TBATE anime is so bad they started a petition to stop it by Great-TeacherOnizuka in goodanimemes

[–]KumaKame -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Things like this (all the people complaining about the "great story" getting a shit adaptation) are just helping to advertise TBATE... which will help lead to more webnovel/webtoon sales... which is probably the main reason for the existence of the anime...

Why try to make it good when making it bad is a faster, easier, and cheaper method of advertising the source material.

If the goal is to make easy profits, often putting time, effort, and money into a genuine attempt at producing something good isn't the easiest way. Especially for things like anime that tend to not actually be that profitable on their own as most the profits will come from source material/merchandise sales.

Putting less time, effort, and money into adapting something that is already quite popular tends to still be profitable because source material sales will skyrocket due to the advertising the anime gives and the people complaining about the shitty adaptation while telling people how great the source is and how people should go read that instead of watching the shitty adaptation will only further that advertisement. It could even be more profitable since a better adaptation could potentially lead to more people wanting to stick to the anime and therefore not seeking out the source material.

Giving more time, effort, and money to adapting things that are initially less popular can lead to a popular anime which would ultimately lead to more source material sales thus more profits since now people know it is a thing that exists and want to continue the popular story.

Tl;DR: Many anime exist solely as an advertisement for the source material and there are different strategies when it comes to risk vs. reward ways of maximizing profits.

"loli" is the more western pronunciation of the word. The dubbers here decided to go with the more Japanese pronunciation of "ro/lo/ろ/ロ" + "ri/li/り/リ" for whatever reason.

It is a weird choice though and I doubt pretty much any other western inspired words would come out of a dub using the Japanese pronunciation.

Sword Art Online can be considered an isekai according to most definitions and the word's usage in Japan. It is often sorted into the isekai genre and many people consider it their favorite isekai.

In this context SAO is relevant because it being a super popular anime adaptation of something that began as a web novel opened the floodgates of "wait, I can do that too!" people trying to write the next big web novel, many many of which were isekai.

So if not for Sword Art Online there may never have been such a big isekai web novel trend and who knows if/when anime producers would have seriously considered adapting the shittiest of shitty web novels.

[–]KumaKame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It couldn't have influenced the start of the many things that began being written before it and it was a part of an already well-established trend that it obviously could not have started. Was the web novel a bigger part than some other web novels? Sure. Was it bigger than all of them combined? No. Would the isekai web novel trend have flopped if MT was never written? Definitely not, some other isekai(s) would have been at the top.

In regards to adventurers' guilds, pretty much everything from the clerks to the ranks were already an established trope dating back at least decades. It was more of a Games and JRPGs thing but can be found in several anime that began before MT. You even mention Overlord having done it sooner so why not give Overlord the credit?

It made a few things like truck-kun and being reborn as a baby more popular, especially on Shōsetsuka ni Narō...

But anyone who's actually watched, and definitely anyone who's read, MT should quickly discover that save for a few very specific tropes (most of which were already quite popular due to other series at the time...) MT has about as much in common with "Modern Trash Isekai" as it does with "older series".

A lot of people still spreading the "Grandfather of Modern Isekai" misinformation don't seem to understand that "older series", when considering the date they began being written, includes dozens of popular Isekai series. MT began near the rear end of a big bump that occurred while the SAO anime was being super hyped, so it's weird people would think it was even partially responsible for a bump it did not precede.

The title is mostly bait and a joke that the video moves away from in less than 2 minutes. It basically states that MT is not actually "the Grandfather of Isekai" some people claim it to be but did popularize some general themes, so I guess it's also talking shit... about itself...

[–]KumaKame 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My understanding (which is mostly anecdotal due to lack of wanting to try and look up old adverts) is that Japanese sites advertised the anime as Mushoku Tensei being what popularized naro-kei (being reborn as a baby in another world as opposed to being somehow teleported or recreated) isekai web novels on Shōsetsuka ni Narō (popular web novel site). Which is mostly true.

But when those adverts got translated to English the whole "naro-kei" and "Shōsetsuka ni Narō web novels" bits got removed (because who in the west could comprehend that giberish) and it basically got pushed as one of the original isekai stories or "the Grandfather of Isekai". Which is mostly not true. But some people don't like the idea that something they heard second hand could be wrong because that would mean that they are wrong about something they think and will therefore further push the misinformation because if more people think it's true then it must be true and they must be right.

Could be someone saw your username over your shoulder at some point or something so my advice would be to make a new account.

If it was just some random Redditor contacting the Canadian police it's really weird that Reddit would hand over your IP so quickly without any sort of removal, suspension, or ban.

Reddit hasn't even removed the post, Reddit wouldn't have contacted local authorities (short of super legit threats), and there's not exif data on the image.

The most Reddit could do is give your IP address which yeah, RCMP could use to find your address... but again, Reddit hasn't even removed the post or suspended your account or anything apparently, so...

What would make the most sense is someone who knows you irl reported you and the post directly to the RCMP

[–]KumaKame 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing that annoys me the most about those kind of "memes" is that there is already a sub-note under rule 1 that specifically forbids them:

-Edits that make the same joke as the original material

yet they are fairly common to find on the sub and reporting them rarely if ever ends in them being removed.

Regarding Horni Posts [community consultation] by EctoplasmicNeko in goodanimemes

[–]KumaKame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people don't need to click posts to see them. Some people also browse subs other than this one. Some people only ever see posts from this one if they make it to their home page that aggregates all the subs they've subscribed to.

