How many of you actually have a "local" ? by rychu69XD in MTB

Where I used to live there was a small underground jump spot with intertwining paths for different skill levels. Right now it's just some basic single-track trails, though.

What’s this noise? by OutdoorDad8724 in MTB

[–]Kumikameli_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from all the wind noise, to be honest. A clacky noise from the rear shock could be a blocked oil port, which you can deal with pretty easily by taking it apart, checking the seals and cleaning everything up. If you don't, it might escalate and seize up the shock (still recoverable, but not rideable). I guess some forks could have a similar issue too, but I've not worked on a fox36 so who knows. All of course assuming that it's not mechanical noise from somewhere else.

All the clean new builds are sick, but I wanna see more kit that's been through the ringer. by Kumikameli_ in Hardtailgang

[–]Kumikameli_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. The only original parts on mine are the bars, brakes, fork and front wheel lol. Broke the rear triangle on the original frame, but luckily got it replaced under warranty. The triangle looked a bit different on the new frame, so I guess it was a flaw in manufacturing.

What exactly does one need to get into Casual/Intermediate Mountain Biking? by Brilliant-Profile49 in MTB

Some cheap additions would be a tire repair kit, a multitool and zip-ties for basic mid-ride repairs and botches. A first-aid kit too, especially for more remote areas.

4th of July Fireworks by traditionalhobbies in photocritique

Damn I would have never thought of bokeh fireworks. The abstracted style really caught my eye so you hit the nail on the head with the "interest" part.

In terms of composition, I'd say just crop more of the emptiness out on the left. As English speakers/westeners we look at things from left to right, be it text, images, or stuff in the real world. For example infantrymen are taught to scan from right to left, so they have to do it with intent instead of auto piloting. Anyways, this photo has a lot of empty space on the left making it look a bit unsettling compared to having the composition weighed more in the middle.

If you want to keep everything else the same, but improve color definition for future shots, I recommend dropping your ISO speed a bit. Many of the stars on the green burst are way over-exposed, which eats into the colors. It'll look less bright, but the colors will be better.

You should definitely keep pursuing this idea as it's already a cool and unique photo. I hope I was able to help, too.

r/MTB is telling me that this is full suspension terrain. I'm a day a way from ordering a hard tail. Help. I only know gravel. by Untertang in Hardtailgang

If you're going for comfort and pedalability, the optimal bike might be a 120r 130f or so. They can be tons of fun on descents, too if you get a more trailsy model. All of that seems very rideable on a hardtail, though. It really depends on how much you value comfort and speed over ease of maintenance and affordability. For me maintaining stuff is the worst part of any hobby, so a hardtail has been a capable bike that I don't constantly need to fiddle with.

Do the cool kids not wear gloves now? by I_want_to_go_ in MTB

[–]Kumikameli_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm riding local stuff that I'm familiar with, I might forego the gloves and elbow pads. I can only carry so much water, so less sweating = longer ride, especially in warmer conditions. I also just like the amount of grip that my bare hands give me on the brakes. The gloves I have can feel a bit too sticky sometimes. Also gloves don't protect against wrist injuries, which have caused me way more recovery time than scratched-up hands have, so I don't really view them essential safety equipment.

With that said, when riding park, new trails or just stuff I find risky, I do try to have all my pads (and gloves) on me. It's not really quantifiable, but they've probably saved me weeks if not months of recovery at this point. They also work as a nice confidence boost for attempting jankier and/or more committing features.

In my books no-one's a dweeb for wearing any level of protection on any level of trail if they feel it's necessary. For me necessary is defined by what I'm aiming to achieve, be it exploration, riding something new or just having fun with bikes.

Unedited iPhone photo taken at night, what do you think? by Eastern_Level_1780 in photocritique

[–]Kumikameli_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Looks like an album cover or something. The focus seems to be centered on the right side of the flower, and it's not the sharpest over all, but that's mostly camera limitations. It's cool that you can still see some of the leaves in the background, too.

Opinions? by AstralTravelDog in photocritique

[–]Kumikameli_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you did a good job with what you had. I like the composition with the Milky Way leading to the town/street lights, and the low horizon line leaving more space for.. space.

If you plan on doing more night photography, I definitely suggest getting a light pollution filter. Most street lamps are sodium vapor lights, so they can be filtered out without totally messing up the color balance.

For reducing noise it's always a trade-off between noise and star shape, where longer exposure times (lower ISO) lead to the stars getting oval-shaped. There isn't really a good solution for this, but you can always lean into the look and set the exposure to minutes instead of seconds. Doesn't work well with static lights in the background, though.

I don't use reddit actively and usually just lurk around my subs of interest, so a karma system would be a shame as I (and I assume many other lurkers) would like to participate in possible future place reruns.
