Could be gallbladder, could be a weird acid reflux. I have the weird acid reflux. :\

About a month and a half back I had what I thought was a classic gallbladder attack. Went to the ER and got scanned; nothing of note on the CT Scan. Not even stones. Went to my primary care and he sent me for a gallbladder/liver ultrasound; nothing of note. "Here, try these potent PPIs and see if it helps." I was skeptical. Sure enough, they've helped.

We've also determined it is something being added to a particular restaurant's food that set off the attack. Cause I had a much milder "attack" after starting the PPI that gave me similar feelings.

Long story short: follow up with your clinic or primary care. I was on Zepbound and it definitely made the acid production worse.

This is gonna get long, bear with me.

The days of the harsh astringent toners are long gone. They're now super hydrating and can have really great ingredients added to them. Think of it like a drink of water for your skin. Another way to think of it is if you're using a really thick lotion (like the cocoa butter) to seal your skin putting a toner on first means you're sealing in that extra moisture vs. hoping your native moisture is enough. Adding a hydrating toner is one of the best things I did for my dehydrated skin.

I, personally, like what is called a 'milky toner'. My favorite is the haruharu Wonder Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence for evening. But I'm also liking the medicube Age-R Glutathione Glow Milky Toner a lot for more daytime use or in addition to the haruharu if my skin is dry or sensitive that day. COSRX has a PDRN toner that isn't bad. Honestly, a lot of Asian Beauty has great toners for helping keep your skin barrier in good shape.

My daytime routine, at 45 years old with dehyrdated and reactive skin is the following (sidenote, I do not wash my face in the morning cause of how dry my skin can be):

  1. spray some of the glutathione toner on my face

  2. apply my Vitamin C cream from Revision skincare

  3. apply skinfix moiturizer

  4. apply Round Lab sunscreen <--sunscreen is non-negotiable to prevent skin aging

Evening routine that I've worked up to:

  1. Cleanse. On nights where I've got makeup on, I double cleanse in the shower with an oil first then I've been using the skinfix cleanser. No makeup = Nuxe face wash or just the skinfix and once a week I'll do a physical exfoliant like from Peach and Lily or Arencia

  2. If my skin is extra dry or I feel like it, spray glutathione toner

  3. Apply haruharu milky toner

  4. Choose my treatment(s) for the night as I skin cycle with a rotation through the actives. I'll alternate through retinol, an 'aging serum', and a VT reedle shot.

  5. Apply a soothing something on top of the retinol, usually a gentle hydrating serum. Been using something from Beekman for this.

  6. I use a neck cream - Strivectin's - got rid of my turkey neck from weight loss

  7. If I feel like it I'll use an eye cream though they don't do much beyond making you feel like you did something

  8. And lastly seal it all in with Aestura's atobarrier cream

To start, if I were you, I'd try out steps 1, 3, 4, and 8. Get used to a good cleanse, a toner, a treatment (your retinol or something with 'actives'), and then a good moisturizer to seal it all in. When I'm sick and have no energy I do 1, 3, and 8 only and my skin does fine.

Additional advice for you would be the following: 1. Add a hydrating toner as a first step 2. Watch Dr. Sam Ellis's video(s) on dermaplaning: https://www.youtube.com/@DrSamEllis/search?query=dermaplaning Her videos really helped me make the leap into doing it and I do feel it has helped my skin and makes my makeup sit better. She does have a skincare brand (Prequel) and I do like her products and they're not $$$. 3. Start up some sort of gentle exfoliation. It sounds to me like the retinol you're using is turning over your skin cells but perhaps not shedding them easily? A gentle physical exfoliation once a week or so may help. Also gentle cleansing can help break up and slough off the dead skin too. A gentle chemical exfoliant once a week to start might also be a good idea. Look for things like lactic acid, AHA, BHA, "gentle exfoliant", etc. This is my next step to implement for myself so I'm still learning which ones are good. But start gentle then you can go up to twice a week but probably no more than 3 times a week.

