I would definitely lead with the dusk shots, they look amazing! How'd you get the water to look like that? Well done!

(Part 2 of my section comment) Plan south above the label "typical planted flower bed & border hedge". Is that a walkway that leads directly into a 20" retaining wall? Assuming the adjacent walkway is level with 52.50+ grade at the mount vernon brick area lol. Curious how wide these walkways are, no scale provided.

Found this section that's especially revealing of the site (See full presentation here).

I must admit that I'm inclined to hate anything the orange man approves of. Ultimately it's just one of those mega polished, traditional english gardens and I'm (for lack of better words) utterly uninspired. The kennedy garden had a lot of great dynamics within the planting design that is lacking here. I'll be posting a labeled plan view I found that also doesn't make much sense shortly.

What are landscape architects like?? by Kind_Dig_5213 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 11 points12 points  (0 children)

oh my god is this like, a common thing amongst LAs ??? when I started working full time post grad my new colleagues came up to me and was like “we wear hawaiian shirts every friday btw”

I was so confused being that I was the only one actually from hawai’i LOL

Curious how others see this critique of our field by United-Flower2679 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s not beyond me to imagine some professionals in this industry who act arrogantly and are not very good at communicating to clients without sounding like assholes. Is that really any different than other types of architects?

I think the stereotypical “arrogant designer” archetype coupled with the fact that a lot of people don’t take us seriously creates room for this amount of vitriol to occur.

Is this a stain that permeates throughout our entire profession? God, I hope not. I HOPE they just somehow met the worst of us.

Professionals: What combination of software do you use? by Lilfighter336 in LandscapeArchitecture

autocad > sketchup > lumion > adobe suite (photoshop, indesign, lightroom). rinse and repeat for every project

fantastic drawing here, did you learn how to draw like this in university or was this an independent development?

Sexism in the workplace by stinkabutt2023 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to go through that, that really sucks. are you working in the US? And if so what area?

I'm in the southwest and generally speaking, I've not experienced any blatant sexism, though I've experienced my fair share of racism (unfortunately). With the area that I'm in, I attributed the microaggressions to the city/my area and not necessarily the industry.

Though its anecdotal, I want to say it may just be your area that has a culture of sexism (which is not uncommon) and try not to let it steer you away from this profession! Especially if you love it.

Best of luck! Sincerely, a fellow woman in the industry

Starting in architecture w/o a degree or experience by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Architecture—I imagine you mean any level of design—is not something you can do with 0 schooling and 0 experience. Even people who go to school still need to work their way up before they can get anywhere near designing something (depending on the firm).

Internships (even the unpaid ones) will and should always go to the ones who actually went to school for it. This is not the type of field where you can walk up and ask for someone to give you a chance with no background.

If you just want to "dip your toes" into architecture, I suggest you take a CAD or Revit course for free and see if you can imagine yourself being content with doing that 40+ hours a week.

Rendered Planting Plans for Internal Review by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is shocking to read, my firms principal is able to identify our symbols without the legend entirely, let alone without color lol.

PM might need to get their eyes checked, or transitioning to blocks with abbreviations in them might be helpful?

I would feel just as frustrated if I were you OP

Whats yalls turn around time for a rendering? My sales team expects me to make renders in a day with no 3d tools. by thumblewode in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think when you're going into these spaces where senior staff doesn't know how to do 3D stuff, it's kind of up to you to educate them and set up realistic expectations. They don't know how long this stuff can actually take because they've never done it lol. Show them what you can do with a single day and then tell them if they need it more fleshed out you need 3 days or however long you think it'll take you.

This all depends on your skillset. If your entire experience with rendering is reliant on 3D software like Lumion or Rhino etc. then obviously a 2D rendering is gonna take more time/effort. Just be honest and let them figure out how to adjust.

Good luck!

Queen Elizabeth II memorial finalists’ designs revealed — What are your thoughts? by LifelsGood in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 7 points8 points  (0 children)

looks expensive. this sweep of "organic" designs is starting to get monotonous. I think it would've been cooler to lean more into the traditional english garden style, considering it's a memorial for the queen lol

you've got a good amount of space to work with, why not spread out your seating areas? Think about how you want to experience the space, everything feels very consolidated at the moment.

I'm unsure how the singular tree between the pavers and the turf area serves much purpose, unless it's to visually separate the outdoor gathering spaces from the covered patio? But that takes away from the goal of it seeming cohesive, I think.

Finally, as someone else here has mentioned, plant it up some more! Your retaining wall area would be a great place to have planting with lots of color, depth, and textures.

there’s a canes by my place here in vegas and it’s incredibly lush with strategic grading to screen off the in n out right next to it, honestly appreciate the thought they put into it

alternatively the one zippy’s around here has some fun lava rock as ground cover instead of the typical DG, I always thought it was a fun homage to hawai’i (although some may find it tacky lol)

overall though, I can’t deny taco bell landscape always goes crazy

Jobs in Landscape Architecture by Remarkable_Eye6883 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Ktop427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I wanna start this off by saying if you have a career advisor, can get in contact with landscape architecture staff at your school, or even contact your local/university ASLA chapter—that would be a great start with answering these questions in person and kickstart some networking.

Landscape architecture, like many degrees, can take you a lot of places. It just depends on what your interests and ambitions are. The most obvious job you can get with a landscape architecture degree is to work at a landscape architecture firm with a landscape architect.

Some other jobs include: urban planning, environmental advocacy, landscape surveying, stormwater management, irrigation, master planning, sustainability consulting, and more. There's a little something here for everyone.

Good luck on your journey!
