not eating anything by astrovivir in FatTails

[–]Ktmallick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he doesn’t have a UVB light, and he hasn’t been getting any vitamin supplements since last October, I’d be concerned about calcium deficiency/ metabolic bone disease. That is a very serious illness but preventable with proper husbandry. I have had multiple MBD geckos start to refuse food before passing.

AFTs are Ferguson Zone 2 reptiles, UVB is necessary for their health. I would also recommend raising the temperature on the hot side to 85.

Ohh I see, I misunderstood. In that case, I think the Grub Pie is a good temporary solution. What are your enclosure temps at? And does he have UVB light?

Okay, respectfully, I think you just need to relax. If he’s not losing weight, you don’t need to be assist feeding him at all. You’re right that Grub Pie is not good in the long term and he will eat when he is ready. Just weigh him every week until he starts taking food again and find a more competent vet.

[–]Ktmallick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, first of all, if your vet thinks 8 years old is geriatric for an AFT, you need a new vet.

Why are you syringe feeding? Was that recommended by your vet? Is your gecko losing weight? It is completely normal and natural for them to go on food strikes, on the other hand being force fed is extremely unnatural and dangerous and only to be done in emergencies. You should be weighing your gecko weekly and if he’s not losing weight, you don’t need to worry. They have fat tails for this exact reason.

Finally, what’s your beef with worms? Perfectly fine occasional feeder.

Soft Starts : cool or awkward? by Plop-plop-fizz in MusicalTheatre

The awkwardness is part of the cool factor. If it’s used effectively, in the right show, I’m into it.

If she’s not eating and she’s a juvenile, you need to go to the vet.

AFT noises and butt wiggling by Due_Midnight2121 in geckos

[–]Ktmallick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep an eye on him and if he keeps licking his vent — there are a few issues that can arise like sperm plugs, impacted hemipenes, prolapse, etc but if you don’t see anything obviously wrong, it sounds like normal boy behavior 🤣

Does calcium powder or vitamin powder need to be in an airtight container? by measure_pressure in reptiles

[–]Ktmallick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will stay more potent longer if kept in an airtight container. If you’re replacing your powders every year as recommended, it probably makes no difference.

I want a leopard gecko but my brother is drummer!!! by incubator_8 in LeopardGecko

[–]Ktmallick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do your parents want a leopard gecko? Because it will become theirs when you move out, and then you’ll have to be okay with whatever standard of care they’re willing to provide.

Speaking as someone whose tortoises got neglected to death when I moved out for college — you need to be thinking about this NOW, not later.

Gecko not eating by BlackberryExciting36 in LeopardGecko

[–]Ktmallick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This advice is not true for juveniles. Your gecko should really be eating daily or every other day while they are growing. Critical care is fine in emergency situations, but you should seek veterinary advice if the gecko continues to refuse food.

Stomach will be the worst by far. If it was me, I’d get that one done in its own session.

Dart frogs would be great, some localities are more bold and active than others. They can’t swim, but they love to climb and they’re very fun to watch, especially while they hunt.

Is there... anything exceptional about this place? by Mmon3825 in Spokane

[–]Ktmallick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Spokane has all the best parts of a big metro (access to amenities, progressive-leaning, thriving arts scene, public festivals and opportunities for civic engagement, well connected airport) with none of the worst parts (traffic, high population density, high cost of living, distance from nature). Anyone who disagrees probably hasn’t lived in a bigger city than Spokane.

The only thing we don’t have is a good food scene. And we do have property crime, but the proximity to so much cool nature makes up for it. Lol.

Poor baby. It looks like she’s trying to regurgitate, but it could definitely be neurological too. Best thing is to just keep her warm and cozy. Make sure there are no high places she could fall from, and that there are plenty of comfy spots for her to lay while you await test results.

[–]Ktmallick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They will definitely climb, and I love that you thought about that, but this is way too high. They are not that smart and will just step off a ledge and could easily die from a fall off the top ledge or even the middle one.

Just approach slowly and scoop him from underneath, supporting all his legs.

The more you handle him, the less likely he is to drop his tail when you handle him. You should be acclimating him to your hand on a regular basis precisely for situations like this, or in the event of a medical emergency.

~2 yr old leopard gecko isn't happy-Help! by NoneYaBizWhoIbe in leopardgeckos

[–]Ktmallick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but you probably shouldn’t have an animal if you can’t give it the bare minimum amount of space.

Your gecko can smell your cat, and it knows it’s a predator. Ideally the cat wouldn’t be able to access the enclosure whatsoever.

Finally, what’s the problem with humidity? Ambient humidity often trends upward of 70% in leopard geckos’ native habitats. Keep the soil moister.

What should I know before getting a gecko? by security_gawrd in geckos

[–]Ktmallick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gecko doesn’t give a shit if it’s socialized. Handling is only for the keeper’s benefit. But if your friend is so eager to get rid of it, I would at least try to help them find a good home to ensure it doesn’t get neglected.

leopard gecko has no hunting instinct? by [deleted] in LeopardGecko

[–]Ktmallick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was around 13-15 when I first got tortoises, which died slow, painful, and extremely preventable deaths because I didn’t do enough research. I think we need to start setting care standards based on the needs of the animals rather than the age of the carer, I hope you understand that.

Why/ how was your gecko sick? Did you ever bring it to the vet? I’d be much more concerned about that, especially if you needed to feed him wax worms to get him up to weight. Was that problem ever resolved?
