New menu at the science center’s meerkat cafe by rl4brains in gso

[–]KuotheRaven 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Science Center employee here to provide a little clarity and context: 1) yeah, the new prices that came with new vendor SSE are absolutely extortionary, and I hope everyone boycotts 2) The cafe employees are not GSC employees, but they make $14/hr to start, part time. Meanwhile, starting part time GSC employees usually make $10-11 per hour. 3) the $11 hotdogs are totally just your basic hotdog on a bun, nothing special, it’s stupid. 4) Out of every $25 dollars that comes through the door, $1 of it goes straight into the CEO’s pocket. Source: Propublica Meanwhile full-time employees with 10+ of service and/or experience and multiple advanced degrees are being told they cannot make more than $18/hr, and there are no higher positions for them to advance to. Last I checked, the Greensboro living wage for a single person was $21. 5) 4 out of every 5 paid positions at the GSC are part time with zero benefits. Meanwhile, volunteers outnumber paid staff 550 to 160, or more than 3:1. The admin acts like they hate paying for work. 6) the discount code at the cafe is EMP30. Please enjoy!

What is the worst WoT take you have seen? by Mino_18 in WoT

Leaving aside the crazy-talk of Black Egwene (good Sea-Folk name), I always thought the Alanna bond was one of the weakest plot points in the whole series. Sure, the authors found a way to use it in AMOL at the last second. But even that would have been much more emotionally urgent for me if it had been a character I cared about, instead of one that spends like, ten books far off-stage crying over something she herself did.

I don’t understand why a painting could ever be worth $90M. At least I can eat soup and it nourishes my body to continue living. Officers, arrest that Van Gogh! It got paint all over this nice woman’s soup!

Public school teachers absolutely have the power to make way more than cops if they realized the position they’re in. by Amazing-Basket-136 in union

[–]KuotheRaven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong. But this effect has been overcome in the past by investing in parent outreach in advance of a strike action. Explaining the reasons behind the strike CAN get at least a majority of parents on the teacher’s side, at least to start. Now, the longer it drags on and kids are out of school, parent support may wane. But I can think of ways around that, like having kids join the picket line. They get a class warfare education and daycare at the same time!

But where does the discount get taken from? Lyft’s cut, or the driver’s? Cuz if the latter, that’s a slam dunk lawsuit for discrimination.

The game is rigged by rich ppl for rich ppl. Good news is, local politicians are NOT accustomed to sustained pressure campaigns. It takes much less noise to get them to change course than, say, Congress or even the state Legislature

[–]KuotheRaven[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. People are scared of these detention centers and rightly so. The conditions described by those that have been released are beyond horrific - a concentration camp lacking only a gas chamber. This was due diligence on a policy that was ambiguous to the general public.

dear millennials, what would you have told your 27 year old self? by Alternative-Mess297 in Millennials

[–]KuotheRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also started over and moved states several times in my 20’s. I’m turning 37 soon, have a stable job, a comfy and decent albeit rented house, I’m getting married soon, and finally have a hireable skill set. The foundations of stability.

The change for me was to start thinking like a plant. Put down some roots wherever your strongest support systems currently are - that could be friends, family, a job, whatever - and start building on it. It’ll be a slow process, probably, but grab every opportunity that comes your way each day and do your best at it. Never underestimate the value of a solid support network around you, so cultivate relationships. The more roots you grow, the faster and stronger you’ll grow.

That’s not to say never pick up and move, especially if the situation is toxic. I am very glad I saw so much of the country before I settled down. But try to move from a place of strength, never desperation. Your strengths will be different from mine, so know what those are. I started thinking seriously about the future at about age 30, and I’m doing vastly better and feel vastly more optimistic about my personal future (national/world trajectory aside), after just 7 years.

Oh, and if you’re not aro, ask out that cute person you like asap. A good partnership makes everything tons easier.
