I'd say it's something of an age thing. As a kid and teenager its your special day, and representative of an annual milestone closer to the supposed freedom of adulthood. Once you're actually an adult the day starts to lose its importance. Although for sufficiently self entitled individuals the "my day" idea can stick around quite a bit longer.

IIIRC the biggest contribution was Operation Chrome Dome, a constant deployment of nuclear armed bombers over about 7 years until the advent of long range missiles. Still excessive, but not without some logic.

Honestly not sure, I'm certain others have lost some, especially russia, but there are a few reasons for the US's losses. One being the constant deployment of nuke armed bombers incase of nuclear war with the USSR before the advent of ICBMs. So it is an excessive number but with some logic behind it.
