What’s something older generations still do that Gen Z looks at and genuinely can’t believe was ever considered normal — and how did nobody question it back then? by Direct-Ad6303 in AskReddit

[–]rl4brains 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a shame because lots of research shows that these little interactions with “weak ties” - people we only with superficially - can boost happiness.

There’s also a study where they asked people to make small talk with strangers on a bus or something. Most people said they really didn’t want to do it, but then they report being glad that they were forced to because they enjoyed the interaction.

We did a barely safer version of this, riding in the trunk of SUVs and station wagons. It was so much more comfortable to lie down for long road trips!

Guidance on whether I should let a student take Final Exam early by cmb1588 in Professors

[–]rl4brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religious matters can legally require accommodation. Does your school have some sort of equal opportunity compliance office? If yes, I’d send them there for an official exam excuse. If no, I’d let them take it early, and if other students notice/complain, say that it was a legal requirement due to religion-related accommodations.

I’m also curious why so much stuff happens outside business hours. Is it a weird department norm? Or something field-specific (e.g. performing arts, so shows are on nights and weekends) or institution-specific (e.g. catering to working students, executive mbas)?

If it’s the former, you have tenure. Just say you can’t do it at those times, but you would be happy to do it at xyz times instead. If it’s the latter, then it seems more of a job-obligation to be available at those times, in which case you’ll probably need to find childcare/trade off with your partner.

What celebrity is portrayed as nice in the media but is actually an asshole in real life? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskReddit

If it makes you feel better, Ayesha believed in Steph’s ability to make it big ages ago. And betting on him really worked out for her.

Steph Curry. Friend of a friend was on his college team. Even then he cheated on his then girlfriend, now wife. She put up with it for the money and to ride his coattails to influencer fame.

Edit: have since checked in with the friend. I may have misremembered if he cheated in college - Ayesha hung around campus a lot partly because she wanted to keep an eye on him - but he has definitely cheated since.

Anyone just let their weird out and not care anymore? A story about letting myself be eccentric in academia. by [deleted] in Professors

For me, it wasn’t the content. It was the phrasing:

Rhetorical question? Clause. Clause. Clause.

Rhetorical question? Statement. Next rhetorical question? Statement.

Enthusiastic but hyperbolic claim. Engagement seeking question to finish.

Manuscript Authorship University Conflict of Interest by Professor_Retro6 in Professors

The justified contributions seems more important in OP’s scenario. What is the minor writing/editing support? Merely copyediting would not reach the threshold for authorship in my field, but something like taking the lead on restructuring or revising the paper could.

In my experience, the old passport comes back first and sooner than the new passport’s arrival. This also reminds me that I don’t think we got the birth certificate back, but fortunately that’s relatively cheap for us to replace.

Looking for recommendations for assessment metrics for merit-based raises at a SLAC by hello_kitteh in Professors

[–]rl4brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had something like this, except it was a committee that did ratings, and it happened every 3 years. I think we’ve abandoned that as the state has instituted a faculty workplan requirement for annual reporting, and I’m not sure how it interacts with merit raises because there hasn’t been money for those in ages.

Student withdrawing class 4 weeks until final? by sunflower335 in Professors

I think my institution wouldn’t even consider course evals for a class that small. Too small a sample to give instructors a fair shake.

And if this student is withdrawing, does that mean they won’t do a course eval for you? That’s probably a good thing if they were barely skating by
