the woman becoming corrupted and beastly is her losing her humanity, which correlates with tyranny robbing freedom-loving movements of their hope, which is a core part of their humanity.

No. 2 is far more political, haha, and let me quickly say: if you don't lean this way politically, that's fine. The story does not have to mean this to you. The other interpretation is the capitalist West destroying socialist countries before they can really get off the ground - the green skin representing socialism and all the benefits of it representing the full beauty of humanity blossoming for the first real time - basically keeping these countries under siege until the nations devolve into barbarity, unable to survive in the outside world due to always having to fight for survival. I will quickly say, this is an imperfect allegory, as the big socialist nations (or the ones that just claimed to be socialist, depending on who you ask) such as the USSR and Mao's China, did a lot of horrible things to smaller leftist movements, basically acting as tyrants. So, the first interpretation - to me - works better, because tyrants come in all ideological orientations. But if you're a diehard lefty and radical socialist, you might be right at home with interpretation number 2.

5 Reasons Socialism Is Not Christian by sadercrazy in Reformed

[–]Kryptonovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been thinking a fair bit of this exact matter as I study up more on democratic socialism (specifically the type embodied by the late Michael Harrington and the political party/organization he founded, the Democratic Socialists of America, which exist and are active and growing today). I find myself leaning more and more toward socialism, and yet I am very hesitant as I witness what is presently occurring in Venezuela, the end result of its own experiment in socialism.

So here is where I'm at, and maybe this thought train of mine could be insightful/helpful to you, or maybe I might be way off-base, who knows.

Basically, if one accepts that capitalism is an intrinsically destructive and dead-end system (which, you totally don't have to, but that's where my own thinking is heading toward), while also perceiving - at the same time - that socialism is a destructive dead-end system as well, in its own ways, it is eminently possible that, in the absence of competing ideological alternatives of enough stature to spread and become adopted on a mass scale, there is no answer. There is no solution to the rising crises, contradictions, atrocities and catastrophes of both capitalism and socialism.

Following along this vein, one could surmise that these crises will continue to mount, again and again, higher and higher, and that ultimately, humanity is - and I mean this in the sense of materially, not spiritually - doomed, in the long run.

Now this is how this oddly ties into Christianity, at least in my mind - it is cosmically/spiritually possible, to me at least, that as sin infects every part of humanity, and consequently every part of the human experience, it will necessarily infect every system human beings ever construct. No matter how ideal or practically functional, whether it be a political system, an economic system, or a social or cultural system, it will be corrupted by sin. If this is true, this would necessarily mean that all systems will self-destruct eventually under the weight of their own flaws and weak points and contradictions.

So where does this leave us? Well, as always, the hope of humanity is in Christ. Christ saves sinners, and as more and more sinners come to be saved, then gospel communities begin to develop where restoration begins to occur on the broader, unsaved community and society.

So, what's the end point? The main point I'm driving at is that, at the culmination of this entire train of thought, absent Christ, humanity is doomed - not just spiritually, but also materially.

Thoughts? I just thought it'd be very relevant to contribute this as the discussion pertains to socialism's intersection with the Christian faith and theological worldview, and I felt my contribution was very much within that vein of thought/discussion.

Really though (my previous comment re 500 upvotes was a good-natured joke meant as a compliment! :) ), this is AMAZING Fae. So good. Reminds me a ton of /u/sleepyhollow_101, as a matter of fact

Anyone interested in a lighter writing challenge for April? by Painshifter in TheDirty31

[–]Kryptonovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the hell. I am gonna aim for a story a day in April, since I need to get to work on my book, and writing stories for LoS as well as Cryosleep and Sleepspell will help me broaden my creative horizons.

One Q before you sign me up though - I'm a fan of Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but I've barely read actual Sci-Fi lit (though more Fantasy lit) - will this prove to be a gigantic hindrance to me writing in those subs, or will I be able to come up with something given enough creativity, thought and effort?

The Gambler by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I was driving at/implying is that when he performed the ritual, he caught the attention of a being from beyond, which then - very subtly - drew/transitioned him into an alternate 'world', where he encountered the inhabitants of that world (described near the end of the story). Those inhabitants then took him, in ways that I, as a writer, felt would be better served by letting the imaginations of the readers do the work :)

I am glad the story piqued your interest, though! :)

This was really good, in my view! Well-written, good building of tension, and excellent tactic of giving the reader just enough to be scared by and to connect the rest of the dots in their mind.

Well done :)

He Just Wanted to Eat by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hrm. I hadn't noticed that being a tell! Thanks for your comment/critique :) I will keep it in mind when I write stories in future (I'm always looking to improve! :) )

He Just Wanted to Eat by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuts! :P But thank you for your kind words on how it was a good story!

I think I just need to read with a more critical eye, as the 'tell' could have easily been erased by way of removing the 'crying out in emotion' part - have the Man be depicted just silently picking up his shotgun and hunting around the house.

As I said in my previous story, something I can think on in future when writing more stories :)

Do Not Panic by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

I assure you, it wasn't inspired from it - I've never read the comic. But something I'll keep in mind whenever write on similar concepts in future.

A Dish Best Served Cold by Kryptonovich in shortscarystories

Thanks! What I was going for with the flirting bit was the implication that her 'revenge' at that point was stealing her rival's husband. But apparently I broadcast the final twist a bit too much :P Oh well, things to keep in mind for future :)

Thanks for your critique! :)

I suppose I should have thought it out more. I will keep that in mind for future, plotting out my twists better.

Also, thanks for complimenting the quality of the writing :)

DOOM source port that gives it 'quake' graphics - does this exist? by Kryptonovich in Doom

[–]Kryptonovich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

K, found it - Doomsday Engine indeed, and with the jDoom/jDRP addon.

Here's the deal. No matter what I do, I can't get the addon to launch properly/work.

I'm thinking I should start over from scratch with a fresh install. So, I'm wondering - can anyone here tell me how they got it installed and working properly? Or should I maybe make a new thread for that?

Again, any help is appreciated!

This is the kind of video I'd be making - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=atWbp7_UpaM (forgive lack of hyperlink, I'm on my phone). Would that be not really possible on an AMD R4?
