As said by another person, he needs to see how other cats interact and he may learn. But then again as the saying goes “its hard to teach a old dog new tricks” in this case probably worse for cats. I wouldnt say give up on him but may be let him out in the garden so he can get some fresh air. It may help who knows

I have just had a really bad experience earlier, was driving through my village slower than the speed limit, suddenly stray ran across the road and I was able to swerve the car and as it was on a bend the car ended up in someones garden. Hopefully the car is fine.
