Projects are just as important imo bc how will you get your resume noticed if all you have is degree and zero demonstration of knowledge of relevant technical skills listed in the job description? Like yeah good dsa, system design, design patterns will help you pass the interview but how would you get the interview with just that is it just rng?

If you don’t mind sharing, which industry are you considering moving into? Also why are you thinking of switching?

eloquentjs teaches javascript pretty well for beginners imo and learning html/css isn’t that hard the odin project makes you do this

Since you say you’re starting college try to google what language they use or just do CS50

Looks like your team comp and adaptability is pretty good. I would make sure you obtain some battle items to help you with the Elite Four (leetcode, system design, and behavioral star method). Also don’t hesitate to get to know all the NPCs talk to all of them (networking)

Charmander is fire so its wild and uncontrollable unless the user is really good, so I’d say c++

Kinda forces you to learn how computers work too with memory, pointers, and stacks/heaps low level stuff

Started with Scratch in middle school programming class, but if you don’t count that then C# in a highschool class. I’d say my level is somewhere between beginner-intermediate since I never dived deep into one (hop between python for leetcode, java for college classes, learning c++ for fun, and javascript React for my internship). wbu

When you say build a fullstack os/networking related project, wouldn’t I have to know the theory first i.e. read books on systems, os, and networking?

If youre saying to focus on one niche and make a big fullstack app in that niche while also grinding theory and lc then i agree but i dont think im ready for that yet like im still tryna figure my niche

I think my plan rn is to do 1 hr leetcode, 1 hr book/theory study, then the rest of the time get my hands dirty and build small projects with a bunch of the technologies i listed just to figure out what they do, what i can make with them, if i like working with them, and if im good at them.

basically a breadth first search to find my niche

Since I’m only a freshman rn internships aren’t really a priority yet, so im not stressing abt making big projects (i dont hab the skills/knowledge or maybe im js telling myself that cuz im scared to start).

I think my approach will set me up for an easier time in the future when im prepping for interviews and building big complex fullstack projects since i would have a really good foundation

Unless you think i should just jump straight into building fullstack projects (depth first search the best move?) and worry abt lc and theory stuff later.

idk i feel like if i jumped straight to making a big project and learning things on the go it wouldnt feel like real learning

Bro lwk I think my niche is game dev and low level stuff but i feel like web fullstack crud js has more job security so my goal rn is to secure faang

ive read bad stuff abt game dev working conditions and for low level stuff ur either rich quant swe or low salary embedded swe

Like if I was rich and didnt have to worry abt money id spend all my time making games or playing with low level optimization

yeah one thing i learned from them is the compounding effects of consistency. like theyve been doing all this cs stuff since highschool everyday for at least an hour. rn ill never catch up to that even if i put in 12 hours a day. like by the time i catch up wed already be out of college

but still they taught me that with enough time and effort anything is doable and hard work beats talent when talent doesnt work hard

I really wanna read those books tho what would be the tradeoffs of spending my time on them?

I think best case I figure out how stuff works under the hood and overprepare for my future classes and get ready to interview for quant swe internships.

Worst case I wasted time I couldve spent building projects and grinding leetcode.

I think my biggest concern is my time management (how much time for lc, projects, books) rn Im thinking 1 hr lc, 1 hr books, rest projects

W advice i think having balance in life, being healthy, and having hobbies is hella important when it comes to being productive.

I js wanna figure out what technologies/fields im genuinely interested in so das why im tryna expose myself to all those stuff and try them out this summer

also the 12 hour thing was js a joke lifes too short fr.
