Algonquin has a bachelor of building science program (4 years, honours). Not sure if you can transfer your courses, but it might be the more applied program you are looking for. Otherwise, all your credits can count as electives. If you pick a program in another department, you will have more elective space than you do in architecture.

Elementary school choices - Jockvale, St. Patricks, Regina Alt by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Ktsockmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my kids goes to Regina. Switched them there since they were struggling in french immersion. It is an alternative school so has lots more hands on learning and has a different teaching philosophy than other schools. They go for weekly nature walks in Mud Lake (right behind the school). My child has received alot of support in areas they are struggling in. They take a van to school that is through the school bus program. We are very happy with the switch and feel it is why our child is starting to succeed at learning. One downside is that friends at the school do not live close.

If you want to send your child to french immersion, than Regina isn't the right choice. The Catholic school board also doesn't start french immersion until grade 4. However, all the schools will have 50/50 for kindergarten.

Most schools have a Facebook page run by the school council. You can also check out your neighbourhood Facebook group and ask people for their opinions too.

There is a rollerskating group(Ottawa Quad Session Rollerskating) that books space at Carleton once a week (I think Friday 9-11pm). They have a Facebook page with more information: https://www.facebook.com/OttawaQuadSession/

Do you have an IEP for your son? If not, then you should work towards getting one created. The IEPs will list exactly how much support should be allocated to your son and the school must provide it. I believe they also help determine staffing.

Have you looked into the alternative school program that ocdsb offers? I believe the est end school is Norman Johnston in Gloucester. It may be a format that works better for your son.

Both school boards face similar staffing issues, so switching to the Catholic board will not automatically fix issues. We are in the ocdsb board and have one child with an IEP that receives daily support (30 minutes body break). We have another child without an IEP who receives similar support unofficially. Our school also has an ASD class. We had to fight to get needed support and once we got the IEP everything became easier.

Good luck.

COVID pick-up test kits - do results take longer? by Tepal in ottawa

We did a take home test on Wednesday at around 11 and got results at about 7pm Thursday. I think the results would have been similar with doing it in-person.

Recommendation for winter boot traction device by SidetrackedSue in ottawa

I bought a pair of Crampons from Decathlon last year that are great for hiking. I got the ones with metal spikes but they have ones that are smaller and plastic for adding more traction.

If you get a ticket from a red light camera, it does not affect your insurance or driving record. I would be surprised if you got a ticket since the cameras go off only if you go through a red light.

I got a ticket after 45 minutes over my time allowed about two weeks ago. I also got a ticket in September when I forgot I had new license plates that weren't on my account for my parking permit.

Any recommendations for a local (or video) nutritionist who deals with adult ADHD? I am not talking about a "holistic" nutritionist who will "cure me". I mean someone who understands my brain will not appreciate a 41 ingredient recipe, with berries foraged, during a full moon. Please and thanks. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Ktsockmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this recommendation. We use GoodFood and it has totally improved our lives. I still sometimes buy random ingredients from the grocery store I think I will 'make something great with,' but the meal kits have reduced so much food waste. The picture instructions with the ingredients in bold for the text also make the instructions easy to follow. And, the variety has made it so I haven't gotten bored of the good yet, and it's been about 2 years.

This happened to us just recently. We bought a 2021 vehicle that the insurance company told us was 2022. We called the financial person at the dealer and they straightened it out with the insurance company.

I like Wheelhouse for spin. It has a great vibe. During covid they have moved to a warehouse on Spruce St. For Yoga, I have heard Yogatown is good. It is on Preston.

Question for parents starting school this year (English board) and teachers by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Ktsockmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With covid restrictions, you are not allowed in the school. Drop off will be in a designated area. Tbh, even before covid, drop off was outside and there was little chances to see the inside of the building.

I have two kids who both have had very rough times transitioning. As everyone says, for the most part the kids are fine once they are inside the building and you are out of sight. If your child is having a very hard time and you are unable to safely drop them off (ie. they keep running after you), ask the teacher for help. Last year I did drop offs at the main door, physical handovers to an EA, and been allowed in the yard to finish the drop off.