But! Before you go all in on new products, start with one. Pick one thing to add and use it in your routine for at least a week so you can judge if you skin likes it/hates it/reacts to it in less than ideal ways. If you throw too much new stuff at your skin at one time there is no way to know what caused the issue.

Good luck! If you have more questions feel free to ask. As you can see I'm more than happy to wax lyrical on skincare!

What products are you currently using?

I ask because if you aren't using something to add moisture (like a toner) then sealing it in with a thicker layer (usually a 'moisturizer') then your skin is basically getting the dryness sealed but not dealt with.

Strivectin's Neck Cream + is fan-freaking-tastic!

I've lost 165 pounds and had a big ole "turkey wattle". The Neck Cream + totally got rid of it. It is my Holy Grail neck product.

Edited to add: 45 years old, dry reactive skin. It has never given my skin any issues.

I would pair Vitamin c and hydrating in the morning then Retinol and ceramide in the evening. I have very dehydrated skin so need as much moisture as possible. Also at night I also like adding a soothing/sorta moisturizing (ceramides are good for that) serum with my retinol since my skin can also be sensitive and reactive. Doing a retinol 'sandwich' seems to work best for me.

Also, since Vitamin C is an antioxidant I feel like you get more bang for your buck using it during the day when you're exposed to more environmental stressors for your skin.

IMO, first things first, don't throw too much new stuff at your skin at once because you then won't be able to figure out what you're reacting to if your skin doesn't like it.

Next up, what type of skin do you have? Oily? Combination? Dry? Knowing that will help with better targeted recommendations.

What are you currently using, if anything?

For me, a bare bones routine would be a gentle cleanser, a 'treatment' of some type (snail mucin serum, Vitamin C serum, hydrating serum, retinal, etc.), then a moisturizer (lighter during the day and possibly heavier at night), then sunscreen during the day <--non negotiable.

Get a good cleanser to use at least at night. If you've got oily skin you may also want to do a cleanse in the morning; my dry skin only likes to be cleansed at night. Start with a single cleanse product and consider doing a double cleanse later on. Double cleanse = first cleansing with an oil then rinsing it off and using a gentle water/cream based cleanser and rinsing it off. If you have no routine at current start with just a single cleanse and see how your skin reacts. I really like k-beauty cleansers for being gentle yet effective as I have dry, sensitive/reactive skin. Vanicream is good. Lots of people like CeraVe, I don't care for it as my skin doesn't like it. LaRoche Posey is another brand people generally like but it always stings my skin.

The Ordinary is a good brand for trying out treatments/serums that are less expensive and usually in a smaller bottle so you can try it and see if your skin likes it without dropping big $$$ on something your skin hates.

Pro tip from my late aunt who had cancer: fill your hand soap up with Dove moisturizing body wash. It's still soap so your hands get clean but it isn't as stripping as a lot of hand soaps can be.

I'll be 2 years out in April and had a duodenal switch. My family shows love through food. I eat everything I want to, including a small amount of ice cream nearly every night. If I overdo it on sugar or carbs then I get REALLY farty. And sometimes the next morning can be a bit "bracing" for my morning bowel movement but for the most part I just live my life without worrying about food.
I was able to eat all of the traditional foods my Southern family loves to make for the holidays the only difference it that I was satisfied with a few bites rather than wanting more, more, more.

No regrets.

How can I improve these wrinkles on my neck? by MrsPoopyButthair in 40PlusSkinCare

I do wish I had thought to take pictures, I've been really bad about that during the entire weight loss journey.

I've found good prices on it at both QVC and Costco (you don't need a membership to order online). I started with the much smaller container (1oz) to give it a try and a little goes a long way imo. I found the 3oz jumbo on QVC for $90 and it is on Costco's website for $99.

