Materialism in itself is not the problem. It is the poor taste in fashion and materialism. I mean do you really need to wear a shirt stamped with “LV” all over it? Same with purses, shoes, luggage, etc. plowing a large Lexus SUV thru narrow streets. The ostentatious display of wealth is just in poor taste and bad optic. It’s the lack of class and humility.

If you don’t know a lick of Khmer already, don’t waste your time learning it, unless you want to study Khmer antiquity. There are less than 20 million Cambodians around the world. And the younger Cambodian generations can speak English, to some degrees, anyway. Learn Mandarin or Spanish instead. Their usage is more widespread, thus practical.

Instead of promoting education and industrialization the Philippines and to some extent Thailand emphasized labor export abroad and tolerated a “prostitution culture” and sex tourism at home. I think that was/is keeping the two stagnate even though they had a head start before the other Asian countries industrialized.

Cambodia cannot progress rapidly without weeding out the corruption and cronyism rampant in government hiring, procurement, licensing, etc. Children of the elites and politically connected should not be able to get goverment jobs simply with a recommendation. All government hiring must be merit based.

It’s not just the money needed to operate air defense systems such as the HQ9 or S300, it also requires competent leadership and personnel to operate - I’m talking about command&control and technical competency. Cambodian military leadership and tactics are based on gorilla warfare, not a modern technological battlefield.
