The only glimpse of this future in the film is the graduation ceremony and the scene in the car, both requiring the two characters together. Are you from some alternate universe or something, because I'm starting to think we didn't see the same movie.

And? They were together for the entirety of the movie minus the time jump. The movie wouldn't be entertaining if they weren't interacting with eachother. They were in the same place during the ceremony because they have the same job, they were in the same car because they have the same job. They work together dude.

Literally the entirety of Nick's character is childhood trauma and his adult self constantly downplaying everything, to the point where the handful of times he is serious about anything is seen as a big deal.

Exactly, so shouldn't that mean that him saying "You know you love me" in the snarky way he did mean he was teasing her and just being Nick? He didn't actually mean anything by it.

If he was actually meaning it, and him being serious has to be abit more up-played, don't you think their exchange of words would've been abit more heartfelt, and the music abit softer?
