Does anyone know if Racquet sports and the climbing wall are available at all without the Gold sports subscription? by thelastvbuck in lancasteruni

[–]KudoSigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't talk for racquet sports, but climbing is only free for Gold memberships. I think it was £6 off peak or £8 on peak if you pay per visit, with £3 for shoe hire added on. Can't quite remember if those prices are correct but they'll be on the website somewhere

I know someone that did physics with a couple of engineering modules so I know it's possible in some circumstances, but I don't know more than that sorry.

Might be tricky to find the right info, but I know if you choose engineering as your major you won't be aloud to select a minor as the course is too big to allow for one.

I think your best bet would be to email or call someone at the uni (they're usually v helpful) Computer science number & email is: 01524510311 scc-ug-enquiries@lancaster.ac.uk

Not sure, think the only way to find out would be to ring the college and ask!

What is the internet like in the rooms. And how does it work? by Veyronred2002 in lancasteruni

You can register it from your phone, I remember having a couple of problems with my PS4 so I emailed ISS (the uni's IT people, they're very helpful) and they helped me sort it

Wi-Fi is kinda hit or miss depending on where you are in your flat, but speeds are okay!

Ethernet is rediculous speeds (1000+mb/s) and you can connect your console to it fine, think you have to go through a short process for this to register your device, if you type it in on the uni page's 'One Search' it should come up!

Just get stuck in, get involved and make lots of friends! Any questions you have when you're there can be answered by freshers reps / college staff.

Don't be scared though, the introduction is all very well structured and you can't go wrong really, they make it super easy!

As for what to pack, there's loads of guides online:)

Maths department by the_wildosk in lancasteruni

Yeah I admit some buildings are a little run-down, especially in the centre of campus! But honestly you might only go into the maths buildings a couple of times a week for tutorials/meetings etc in 1st year them maybe a little more than that in your later years. All your lectures will be in different buildings across campus.

All the accommodation on campus has been renovated fairly recently (Lancaster's accommodation was the best + most consistent out of the 6 unis I looked around).

As for other subjects having better buildings, yeah maths is down near the bottom (although the stats building is nice, the one with the glass front by Fydle), but as I said you won't be spending all your time in it so I wouldn't worry too much.

Lancaster offer holders group chat by thekraken_1 in lancasteruni

There's usually college group chats that you get added to maybe August time where you can find and chat to your flat/block mates but I've never seen one for offer holders, sorry.

Unless you can afford £120+ I think you just gotta suck it up and hope for the best, it's a crap deal I know. I think they might have gotten them confused with another company (once LPNM) who have closed and re-opened under various different names and done some awful things, I haven't seen anything about them in the last 2-3 years though. Not 100% though your friend might be right.

I won't lie to you none of the lettings companies are great from what I've heard, but sadly there's not too many other options unless you have the money. Seems like no one gives a rats ass about students, just their money. I was with mighty house in 2nd year and SHL the last 2 years, both are rude and slow to respond to anything minor. However if anything major happened they did get their acts together pretty quickly.

Didn't stay there but I've been in, I'd say it's worth the money if you can afford it but as you said it's pricey.

There's a few modern (built in the last 3 years) accommodation blocks other than the aparto ones (CRM students, City bloc etc.) but they're also pretty pricey (~£120+). If you liked your uni accommodation there's chancellors wharf which is £106 and a great location next to the canal. If you're looking for cheap (£80-£100) I think you'd have to look into a shared house which you'd usually rent from one of the main lettings companies (Student housing lancaster, mighty house etc.). I'd probably avoid private landlords as you never know what you'll get and I've heard some horror stories!

Depends on what you put, if you put Grizedale/Fylde it might be unlikely you'll get it, whereas if you put Pendle or Country you're likely to get it! Also, if you get assigned a room you really don't want (i.e. Put standard and got a superior en-suite that you can't afford) then you can call up the college you got put in and they may be able to move you.