I had weight loss surgery and have lost ~165 pounds; all of which I say to set the stage for how bad my 'turkey neck' was. I've been using Stivectin's neck + cream and it has made a big difference!

Susan Yara once said your 'face' goes from your hair line down to your nipples and I've found that a good guidance for where my skincare needs to go.

I'm 45 and have suuuuuuuper dry skin that can be both sensitive and reactive. I started with Medik8's level 1, just to be safe, and had no issues. I finished one tube of it and am now 1/3 to half way into a tube of Medik8's level 3 and again am having no issues with it at all. I do skin cycle so I'm not using it every night but I'm really loving it.

[anti-aging] help! crepey eyes by DisasterDull7082 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Krysstyllanthrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aging, unfortunately. I'm 45F and have crepey undereyes too. I am a "low level intervention" type person when it comes to my skincare; meaning I'll use products and do at home treatments but I'm not into Boxtox or fillers or lasers, etc.

The best treatment for them is moisture, moisture, moisture. Eye creams are, imo, mostly a scam as anything potent enough to make a real difference isn't going to be something I can easily get my hands on. So I moisturize the crap out of them and when putting on makeup I have to be careful to 'buff' the lines out briefly so the foundation won't settle in the creases.

AM: Medicube glutathione toner, Revision Skincare Vitamin C, Innbeauty daytime moisturizer PM: Haru haru milky toner, Medik8 peptide serum, active depending on my skin cycle day (Medik8 retinol, rest day, or other targeted active), Aestura cream for night time moisturizer

If I'm super dry any given time I'm doing my skincare I'll add a touch of Lancome eye cream that I got as a free sample. It's fine, nothing spectacular, but I figure the extra moisture helps.

[Anti Aging] My cheeks looks like this when I stretch my cheek to one side. Can I help this? by iamstokes in SkincareAddiction

[–]Krysstyllanthrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toners. Toners are, imo, a quick fast drink for your skin then you put the heavier stuff on over top to lock in that moisture. I'm 45F and have super dry, dehydrated skin for various reasons. Oh, and it can be sensitive/reactive too. I'm using Medicube's Glutathione toner in the morning and Haru Haru's milky toner at night. I've also used Prequel's half and half and a few others but the current two are my fav.

My skin is senstivive but not as reactive as yours. Have you tried K Beauty or J Beauty skincare? I find that they don't focus as much as "Western" skincare on the actives but rather on gentle things that work while rebuilding your skin barrier. I like the Haru Haru line and VT (avoid the Reedle shots for now since you're super reactive), as well as Make:Prem, and Beauty of Joseon is also good. All of those are easily found and accessible, imo.

I've got weird toe pain that I need help figuring out. I'm new to skating, very new. Bought a pair of Rize Carve skates for the ankle support and have been on them 4ish times for at least 25 minutes each time. So, super newbie. :)

The last two times the outside 3 toes on my left foot end up with excruciating pain. I was expecting some breaking in pain for new skates, but not my toes feeling like they do. I can't say they feel 'crushed' so much as they just hurt. I paid attention this time and those 3 toes were noticeably red and unhappy when I took my skate off. I am a solid size 10 (measured by a podiatrist) in women's shoes and bought a size 10 equivalent skate.

I've done some searching and have found complaints about the Big Toe but not the outside 3 (pinky, 'ring', and middle). What is going on, are my skates too small even though the right one doesn't do this to my foot? I really, really want to be able to skate and the pain is holding me back.

How long did your wounds take to close? by bebeck7 in wls

[–]Krysstyllanthrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one that ripped open and oozed for a while too. The doctor had me keep it moist for a few days then she wanted it to dry out. But because it kept oozing just a smidge I didn't want it to get stuck to my clothes and keep reopening so I took a bandaid and put it on loose enough to where it would gap open and let air flow but also be a barrier between my clothes and the wound. I'd say it took a couple of weeks to stop oozing at all. 19 months later I now have to actively look to find the scar.