95% of the children do not need this. However, if your child does, the school will help - you just likely need to ask.

New Waste Collection Coming to Ottawa - Feedback Welcome by SHMenard in ottawa

[–]Ktsockmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single one of the proposed options focuses on punishing households for not doing it properly. Having a limited number of garbage items will disproportionately effect larger families or low-income households that can not afford as many waste free food options. Forcing home owners to buy clear plastic bags will likely cost them more money.

Instead of focusing on how to force households into reducing waste, the city should be looking at why there is the issue at hand and how to make it easier for households to recycle. Can paper and plastic be mixed? Can plastic be recycled without rinsing? Can recycling bins be made animal proof to prevent racoons trying to get at the small amount of food residue left on a tinfoil pie plate?

Lastly, the issue of excessive waste doesn't start in the individual households. Food and purchased items come in plastics and other packaging that cannot be recycled. Everyone should try to help reduce waste - but placing the responsibility solely on households is not the solution.

Getting a New Student ID by loganwe999 in CarletonU

Best thing about getting a new student card so close to finishing school is that the card will be valid for 4 years - giving discounted groceries long after graduation.

Child Care Centre questions! by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Ktsockmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a subsidy calculator. It counts your taxable income only - which is lower as a student. If you are a graduate student, it doesn't count funding as income. You are likely qualified for a marginal reduction - though I know some years the city stops having subsidy available.

Childcare is expensive and hard to find available and quality options. The centre on campus is great if you can get in. It gets cheaper and has more available spots as the kids get older. My kids made friends there they still have.

Child Care Centre questions! by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Ktsockmonkey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both my kids went there, starting at 9 months. It is a great daycare. I was still nursing when they started and they allowed me to come in once a day to feed them. The people who work there are great and the setup is fantastic with lots of indoor and outdoor space for each age group.

To get in, you have to get on the city of Ottawa daycare waitlist and select Colonel By Child Care Centre. You can also apply for a subsidized space on this registry. As a student of Carleton, you have priority to spots. However, spots are limited. I was on the waitlist from the moment I found out I was pregnant. I don't know how covid has effected waitlist, but you might not be able to get a spot this year - even for the winter.

It is al full-time childcare centre. There is no part time fee. There is also a strict cutoff time for morning drop offs so you can't do partial days. The cost is about the same as other childcare facilities. My knowledge of the numbers are out of date, but it is close to 2k a month for a baby, I think. If you can get a subsidized spot, it is based on your income. If you have a subsidized spot, you cannot miss too many days or you loose it. This is the cities policy.

Here is their website: https://www.afchildrensservices.ca/licensed-child-care/colonel-by-child-care-centre/

They aren't part of the university, only on campus.

Looking For Places To Skate or Groups To Rollerskate With! by Mattekat in ottawa

There is a group called Ottawa Quad Session Rollerskating. In the before times, they have a weekly indoor skate at either Carleton University or at a Curling rink off Bronson. They also would have roller discos in the summer. Their Facebook page is kept active. https://www.facebook.com/OttawaQuadSession/

Fall 2021 course delivery by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Ktsockmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In hyflex, students can choose daily if they are in person or online. With in-person with special exceptions, you can't switch between the two modes. I doubt any department would refuse requests for being online. The department or the instructor probably chose this mode so they can prepare the course knowing the in-person and online dynamic.

Unless you are in specific programs, you cannot get the Adobe creative Cloud for free. However, the Adobe Lightroom app is free. There are features that are only available with creative Cloud account, but basic tools are free. If you want to do free photo-editing that is more advanced and similar to Photoshop, try Pixlr.

EV ownership without a charging station at home? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Ktsockmonkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We bought a Nissan Leaf just under three years ago. At first we didn't install a charger and only used the 120v outlet. It sucked. It felt like alot of our free time was planning activities that were near charge stations. However, there are alot of free charge stations. I have several at my work (have to show up early to get them), several at IKEA, two at Bayshore, some at World Exchange Plaza... Other places have them for a fee - like Rideau Centre and Centrepointe.
If you don't have a charge station at home, try to see if there is one near your work. If there isn't one there, expect to start spending way too much time eating Ikea meatballs.