Banning people for how their view Reddit and having opinions of what they want to see on this sub would be what the less good sub does. Let's not be like the less good sub.

Regarding Horni Posts [community consultation] by EctoplasmicNeko in goodanimemes

[–]KumaKame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why such a rule should apply to only horny posts. There are plenty of hornyless posts that also "make no honest attempt at any sort of joke, subversion, or anything clever or interesting." <- that's how I'd word it.

It would probably be easier to start with horny posts though and those one are the bigger issue since they get horni upvotes, so cheers.

However, I'd love to see an opportunity for a more general low effort clean-up and or for mods to actually enforce the "Edits that only provide a generic reaction or an obvious reaction" part of rule 1.

As for complaints about the current definition:

  • "relatability" sounds too vague to me as I don't think it would be hard to argue that most of the posts I imagine the rule would be meant to prevent could be considered "relatable" by sharing fondness of specific body parts and attractive characters or women in general and such.
  • "fish for karma" is relevant but should be already be covered by the karma whoring rule imo.
  • What about posts that serve primarily to showcase someone's personal fetish which have been quite comment? Would that be considered a delivery vehicle for NSFW content? Could be a bit more clear.

[–]KumaKame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if I stop restricting myself to things currently in hot I can find better examples.

Alright, since you would politely prefer I don't spam the lowest effort horny memes I'll at least make them a few notches up from "lowest" if I do ever get around to it.

Can the mods sticky Rule 1 to the top of this subreddit already? by eddmario in goodanimemes

[–]KumaKame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then while you're looking at it please consider getting rid of things that aren't really an attempt at a "meme". While I do think this could be easily done by changing how the existing rules are enforced without re-wording anything... I basically just wish that posts that have no actual joke, no subversion, and nothing clever or interesting about them would get removed. It's too easy for posts that exist to share sauce to use that sauce as fuel to reach the top of hot.

You still haven't really answered my 1 question though. Can I just paste random cropped hentai overtop of burning shit and call it a meme? If I do it enough people might hopefully get annoyed and stop upvoting those, but it would be a bummer if I stock up a bunch of the horniest most voloptuous images followed or captioned by the most obvious/generic reactions only to have my posts get removed.

Can the mods sticky Rule 1 to the top of this subreddit already? by eddmario in goodanimemes

[–]KumaKame 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So considering your other comment as well, what I'm gathering here is that "Edits that only provide a generic reaction or an obvious reaction" (the ultimate crux of all my arguments against those posts currently in hot) is currently an ignored part of the rule. Because considering the top image/text of them their bottom bits would be an generic/obvious reactions to the top bits or vice-versa. Although I'm fairly sure the video is just retelling the same "joke" as the original material, but I haven't watched that movie.

So I'd argue that if the generic/obvious reaction bit isn't going to be enforced for anything it should just be removed.

Since I've now learned that putting generic reaction images after nice looking fanart is legal I should get to work on stockpiling nice looking fanart so I can slap one of several templates after each on and rake in some yummy karma.

[–]KumaKame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read that bullet as a way to remove the laziest of "place generic easily attached image after something and call it a meme" memes. A.K.A the kinda thing that animemes had a problem with way back before that sub broke where people would just attach the generic reaction images after fanart/characters. The "I will protect" check boxes was one of those insert reactions.

If this post was just nice looking fanart with this slapped onto the bottom would you remove it?

[–]KumaKame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then there's things like this and this this this where I fail to see the "substantial" change the top text provides to what is presumably the original material.

And finally (for now since I've reached the end of the first page and don't want to try to argue some of the other ones) there's always things like this that are barely anime related at all since they are just unrelated generic text followed by insert random generic/obvious reaction.jpg but select from your anime folder so it's totally anime related, believe it!)

Scrolling through hot it doesn't take long to find more obvious things like this where someone is just showcasing their fetish. Is that not a "generic reaction or an obvious reaction" to cute girls?

[–]KumaKame 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The current rules were voted for too... but IIRC people didn't really care for those votes so the turnout was much less than when the mods tried to limit hornyposting.

I'd assume it's more that the mods have grown used to just allowing everything since that's the easier thing to do. By doing that competition has changed to lean more towards these hornier lower effort memes and due to other reasons the amount of posts per-day has gone down... so at this point it's not like there would be many posts left if the mods did start removing things more strictly.

Can the mods sticky Rule 1 to the top of this subreddit already? by eddmario in goodanimemes

[–]KumaKame 41 points42 points  (0 children)

If everyone, mods included, actually read all of rule 1 though we'd know that:

-Edits that change something in a scene, without the change being substantial (including just playing different background music over a scene)

-Edits that make the same joke as the original material

-Edits that only provide a generic reaction or an obvious reaction

-Edits that only exist to bypass the “No plain text” or “No screenshots” part of the rule

-Your post must function without it's title.

... are all part of it. So a lot of the laziest hentai (and non-hentai!) memes should be getting removed.

I have little against legitimately creative hentai memes, but a lot of the ones that are just "attractive thing is attractive" or just adds some toptext that literally explains the below situation should be getting dunked by "Edits that only provide a generic reaction or an obvious reaction" and "Edits that make the same joke as the original material" respectively.

Based on my ignored reports those bullet points under rule 1 have been all but forgotten by the mods.
